Analysis of Brisbane sporting market reveals how fierce competition is between the Broncos, Reds, Roar and Lions

Chris McMahon QB Monthly
The Courier-Mail
May 30, 2014 12:00AM

THE year was 1993. The scene was a record-breaking grand final crowd at the Sydney Football Stadium, and the Brisbane Broncos were about to claim their second premiership in succession against the St George Dragons.

As the familiar bass track to her rock anthem Simply the Best reverberated throughout the 42,239-strong crowd and the saxophone solo played out, Tina Turner made a prediction that would ultimately spell out the Broncos’ mantra for the next two decades.

Not only has on-field success been a hallmark during that period, but off-field consistency, according to managing director of Major League Marketing Jason Greenhalgh, has played a major part in the club’s success.

“The Broncos, along with Collingwood, are the two most marketable clubs in Australian sport,” says Greenhalgh, who has been in sports marketing for 20-plus years and previously worked with the likes of the Broncos, Queensland Reds and other major franchises.

“If you go to Subway you want to know the sandwich you are getting is the same you got last week, otherwise it all goes to crap. I think the Broncos have got that recipe for consistency and that is the main reason they are number one.”

The Broncos have had just four CEOs and three coaches in 25 years. Current CEO Paul White says the key is to always be looking to the future.

“When we achieve a level of performance in one area of the business, we look at what’s next, where can we learn from, who is doing it better and how do we execute that,” White says.

It’s a recipe that has other clubs knocking on the door at Red Hill to see how the Broncos – majority owned by News Corp Australia, publisher of QB Monthly – have developed their business model.

“I think particularly within our rugby league community, it is something we should actively pursue,” White says.

“Yes, we are all competitors on the field, but off the field we are all about growing our game, improving it and strengthening it, and it is right that you share ideas and learnings with others.

“If other clubs are getting stronger because they have learned something off of us, then that’s good for the game.”

NRL and AFL scramble to provide premium experience for fans

But while the Broncos are happy to trade tips with other rugby league clubs, challenges from rival codes are gathering strength.

Greenhalgh says the Brisbane sporting market is “extremely competitive”, even when compared to Sydney and Melbourne.

“We are a very small market and we’ve got every code,” Greenhalgh says.

QUT senior lecturer Dr Larry Neale – a specialist in sports marketing, sports fans and consumer behaviour – says Brisbane clubs can’t rely on loyalty alone.

“There is a lot of vicarious achievement going on here; fans wear the merchandise and talk about the team as being ‘we’, instead of they.

“At the same time, every team has the less identified fans; the fair-weather fans who come along either for social reasons or only when they’re winning.”

The average crowd increases at Brisbane Roar games over the past five years is an indication of this.

“You can have everything behind you as a club, but if the team can’t make the finals over a five to 10-year period, you are going to struggle,” Greenhalgh says.

He believes the Roar has the most growth potential of the four major clubs in Brisbane.

“There is a generational change coming. I believe there are more soccer juniors than rugby, rugby league and AFL combined so, as an indicator, if those sorts of juniors start flowing into supporters, then look out.”

The alarm bells may already be ringing for those outside the round ball code.

Roar general manager Sean Dobson says the club grew its membership from 5400 last season to 8100 by the time it had won this year’s league and grand final double.

“At the moment, we are probably tracking for around 12-13,000 members next season,” Dobson says.

The Mariners have set a target of 10k members this season, at tonight's Mariners Forum.
A bit steep me thinks, considering they had just over 5k this season, but lets see what happens.

One would have expected greater increases from BR though over the last couple of years.

Yes, it has grown, but the amount of success it has had would usually see greater increases achieved. Of course it has the greatest potential to grow, as it is the smallest of the crowd averages out of those 4 sides. If it doesn't grow significantly more off the back of this season, then I really do see it as a very hard task moving forward.

Melb City 1456 now - It's great flow-on to see from 'the market' in response to the changes at 'old Heart' - the impact is amazing and measurable with the on-going comparable tally you guys discuss just above.

The thing is, we're a mile out from the season, barely into pre-season even. The 'timing' of the changes and the recent announcements obviously kick started the boost. Villa's fly-in, fly-out obviously provided a fair bit of stimulus or substance to the hype.

Hopefully, as we hope every WC cycle, the some of the enthusiasm of the World Cup hype and too the Socceroos' participation in it, reflects onto the league and A-League clubs' membership drives receive a slight additional boost from that? Because naturally not alot of people... even many fans of this code, may not normally be thinking/following the code at this time of the year. So to pick up some extras during this dormant period is smart strategically, to build up the snowball for later.

Been wondering for a while and I doubt I'm the only one - City/Old Heart have had the membership ticker for a long while now. Victory, Jets, Mariners and perhaps another club at varying points have had some version of one, officially - via their official websites (So not via fans, like Adelaide Reds or Yellow Fever) and that's it.

They are the only club who have consistently, reliably, had a membership ticker on their official site, same place, for the last few seasons. This even despite a change in owners. How and why is that so?! Why are other clubs not doing this, or especially their fellow big city clubs?

I don't know both why other clubs don't or, flipside, why Heart even bother, what makes them different/special to be up-keeping/maintaining that ticker where others don't bother?! Do they have a good IT/Media PR lad or something?!

Seeing it is so expensive for kids to play football, they should all be given a season's pass for $5. Bringing the kids in will naturally bring the parents in. Win, win for all.

tbitm, clinton or anyone have any idea? I'm not au fait in this area, but obviously the official websites are all under the same/similar umbrella, within the FFA? But among the subtle differences is Heart/City constantly maintaining their ticker, right through the seasons - seeming to update 2-3 times a day over the whole season and most of the year. It's quite extra-ordinary compared to all others!

It's kind of bizarre infact - so I wonder what's behind that - is it as simple as their membership department just being quite 'uniquely diligent' in updating the ticker on their official website? :-k

Just a marketing decision I guess. Heart and now city expected big improvement so they think the counter will work for them. The other clubs probably just want more control over the information they release.

How and why is that so?! Why are other clubs not doing this, or especially their fellow big city clubs?

I don't know both why other clubs don't or, flipside, why Heart even bother, what makes them different/special to be up-keeping/maintaining that ticker where others don't bother?! Do they have a good IT/Media PR lad or something?!

tbitm, clinton or anyone have any idea? I'm not au fait in this area, but obviously the official websites are all under the same/similar umbrella, within the FFA? But among the subtle differences is Heart/City constantly maintaining their ticker, right through the seasons - seeming to update 2-3 times a day over the whole season and most of the year. It's quite extra-ordinary compared to all others!

It's kind of bizarre infact - so I wonder what's behind that - is it as simple as their membership department just being quite 'uniquely diligent' in updating the ticker on their official website? :-k

SportsSubs has always handled our memberships, so I'm guessing they provide the facility to generate a banner with the numbers. Marketing-wise it makes sense, especially since we have a competition for members attracting new members. I very much doubt it's the membership department updating the ticker - it would be automated.

I'm predicting MVFC will be lucky to crack 15k.

Why do you say that. They played good football this past season, so there's no reason why their membership should drop.

It will probably drop because of the news that idiot debohun wants to introduce mandatory membership for active fan areas. Massive backlash in melbourne will result in at least a few thousands people not signing up.
