Do we need to change the rules of extra time so as not to get to the penalty shootout one on one.
I recently read this article.

It's the best system we have without going back to Golden Goal.

There's plenty of ideas in my head like:

Corners
Every 5 minutes a player must come off
5 Minutes of Attack, 5 Minutes of Defense

But really, Penalties have been the way to decide the game in the past. I like the fairytale they provide. Sure it's not the best way to decide the winner of the game but I can't way it's the worst

Didn't read the article tbh.

But I've never really seen the whole issue with the current setup. If you play for 2 hours of game time and can't decipher a winner, IMO penalty shootouts are a great way to sort it out.

How about no goalkeepers in extra time. Or they stay on the field but become just another player and can't use their hands.

Were you so concerned that two insignificant Serb FA members knew who you were via your RBB attendance that you chickened out & hid yourself in this palace of dumbarsery. I find that reasoning quite interesting.

In field hockey, which of course based its roots in football, they play "Drop-offs" in ET. Starts 11v11 and every 5 mins 2 players come off. Goes to 9v9 then 7v7. It is also golden goal and are no subs (except for I injuries). If after that it's still drawn they have a shootout. Its a great system and involves a whole new set of tactics. Wouldn't be opposed to something like that. I love shootouts but.

Gradually bringing off players would only serve to make players more susceptible to soft tissue injuries.

The best option is to allow extra substitutions in ET. A fit player coming on will take advantage of the tired legs and push for a result.

Disagree. Taking players off means you can take off the guys likely to fade and suffer the injuries. The extra space means more attack and better scoring opportunities. Also presents more 'hero moments' for individual players.

If we axed it a positive would be that we won't see teams like Costa Rica did against the Dutch of parking the bus for the last 60 to take the game to penalties. Thing is some people see this a see a positive in that it adds pressure to the stronger side and intencity of the game.

But penalties seem like a shit way to determine the best team at a competition like the World Cup.

Just keep adding 15 minutes and you get an additional substitute every change of ends imo.

Unlikely that teams are going to bring off their Gerrard's, their Ibrahimovic's, or their Messi's who might be suffering from cramp as they chase a result, regardless of the scenario. So they're going to bring of 'support' players, now leaving these already cramping players to have to cover more space on the park. There's no way that doesn't cause more injury problems.

Leave it as it is.
Shootouts are the most basic fundamentals of the game distilled into 10 kicks.

1 player kicking a ball. One player trying to stop it.
It's a skill so easy we can all do it our sleep, but add the pressure and it's a whole new thing. I love them.

Disclaimer:
I'm a keeper.

I would however like to see the teams being given one more sub to be used in extra time. Might encourage tactical switches and see more games sorted in Extra time instead of teams bunkering down and hanging on for penalties, or the better team with greater squad depth being able to take greater advantage of that prowess.

None of the alternatives put forward in this thread are better than the current model. The magique foam and the goal line tech are the best changes to have taken place have made very little impact on the overall game.

Well in FIFA. Now to implement it into major confed tourneys.

But then it'll become baseball with ridiculously late finish if no one can score.

Not that anyone here probably likes baseball at all but some of the greatest games are the ones that go into extra innings. Same for basketball and even penalty shootout a like the 15-14 (or whatever it was) Liverpool-Middlesborough game.

I imagine the same would be true for a game that goes to 5 extra times for example. Extra times suck now since one team is always looking for the penalties.

I honestly think this is a more 'purist' position when you think about it. Teams should play to win.
