Nor is it just a bandaid.

True because it seems it creates more problems then it will solve (if we are talking about the creation of teams from scratch). A bandaid normally helps stop the bleeding.

Would think it is a negative for Perth Glory if the Force get cut from the Super Rugby competition.

The work done so far is only Stage 1 of the redevelopment.  Stage 2 if and when it goes ahead will take capacity to 25,000.

Will go ahead when they can sell it out for a good year or 2...

IMO Perth and Adelaide will be team 17 and 18 in the NRL If they had any balls and vision

Wasn't sure where to post this, didn't warrant a thread - but take a look at the co-owners for the new MLS expansion side LA FC, it is incredible how many cashed up co-owners they have. From Vincent Tan, who football fans would know as the owner of Cardiff City, to guys like Will Ferrell, Tony Robbins, Magic Johnson, YouTube co founder Chad Hurley, the list goes on.

Super Rugby debacle proof Australian sport is stretched beyond breaking point

The imminent demise of one Australian Super Rugby team is both a warning sign for Australian sport and a lesson from history that has not been learned.

It's the story of sporting competitions expanding beyond their means.

The beginning of the Super 12 Rugby competition in 1996 was a fantastic innovation — a new competition comprising the best 12 teams from the best three countries, playing each other on a weekly basis was just what the sport needed as rugby embraced its new fully professional status.

The three Australian teams, the New South Wales Waratahs, the Queensland Reds and the ACT Brumbies, represented the heartland of Australian rugby.

But then Super 12 became 14 with the addition of Perth's Western Force and South Africa's Cheetahs in 2006, before it expanded to 15 when the Melbourne Rebels entered the competition in 2011 and finally 18 as it stands for this season at least.

At 18 teams Super Rugby is bloated and incomprehensible and only the most diehard fan can explain how four conferences and five separate points tables work, and how Japan and Argentina were part of South Africa.

Bringing the competition back to 15 teams and cutting one of the Australian franchises - either the Force or Rebels who are based in staunch AFL states - may hurt, but it makes sense.

Hindsight says it was inevitable, but the cost now will be messy legal battles, the end of careers and broken dreams.

This is a story that has been repeated time and again in Australia.

Mistakes repeated across codes

Take rugby league. In 1995, and with the Super League war brewing in the background, the Australian Rugby League welcomed four new teams into a ridiculously expanded 20-team competition.

Gone from those 20 teams were the Seagulls (from that notorious Australian sporting graveyard, the Gold Coast), North Sydney, Brisbane's South Queensland Crushers (remember them?) and Perth's Western Reds.

St George and Illawarra have since merged as have Balmain and Western Suburbs to form the Wests Tigers.

There was even a short-lived team in Adelaide, the Rams, which lasted one season in the NRL following the demise of Super League.

And what of the National Basketball League?

Here is a list of just some of the teams that have come and gone since 1979 — the Canberra Cannons, Sydney Supersonics, West Sydney, St Kilda, North Melbourne, South East Melbourne, Nunawading, Victoria Titans, Frankston, Geelong, Glenelg, Gold Coast (Rollers and Blaze), Hobart, Launceston, Devonport, Newcastle Falcons, Hunter Pirates, West Adelaide, Souths Dragons, Townsville and the Singapore Slingers.

Even the A-League has lost three teams in its short 12-year history; the New Zealand Knights, Gold Coast United and the North Queensland Fury.

The calls for an expansion of the current 10-team competition are loud, but with most of the teams privately owned and running at a loss, there is no way any of those owners would want an even smaller share of the pie.

Equally strong is the call for a second-tier competition, but who pays?

It's a story related time and again in Australian sport. Even the AFL has had its growing pains.

Fitzroy's marriage with Brisbane was a merger in name only.

And while the addition of Greater Western Sydney and the Gold Coast Suns has added an extra game per week, and so more broadcasting revenue, the ongoing cost will be the tens, if not hundreds-of-millions of dollars needed to prop up the ailing Suns and any other team that falls on hard times.

For that reason, it is hard to see a Tasmanian team admitted to the AFL any time soon.

Australia's population not big enough for so much sport

Australians are proud of their sporting culture, but with a population of 24 million, we are spread thin.

At this time of year we are supporting the AFL, the NRL, Super Rugby, A-League, and the Super Netball — that is 56 professional sporting teams competing for sponsorship and broadcasting deals.

Then there are the second tiers, all running on a semi-professional basis, needing ongoing funding for players, coaches, physios, accommodation and travel.

In summer, cricket is competing with soccer and basketball — all of which have men's and women's competitions. Throw in athletics, tennis and cycling and the scene is as busy as winter.

Compare Australia with the United States. There, you have three main sporting competitions, the NFL, basketball and baseball spread evenly throughout the year.

Ice hockey is a close fourth. Even so, those four major sports are consumed by a population of 325 million people.

Yet here we are with one-thirteenth of the population of the US and arguably more sport. The sheer number of professional clubs in Australia is one of the major issues in Australian sport.

The Titans are rugby league's most recent attempt to base a team on the Gold Coast.
Photo The Titans are rugby league's most recent attempt to base a team on the Gold Coast.

AAP: Dave Hunt, File
Our population simply is not big enough to sustain the number of teams we currently have, let alone expansion.

As sport becomes more professional, teams and competitions need more money.

They need sponsors, they need broadcasters, they need bums on seats, but there's simply not enough of any of those to go around.

While some sports are like the AFL and NRL are thriving, others — particularly rugby and basketball — are struggling.

The mantra of business is that you must grow. But there is a limit. A rubber band that is stretched too thin will most surely snap.

Meh

We can have more professional teams.

It's just the mindset that everything has to be fair and even but at the same time elite.

Players are getting paid too much money.

There's your comparison with the country "13 times" bigger than us. Their player salaries in all professional sports are between 1-2 times the size of an aleague squad.

Australia can't fit rugby because it's a sport played by half of one social class in 2.5 states and it's over reached in to states that give even less of a shit about it.

We've got some pretty good groundsmen. Our pitch is never as bad as what Sydney/Brisbane dish up, even though we have the Storm and the Rebels smashing it up.

actually it was pretty bad 12 months ago. didn't the grass have some disease or something? the rebels were chopping it up something shocking.

This thread is for general discussion on the expansion or potential expansion of teams in the A-league. It is also used to discuss the viability of existing clubs and the history of previous clubs as well as NPL teams. The FFA has expansion on hold until after the existing broadcasting deal ends, unless a miracalous bid comes along.

The Front Runners

Canberra

Canberra is a front runner for future A-league expansion. The official bid A-League4Canberra was closed on 10 May 2012 due to losing out to Western Sydney Wanderers and FFA suspending expansion until 2015. Canberra drew 5,193 people to an A-league game between Central Coast Mariners and Perth Glory on the 4th of September 2009, and 5,735 to watch Sydney FC vs Central Coast during the 2007 pre season cup. Canberra has a W-League team which has the highest average attendance of the league at about 1000. According to Ivan Slavich, Canberra is the preferred option for the A-leagues 11th team.

Canberra has had 2 NSL teams in the past, Canberra City and Canberra Cosmos, the Cosmos failed to attract crowds above 3000.

The Wollongong A-league bid, South Coast FC, lost out too NQF and GCU. Football South Coast chief executive Ann-Marie Balliana has spoken about the cities goals to have an A-league team. Football South Coast boss Eddy De Gabriele said the South Coast is hoping to have a W-league and NYL team by the 2014-15 NSWPL season, and an A-league team in 3 years with several backers already being approached. South Coast Wolves were expected to have a 22-hectare training and administration site built for the club by 2015 as well as a cheaper stadium rent deal to play at WIN Stadium, however the initial funding was scrapped.

Wollongong drew a crowd of 6,124 at a match between Sydney FC and Wellington Phoenix for the 2008 Pre-season cup, and 6,540 at a pre-season friendly in 2013 between Sydney FC and Newcastle Jets. Newcastle Jets player Ruben Zadkovich and Newcastle Coach Gary van Egmond both publicly supported an A-league bid. Wollongong supported a NSL club for over 20 years in the NSL, its crowd were generally between 3-5k.

Tasmania has had a A-league bid since 2008. Tasmania has 2 main population centers, Hobart and Launceston, it is unclear what city the team would play in if successful. Football Federation Tasmania is not currently pursuing an A-league license, stating that it is unsustainable, they're currently hoping to have a small rectangular stadium be built in Hobart. In 2013 when speaking about expansion, A-league chief Damien de Bohun said Hobart was another option for expansion, however in 2014 David Gallop commented that Tasmania was not in the FFA's short term plan however did not rule it out for the future.

Melbourne Victory signed a 3 year agreement with the Tasmanian football association to play pre-season games in Tasmania and also naming of the Tasmanian state league. http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/9906/img0639df.jpg

notes:
- auckland home similar to auckland city, and away similar to waitekere
- wollongong kits, most similar to what they have worn in the past. could replace away with a grey kit
- geelong to wear white shorts and socks or blue shorts and socks with the home kit, whichever is most suitable against their opponent
- if too many greens, canberra could wear blue/white/yellow as their home kit instead.

Partnership to help Ipswich NPL club taste success

Western Pride general manager Pat Boyle with new club sponsor Ipswich Coffee Club franchisee Boubacar Barry.

AS Western Pride officials pursue future A-League goals, the club has received a major sponsorship boost.

In what general manager Pat Boyle describes as a perfect fit, Coffee Club has joined forces with Ipswich's National Premier Leagues Club, helping the boys' teams and school program.

"It's a nationally recognised business,'' Boyle said welcoming Coffee Club regional franchisee Boubacar Barry to Pride's growing network.

"With our aspirations for the NPL and beyond, to have a business of Barry's capabilities and credibility is absolutely superb for Western Pride.''

The new sponsorship arrangement will support Pride boys' teams playing in competitions from under-12 to youth.

The added investment will also assist Pride in its schools program.

Boyle said Coffee Club's involvement will bolster Pride's community involvement.

"I'm a firm believer in you can't just take and not give,'' Boyle said. "We must be supporting our band of supporters.''

Pride's focus includes working with schools like West Moreton Anglican College, Ipswich Grammar, Ipswich Girls' Grammar, at Augustine Heights and East Ipswich.

Pride also has an ongoing education program with Boonah State High.

Boyle said Coffee Club's "long-term deal'' would help Pride purchase equipment and maintain quality coaching.

Western Pride teams regularly play at the Briggs Road Sporting Complex, representing the region in the state NPL competition.

A 180 page fantasy thread.

Two teams will be added in 2018-19, and those two teams will come from any of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

And that will be pretty much it for the six year period of the new broadcast deal.

Canberra FC coach Marko Vrkic says all clubs must get behind A-League expansion bid

Canberra FC coach Marko Vrkic has thrown his support behind the capital's A-League expansion bid.

Canberra FC coach Marko Vrkic has thrown his full support behind the capital's A-League expansion bid and said every club in the region should do the same.

ACT Business analyst Jeff Williamson is leading the bid and Vrkic believes there are already players in the Capital Football NPL who could make it in Australia's top flight.

"Everyone in Canberra should support it because football in Canberra must have an A-League team, there's no question," Vrkic said.

"Every club should support this team, it would be great news for the area, the sooner we have an A-League team the better, it will lift football in Canberra considerably."

Vrkic said a professional team in Canberra would do wonders for the competition and create a much needed spotlight needed for talented players to be recognised.

"They just need someone to see them because Canberra is a small place but there are plenty of talented boys who just need the opportunity to play at a high level, it should have been like the this a long time ago," Vrkic said.

"The players need time but I think boys from Canberra can definitely make it with the right support and pathways.

"Canberra has plenty of talent and spirit in the league, it's just about local boys getting their opportunity and getting a window it's as simple as that."

While table-toppers Canberra FC would likely lose their best players to a Canberra A-League expansion side, Vrkic said that possibility was fine by him.

"I want to see my players playing a the highest level, that's the target, it's just my job to get my boys ready for that next level and to show I believe in them," Vrkic said.

"Canberra would be proud of to have local boys from playing in an A-League team they can call their own, I'm confident Canberrans would come out and support the team in numbers."

Canberra FC are undefeated after three games this season and host Woden Weston at Deakin Stadium on Sunday with Vrkic expecting a tough clash.

"There are no easy games in this competition but we'll be looking for another three points and to continue how we've finished the last three games," Vrkic said.

"We've have to be careful because every game is different and never easy but I'm confident we can go 4/4."

No they wont.

If it doesn't happen, the increase in the TV deal doesn't happen ($5 mill per annum).

But I haven't seen anything to suggest that the FFA will not increase by two teams in 2018-19.

Why do people think it won't happen?

It's only two teams, hardly an earth shattering change.

Because creating 2 new franchise teams will cost in excess of 5 mill in the aforemention areas with zero support as it stands. 10 team 4 lyf

That's nothing compared to the reams of fantasy around town that AFL will survive the 21st century, let alone north of the Murray.

Why do people think it won't happen?

"The FFA's analysis found that expanding the A-League by two teams under the current model would result in net losses over the next six years

"This is because grant distributions to the new clubs, and the increase in costs to FFA for operational matters such as transport would be greater than the additional revenue the clubs would generate through broadcast arrangements and sponsorships. As the FFA is a not-for-profit organisation that redistributes all of its income into the clubs and other parts of the game, such losses are not sustainable.

I saw that story as merely hosing down expectation that the league would expand for next season.

I'm pretty confident two teams will come in for 2018-19 as per the broadcast deal.

“We want to expand the leagues but this has to happen as part of a new structure.  That’s why we are now working with the clubs to determine the future structure of the leagues and the criteria for expansion. -

.
Mr Gallop said FFA would provide updates on the process over the months ahead.  While it was too soon to predict when expansion might occur, it would not happen before the 2018-19 season. -

I'd say there's plenty of good reason to be skeptical

Left to their own devices the FFA will never expand the HAL but with Fox pushing hard for it and the owners supporting it you've got to brlieve it will happen in 2018.

The missing link is a credible Brisbane proposal to match the southern Sydney one, once that's out and running I'd expect the ffa to start moving on this and appoint the next two clubs without any criteria ever being published.

Fox pushing Hard ?.............. FFA says their offer would lose money

Owners supporting it ?..........Got a source for that ?
