So don't take offence Australia, this is directed at the FFA but catering to the lowest common denominator. That Kenny Lowe and his anti-Nix comments! :) Ha, typo.

Futsal popularity soars in NZ By Ashlee Tulloch Sunday 8 Nov 2015 6:45 p.m. There's a saying in Brazil that a great footballer is born there every day. But before they're footballers, they're futsal players. More than 30 million people play futsal worldwide, and it's one of the fastest growing sports in New Zealand. Futsal takes over the basketball courts at Auckland's ASB Stadium, and it's becoming a common sight up and down the country. "In 2011, there was 5000 people that were involved in futsal in all aspects – so that's in leagues, having a go, schools – and now that's gone crazy and we've got over 55,000," says New Zealand Football's futsal development officer Marvin Ekins. Futsal was invented in Uruguay in the 1930s as a rainy-day training option. The beauty of the game is it can literally be played anywhere with five players a side and rolling subs. The key difference between a traditional football and the futsal ball is that it's not only smaller but also made of foam, so it bounces 30 percent less. And there's no shortage of famous faces who honed their skills on futsal courts before becoming professional footballers. You don't have to go far to dig into Christiano Ronaldo. He quotes that he used to play futsal and it helped him as a player. Messi has also played futsal and Ronaldinho - for those that can remember him - is a really exciting player who has a huge futsal background. Mr Ekins says the appeal for Kiwi kids is only going to become greater. "The opportunity to represent your country is a lot easier in futsal at the moment, rather than being an All White, so with all the professional league popping up around the world we're really going to start to see some guys going overseas," says Mr Ekins. The Futsal Whites' first big step will be trying to qualify for next year's FIFA Futsal World Cup in Fiji in February. 3 News Read more: http://www.3news.co.nz/sport/futsal-popularity-soars-in-nz-2015110817#ixzz3qtlnzZGh

All Whites attacker Tyler Boyd makes successful debut in Portugal top flight IAN ANDERSON Last updated 09:50 19/01/2016 Tyler Boyd's debut in the top flight of Portugese football proved to be a successful one for his club. The attacking All Whites midfielder played the first 63 minutes of a 1-0 upset win for his side Vitoria Guimaraes over heavyweights FC Porto in the Primeira Liga on Monday (NZ time). Boyd had made a number of appearances for the club's reserve side after joining the club from the Wellington Phoenix early last year before getting his first start at home against third-placed Porto. The 21-year-old was booked in the 60th minute and substituted three minutes later as his side held on to their lead, grabbed in the fourth minute when a mistake by Porto's legendary Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas allowed Bakary Sare to score. The win moved Vitoria Guimaraes up to sixth spot on the ladder in the 18-team league. http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/sport/football/76020528/All-Whites-attacker-Tyler-Boyd-makes-successful-debut-in-Portugal-top-flight

"But we're not there yet, we've got to keep those talks going. "We've said for some time that we're looking for a greater contribution from the Wellington Phoenix and from the other stakeholders in New Zealand.

Yes There's some confusion about Lowry, he announced a two year extension on Instagram but the team hasn't confirmed it - they also said just prior to the announcement that they weren't signing any new players until the new coach was in place.

Good timing for the "big game" hopefully at least aha Right now home with a fire sounds better than Adelaide Oval in the cold!

Waiting for RyanM to try and spin a positive on this result ;) It's pre season. The WSW ffa cup game is going to be tough with that lineup though.

Waiting for RyanM to try and spin a positive on this result ;) Here is the match report: Marco Rossi sees red as Wellington Phoenix draw first pre-season against Western Suburbs Good without the ball, not so good with it. That was the assessment of Wellington Phoenix coach Darije Kalezic after his side limped through a 0-0 draw against Central League leaders Western Suburbs at Jerry Collins Stadium in Porirua on Tuesday night. "To be honest this kind of game normally we have to win easy, but because of all of the things that happens in this moment in the team, the injuries, the small squad, the players who come late from the holidays, all of that stuff has an influence on the result," Kalezic said, "We've trained a lot on organisation and tonight that was the priority for me to see and I saw that, so we can be satisfied with that." The Phoenix started the match without regular starters frontline players Andrew Durante and Gui Finkler due to injury, but they did have seven players you would normally expect to start for them when the regular season rolls around in Marco Rossi, Michael McGlinchey, Tom Doyle, Lewis Italiano, Roy Krishna and new signings Scott Galloway and Goran Paracki. Paracki overcame a couple of poor early touches to look assured in his holding midfield roll, while Galloway looked at ease at right back. The first half saw Wests have the most possession, but the Phoenix the most chances. The best of those fell to Sarpreet Singh after 30 minutes, but he blazed his shot over the bar from 15 yards out. Five minutes before halftime Rossi was sent off for a stamp on a Wests attacker laying prone on the ground. Some pre-season matches would see another player allowed on for the Phoenix, but that didn't happen in this one. Kalezic agreed with referee Robert Fleetham's decision to send Rossi off and when discussing it after the match he had an interesting take on why it happened. "It was a red card. Marco is a player who got three months off [since last season] and you see what the result is. Some players get four days off, some get three months off. "If you come from the three months holiday to play a game after one week that's the result you get. We as a club have to change that, the culture to get different holiday times for the players. This is only one of the many things we can improve and develop in the organisation." The second half saw Wests swap their entire team for their second team, which was understandable given they have a Central League match on Sunday which they can secure the title with if they win. Still, their seconds dominated against 10 men without ever really threatening the goal. The Phoenix had a couple of chances late on but couldn't find a decent finish. Their lack of players at the moment was shown when their under-20 centre back Liam Wood came on at left midfield late in the second half. Neither Durante or Finkler will be available next Tuesday for their away FFA Cup clash against Western Sydney Wanderers. Ahead of that match, Kalezic said the would need to work on keeping possession. "If we want to get a result there we have to keep the ball longer, we have to be smarter, we have to make better choices on the ball and that's where we have to put the attention." AT A GLANCE Western Suburbs 0 Wellington Phoenix 0
