"The thing abut melbourne is that a 50k+ rectangular venue would sit idle for 360 days a year" ....

This is more "but we are unique" type of thinking that we must have several competing codes vying for occupancy of the same stadium.

Do you know how many stadiums in Europe sit idle for 360 days per year - it's probably over a thousand. We are not unique, we can build a stadium and have it sit idle for 360 days of the year. It does work if you fund it properly.

The AFL isn't gonna 'block' the Victory or any other paying tenant from Etihad.

But the problem with Victoria is that the government has always given fark all to stadiums.

The MCG has been built largely off the MCC Trust fundraising, and Etihad was privately built.

The only stadium the Vic Govt has paid for 100% is AAMI Park. Don't hold your breath for them to do that again.

Incorrect. "built largely off the MCC Trust". Some of the MCG has been paid for by the MCC Trust, which has received money from the State and Commonwealth Governments, and City of Melbourne. There has also been direct investment by State Government. The land on which Etihad sits was essentially 'gifted' to a private consortium. ALL of the old VFL stadia, that are currently mostly used by AFL clubs as training venues, sit on Council owned land and have improvements paid for by local councils and state government. All of the clubs pay essentially 'peppercorn leases' to their local councils. AFL is simply getting a free ride when compared to Football. As to the 360 days a year argument, rubbish. A well managed 50K stadium could pay for itself with events.

Incorrect on all counts

The MCG was overwhelmingly rebuilt through long term contracts between the AFL and the MCC - the current one that still has a quarter of a century left - which enables a 100K MCC membership alone worth over $60M a year.

The AFL paid $30M for the freehold land that Etihad was built, to be handed to it in 2025. The stadium was financed by a long term contract between the AFL and the developers which proved so lucrative for the operators the AFL just agreed to pay $200 million to take ownership 8 years ahead of schedule.

There is no chance of a 50K rectangular stadium built in Melbourne. Why would "events" be held there rather than an existing 55K stadium with a roof? MRS is perfectly big enough for Melbournes needs, with the odd bigger match at etihad or the MCG.

Do they? Gemrally curious but I would imagine most stadiums have a Tennant?  A 50k stadium in Melbourne would not.

I'd assume Victory would be an anchor tenant of a 50k or more seat stadium, they alone would reach 50% of 50k at least 15 times a year on average in all comps.

That's before you include big rugby games, the natural home of the third neutral leg of the State of Origin, international friendlies like the ICC, American Football, and that's without even mentioning the Socceroos, and non sporting events like concerts.

A marquee rectangular venue is a easy home run for a city that does so well at hosting events.

It is hard to predict where sports will be in 10 years time.

Melbourne may have 1 more BBL franchise playing at Etihad. Esports may be once a 1month or even every weekend. Because it has a roof it can acheive a lot.

AFL will want to be involved. So you can count on AFLX and AFLXW and AFLXWJR (thats AFLX for Women but juniors) or whatever wanting to be front and centre in any talks even if it doesnt involve them. We have seen what is happening in Sydney now, and they have stated during the Damo GF fiasco, they will not help an "opponent" as they put it as they see football purely as a competitor.

A 30 game home season is roughly 90 hours occupancy, or less than 4 days so yes they are unoccupied for most of the year. There are ways to make stadiums work.

@ paladiscious

Lol. No they don't - but the point is you don't need to cram Rugby, League, concerts, football, more concerts, boxing, yet more concerts into a stadium to make it work. The dickheads that own our stadiums have convinced us we do, but we don't - Victory (of all clubs) could have a stadium all on their own.

The folly of this will come to pass when WSW get their new stadium. They will pay more than Roar do at Suncorp, share it with multiple rugby league teams, host Rugby 7s and Rugby 10s and yes, the dreaded concerts will turn it in to a cow-paddock.

We are fools to believe stadiums cost $300m+ and must have multiple tenants

Why don't Penninsula Power move from AJ Kelly Reserve to Dolphin Stadium. No football team playing there, it's a bigger stadium, and it means come FFA Cup time they have played there all year and it's a real advantage. Let's not kid ourselves. This is not the first crowd to support Penn Power. The megas have come out before.

I would say its a combination of 2 things, 1 Cahill pulled out rather late so they had probably sold a lot of tickets before that and also as you said.

IMO it would be best if Dolphins consumed them, if they agreed, and have them play as Dolphins FC. Come to some agreement, somehow.

They also recently got a train line, not sure if it is working yet. I think when the upgrade was happening they mentioned Power would play there.

$315k study finds Coast stadium is in the right place

REVAMPED: Sunshine Coast Stadium.
REVAMPED: Sunshine Coast Stadium.Shadforths constructions

A $315,000 study has found the Sunshine Coast Stadium at Bokarina is the best place for a national-standard stadium to be developed.

The Sunshine Coast Council commissioned a Stadium Feasibility Study by KPMG, which assessed four possible sites - the existing stadium; Honey Farm Rd, Meridan Plains; Diddillibah Rd, Nambour; and private land - for a national stadium to be developed.

Those four were whittled down to a possible two, with the existing stadium site, and a council-owned site at Honey Farm Rd, Meridan Plains in contention.

The findings of the study will be presented to the council on Thursday.

The findings of the study, which were recommended for council approval, are that the Sunshine Coast Stadium at Bokarina should be endorsed as the region's "preferred location for a significant stadium development" bringing it up to a 25,000-seat facility. The study cites proximity to public transport and economic benefit for its findings.

Coast councillors have been advised to support a detailed feasibility study on the stadium expansion, while the alternate site, Honey Farm Rd, should be earmarked for development and use as a "significant community sporting precinct".

Tourism and events portfolio holder Councillor Jason O'Pray said the money was well spent on the study as it was a "critical, region-wide decision" which would impact the next 50-100 years of the region.

"This is something we can't stuff up," Cr O'Pray said.

"I'll certainly be supporting it (officer recommendations based on the findings)."

He said it was important other areas were considered, and said future expansion of the stadium would help draw more sporting and cultural events to the region.

But Division 7 Councillor Ted Hungerford, governance and customer service portfolio holder with interests in financial management, questioned the necessity of the study.

"I did see that as probably being a bit unnecessary, it was pretty obvious," Cr Hungerford said.

"I thought it was pretty obvious because it's the main stadium on the Coast. It seemed it was pretty straight forward to me."

KPMG was initially awarded $213,761 for the project, and was given an additional $101,036 to carry out further assessments after more information was requested by the council.

If the preferred option is supported on Thursday, a detailed feasibility study will begin on the Sunshine Coast Stadium site, which was preferred for its superior public transport connectivity among other factors.

Cr O'Pray said he would like to see an integrated ticketing system providing free public transport to future event goers.

This is really a "no shit" outcome.

Whilst this is a good redevelopment for the local community, local cricket club and Heidelberg as an NPL team, its actually a missed opportunity for a new A league type stadium. If Heidelberg ever make the A league, they'll probably have to end up playing at AAMI. I would've preferred a bit more ambition, with a long term vision for a 25k stadium down the track.

$11.5 million doesn't buy much more than what is planned. The pitch realignment is a big deal because it removes any ambiguity over what direction the place is moving in.

They can improve the stadium further later, they hardly need a larger stadium at the moment and won't for probably more than a decade or so.

We are please to announce that the Sporting precinct is one step closer,
Melton City Council has resolved to award a contract for the construction of the brand new City Vista Pavilion and Sports Field, in Fraser Rise.
The $12 million project will see the new sporting precinct built adjacent to the future City Vista Community Hub.
When completed, the precinct will have two grass soccer pitches and two synthetic soccer pitches, all with spectator fencing, and sports field lighting.
As part of the pavilion, there will be a bistro, commercial kitchen, canteen space, umpires rooms, first aid rooms, eight change rooms, and storage, among other features.
Once construction begins, it will take about a year to complete.
City of Melton Mayor, Cr Sophie Ramsey, said the pavilion would help promote health and wellbeing, and active lifestyles, while supporting the community.
“The infrastructure within the City must continue to grow and develop along with our population,” Cr Ramsey said.
“The main grass soccer pitch at City Vista Pavilion and Sports Field will be built to national competition (NPL) standard in terms of area, surface and sports lighting, which will attract high-level competition and athletes to the City.
"At the same time, the Pavilion will be a great place for families to meet up, socialise, and enjoy local sports.”
The project is based on a partnership with George Cross Soccer Club who will contribute $1 million to the cost of the development, then operate and maintain the pavilion and sports fields for 20 years.
