Isn't kardinia getting a second redevelopment sooner rather than later for the ablett and brownlow stands?

Labor have promised to replace the Brownlow and Jennings stands if they win the election to bring the capacity up to 36,000.

They have also promised a 15,000 capacity oval for Ballarat.

We all know which one you prefer
But that 15K ground would have to be the northern oval wouldn't it?

Yeah it would be North Ballarat's ground, which has things like as potential rail connection and parking going for it, however any development would by restricted with roads directly behind both the goals, this would be purely an AFL ground for North Melbourne or the Western Bulldogs. Although there were whispers last year Cricket Victoria were looking for a regional ground to play the odd Sheffield Shield match at and deemed Kardina too narrow, however with the Junctional Oval deal looking likely I'm not sure any more.
The thing about Ballarat is we will never see an A-League side based here so Morshead Park as it is now is perfect for football for the foreseeable future and easily accommodates NPL and FFA Cup matches. And realistically it could comfortably host a second division team if the day ever came.

New artist renders popped up today for the new Townsville CBD Stadium;

Trying to find better ones that are shown in the newspaper (looks like a horseshoe shape with only 3 stands to begin with that can be expanded later).

The upgrade of Pirtek stadium has had one obstacle removed with the Eels to develop training fields and a high performance centre in North Parramatta. Hopefully none of the promised funds will be diverted to this project.

Id expect that whatever part of the original funding that the Eels planned on using for the training fields at Pirtek will be diverted to the new site. Will be an interesting project if it gets off the ground, on the downside that is a fair bit of public park space that will be absorbed. In a perfect world the council would use those funds to complete the Parramatta Park upgrade, and other services, but we all know how corrupt local councils are. The good thing about this is that it separates the stadium from the training project so that the stadium is the only focus. Lets see where it goes to from here.

Also great thread, i love stadium infrastructure, hopefully there will be actual news and things to discuss.

Canberra’s bold plan for new football stadium
http://www.a-league.com.au/article/canberras-bold-plan-for-new-football-stadium/1mcqi5wsoiv6a11n7bq49zfy3b
Monday, 15 September 2014 - John Greco

Canberra is hoping to attract more Hyundai A-League teams as part of a multi-million dollar upgrade by the University of Canberra (UC) to improve its sporting facilities.
A report in the Canberra Times newspaper on Monday outlined UC’s plans to invite Capital Football to make the campus’ sporting hub their home when they add a football stadium to their state-of-the-art facilities.

With Super Rugby club ACT Brumbies already calling the Bruce Campus home, Capital Football have been asked to invest $5 million to help produce a purpose-built football venue.

The federal and ACT governments, the university and other Canberra sporting bodies would also contribute to the boutique football venue.

‘‘We would love to have something at the University of Canberra that can fill the gap between the big venues and the small venues,’’ Capital Football chief executive Heather Reid said.

‘‘McKellar and Deakin are our only two soccer-specific venues in Canberra.

“If we’re going to grow and attract more A-League teams to play in Canberra, or stage more FFA Cup games, then we need a venue with a greater capacity.

“There’s nothing in between the smaller venues and then Canberra Stadium.”

The new facility will have television-quality lighting, which means it can host Hyundai A-League pre-season fixtures as well as potentially more Westfield FFA Cup matches.

It will also be the home of Capital Football and Westfield W-League team Canberra United.

It’s understood the new football pitch will take just under 15 months to complete once construction starts.

Absolutely fantastic! No need for a second large stadium in the ACT especially considering the population's recent attendance rate but a small, professional training and administrative base is perfect for development, and potential A-League expansion!

Not too mention paying $180m for the build. Seriously, how CBUS Stadium is worth that much is one of life's great mystery's. It should have cost <$50m at the most.

Sounds good, but I don't see any light towers in the artists renders... Given the mini-furore over FFA Cup games being moved away from suburban grounds...terrible flaw or just a shit render?

EDIT: I just saw them, gee they're tiny...might pay to check they'll hold enough lights to provide the required lighting under Australian Standards for a competitive game of football, not just training.

Its a suburban ground with bugger all parking and ordinary public transport. There is good reason why the Tigers only play a handful of games there every season.

Used by Victory for a few games, including Carlos' first Victory game in preseason against the Jets in 2008, a few W-League fixtures, and now they will play an A-League premiership season game at Simonds Stadium in 2015, 2016 and 2017, but most notably on that great night qualifying for the ACL Group Stage against a very tough and talented Muangthong United:

Skinniest ground in the AFL with the furthest front row seat at the widest part of the flanks being much closer than Etihad, located less than 400 metres from South Geelong train station, which is about an hour from the Melbourne CBD, and about 1000 metres from the Geelong CBD.

The seats are closer than the stadium with Australia's club record crowd holder in Etihad, closer than any of the 95,000 that saw Victory v Liverpool or Australia vs Greece at the MCG, and closer than anyone at the 2006 World Cup final at the Olimpiastadion Berlin or will be at the next World Cup final at Luzhniki in Moscow.

On the broadcast the commentators had nothing but praise for the quality of the pitch, which is hardly surprising seeing as it is all but abandoned by the AFL, but also because of support from the Geelong City Council, who own the stadium. In fact, and apologies for those of you that have already heard this anecdote, but when I worked for a news network in Melbourne that sent me down to cover Geelong's precious AFL team, the Cats, presenting their first AFL premiership trophy in a generation to their fans, I spoke to a groundsman employed by the council who confirmed to me that they forced the club in their moment of triumph to hold the event in the stadium parking lot to avoid fouling the grass for a Melbourne Victory open training session scheduled for the next day! Imagine that happening in Melbourne.

Was of course a part of the plan for Australia's 2022 World Cup bid, earmarked for a major upgrade to a 44k capacity and even to host a Quarter Final:

Basically it's best moment was providing the venue for the very most important of the rare #feedings of the Brox:

As far as Victorian oval venues go, this is as good as it gets for football, and based on that great game Kardinia Park could become as renowned and beloved as any home for football in this country if only the football was provided for the place.

Geelong has the Wiltonian Hattrick of demographic conditions conducive for a fanbase for football: young males (it's a uni town), ethnics (lots of Dutch, Italians and Croatians; 1.1% speak Croatian at home compared to the national average of 0.3%) and suburban families (especially growing fast as a dormitory city of Melbourne).

Just off the top of my head Matt Spiranovic, Adrian Leijer, Josip Skoko, Joey Didulica and Steve Horvat all hail from the area. The Croatian-based North Geelong Warriors have been in the upper echelons of the Victorian State Leagues for donks, and in fact yesterday won promotion to the top division of the NPLV. The Melbourne Knights were even once based in Geelong.

The 300,000 people in the G21 region love their Cats, but they're very parochial for their city in general and would, like regional cities across the country, get behind anything representing them on the national level.

The possibility of co-branding exists with the Cats; their semi-pro basketball team is called the Geelong Supercats and no one seems to mind.

The current mayor of Geelong, Darryn Lyons, has stated he will back a Geelong team: "Whatever I was asked to do. I'd do 100 per cent." Granted, that interview was given in his past life as a multi millionaire, but clearly his love of the city is stronger than ever, and owing to his past business experience he is perhaps the most uniquely positioned Australian public official to fully appreciate the global commercial power of football.

TL;DR: Geelong A2-League team, plz.

Edited by paladisious: 15/9/2014 12:26:38 AM

Great post mate!

I reckon if and when they decide to give Victoria another team, i would be all for them having it setup in Geelong. It's an area that has proven to support sporting teams in mass unlike canberra, nth qld etc.

They would get very large crowds for matches against victory and city, which could make up 2-4 games a season there. Plus Sydney and WSW would be large crowd pullers. So all in all I think Geelong could avg 10k + crowds easily. And it wouldn't eat in Victories or City's support base.

I am all for big inner city teams, but if they had to introduce a regional team i would strongly consider Geelong in VIC and South Coast in NSW.

So apparently qe2 does have good seats according to some. With a few modifications (there is only one permanent stand which i think is the west)(( below on the left)) the ground would be good.
I lived on the southside, it is very easy to get to.
All the stands can be configured.
It is home to queensland athletics, however it is a big piece of land. There are two tracks. The warm up track could become the main track, and a new warm up track built.
They could even move some of the existing stands to build a stand for that track.

I guess the Nix,s plan to build a temporary stadium for 3 matches is not a bad idea. The cricket WC shuts Westpac down for over a month. Would be interesting to see the budget. Putting up 9000 tempory seating and all the other costs would not be cheap. However they admit the stadium charges are so high at Wespac that they don't make any money there.

I like the idea of smaller boutique stadiums....if they are designed properly they can have a great atmosphere. The trouble with lots of stadiums here compared to Europe is the stands are always miles too far from the edge of the pitch. Even that photo of the Nix's new stadium has the stand 20+ metres from the touch.
