What a joke.

How about we have a World Cup with "reusable" stadia that get reused right where they are? Crazy, right?

Overhead of new Townsville CBD stadium design
Overhead of new Townsville CBD stadium design

Tuxy Subjects: How stadium won’t be a white elephant

TAXI drivers feel they have the answer to all of the world’s issues. The construction of Townsville’s new inner city stadium is no different.

“So you work at the paper, aye?” That stadium is a waste of money. What about our water issues? That coin could be better spent.”

I’ve heard this a few times as I get driven around the city, but others are equally as excited about the town’s new $250 million toy, especially Cowboys fans.

But given that price tag, the pressure is on Townsville’s politicians to ensure it doesn’t lay dormant when the NRL isn’t in town.

It was heartening to hear of Townsville Enterprise Limited’s intent to target Australian female teams like the Matildas and Jillaroos to play at the stadium, as reported in The Bulletin on Thursday.

Bids for 2021 women’s and 2027 men’s rugby union world cups are also being lined up, with the stadium set to be ready for use by 2020.

The ‘thump, thump, thump’ ringing around the city is the sound of the footings being hammered into the stadium site. Here’s a few ideas how we can ensure the stadium doesn’t turn into a sporting white elephant.

Matildas

Even if you don’t follow the round-ball game, chances are you’ve heard of Sam Kerr. The backflip-wielding, goal scoring sensation is the poster girl for the explosion in interest over Australia’s female national team. After a string of victories this year the Matildas are ranked in the world’s top five and increased TV coverage has significantly improved their profile. The Matildas attracted nearly 17,000 fans to their clash with Brazil in September, and there’s no reason Townsville couldn’t do likewise.

W-League/A-League

Sure, the North Queensland Fury’s foray into the A-League wasn't exactly successful. But perhaps Townsville should consider chasing a franchise in the female club competition. Canberra is the only team in the W-League which isn’t borne from an A-League club, and as a result they enjoy enviable media interest in the capital. The WNBL’s Townsville Fire have been embraced by the city and a W-League side should attract a similar following. However, North Queensland United won’t field a women’s team in the National Premier League Queensland until at least 2019, and the community would have to prove they can sustain a team at that level first. Who knows, it could perhaps lead to the city having another crack at re-entering the A-League. The Brisbane Roar could do worse than to bring a game up here, rather than play on the Gold Coast in front of a sparse crowd like earlier this month.

Jillaroos

They’ve just won a rugby league World Cup and the NRL has just announced a new women’s club competition will begin next year. It’s no secret rugby league is a religion in the north and the Cowboys are investigating the possibility of fielding their own team. The Jillaroos now have the pulling power to stage stand-alone games and they would get a good crowd to the stadium when the Cowboys are playing out of town, or as part of a double header with an NRL match.

Boxing

Jeff Horn’s had two Battle of Brisbane duels. But what about the Tussle of Townsville? Although he’s based in the Queensland capital, the Sunshine State has embraced the 29-year-old as a living legend and the new stadium would be packed if he brought the boxing circus up north. It would cost us a pretty penny but the tourism and interest it would generate for Townsville worldwide through ESPN coverage in the US and so forth would ensure the city gets their money back, and then some.

Reds and/or Wallabies

Would the Queensland Reds entertain the prospect of playing a game regularly in Townsville? It’s a ploy which has worked well for other clubs across all football clubs in a bid to improve their bottom line, and expand their supporter base. Super Rugby is battling to attract crowds and the novelty of a once-a-year game in Townsville should ensure a crowd bigger than the Reds would expect to achieve in Brisbane. The Wallabies recently played a Test match against Argentina at Canberra Stadium, a facility which has a similar capacity to what Townsville’s stadium will have.

Embedded in this story is one of the fundamental problems with sports administrators and political attitude to clubs - teams have a home, they have roots; taking home games away just to make a council feel its over indulgence hasn’t created a white elephant is just wrong.

If Townsville hasn’t enough content to make the stadium viable, build a cheaper one. Don’t fake it and expect teams to move hundreds of km’s to sort your mess out!

It's the AFL way!

Maybe if Qld Stadiums didn’t basically tie a noose around teams necks for stadium rental you could still have a summer tenant.

The Fury were doomed when they needed 10k on match day (or something similar) just to break even for the game.

New $26 million soccer complex to be built at Gepps Cross by Football Federation SA

A NEW $26 million soccer hub featuring a 5000-capacity stadium, four synthetic pitches, an indoor futsal complex and 10 outdoor five-a-side courts will be built at Gepps Cross.

The Advertiser can exclusively reveal Football Federation SA has received State Government funding to establish a State Centre of Football on 15ha of vacant land at the State Sports Park.

The governing body believed the facility, which would be operational by 2020, would boost participation numbers beyond the 40,000 men, women and juniors who play the game in SA.

It would also provide a venue for local club games, state development programs, and national and international tournaments, as well as school and community group use.

FFSA chief executive Michael Carter said the “world class” complex would attract up to 1500 participants weekly.

“It’s got great potential to be the best (soccer) centre in Australia,” Carter said.

“It’s something all of the football community can be very proud of because they’re all going to get an opportunity to participate out of it.

“For this to come to fruition is wonderful for the game and it will be a game-changer for the state.”

The centre will boast a main artificial pitch with a 1000-seat grandstand and standing areas for an extra 4000 spectators.

The ground would be capable of hosting men’s and women’s National Premier Leagues SA games and FFA Cup matches.

It would also be compliant for W-League and National Youth League clashes and would be a potential training venue should Australia stage the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

Three additional full-sized synthetic pitches, two with 200-seat stands, are also planned along with change rooms, a gymnasium and a football museum.

Juniors Jayden Kabos (FFSA Skillaroos), Remi Maunder (Fulham United) and Jordan Zielinski (Adelaide Olympic) are excited about the new hub. Picture: Naomi Jellicoe

An indoor futsal centre, with three courts suitable for hosting national championships, will be built at the complex, while FFSA will move its administration headquarters to the site.

Carter said participation numbers would be boosted by the five-a-side pitches, which would host social competitions similar to popular centres interstate and overseas.

“This is for seven-day-a-week, 40-minute games for children right through to 60-year-old adults who used to play but don’t have the ability to participate any more,” Carter said.

“It will be a real destination for spectators to enjoy, and also for players to experience what it’s like to play at a world-class facility.

“The whole facility will be made available to all clubs, including amateur league clubs.

“It allows us to consolidate all of our pathway programs for the boys and girls at one venue, and it’s in the heartland of football.”

An artist’s impression of the 10 synthetic five-a-side pitches at the new Gepps Cross State Centre of Football. Picture: Supplied

The State Government committed $19 million to stage one of the project which would begin this year on land east of the Croatian Sports Centre.

It would likely include the main pitch, second full-sized field, futsal and five-a-side complexes, and administration centre.

Carter said the federation would seek the remaining $7 million from other partners to complete the hub.

Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis said the centre would enhance SA’s reputation as “the spiritual home of Australian football”.

“It will enable the FFSA to develop the game at a community level while hosting national and international competitions,” Koutsantonis said.

Domenic Trimboli, of Fulham United, and Izaak Zielinski, of Adelaide Olympic, will benefit from their clubs’ relocations to improved grounds. Picture: Naomi Jellicoe

The complex will house a multicultural program aimed at educating young migrants through football and creating employment opportunities.

Its construction will also open up space at existing venues for Fulham United to relocate to Adelaide Shores and Adelaide Olympic to move its junior teams to the Parks.

Olympic chairman Stavros Parissos said consolidating his club’s 160 junior players with their senior counterparts at the Angle Park ground would allow it to grow.

“Our juniors from day one have been saying ‘when can we move there with our seniors’ because where they are Ferryden Park, they’re not able take on more kids,” Parissos said.

“We’ve only got one team in each age group because we’ve had to knock back so many kids.

“Now we can consolidate the whole club and have one venue for all our juniors and seniors, and all of our volunteers who are exhausted from having to go between multiple venues.”

The State Centre of Football will boast a 5000-capacity stadium and a new administration base for Football Federation SA. Picture: Supplied

Parissos backed the Gepps Cross centre which he said would help SA catch up to facilities in other states and promote active lifestyles among participants of all ability levels.

Fulham United junior player Remi Maunder was looking forward to trying out the new pitches.

The nine-year-old, who dreamt of playing for Adelaide United and the Matildas, hoped to see some of her idols train there if Australia secured the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

“It would be pretty fun to play soccer on the new fields,” Remi said.

“And the (women’s) World Cup would be cool. I’d like to go and watch that.”

The State Government funding formed part of $30 million in grants handed out for projects at the State Sports Centre.

This included an $8 million Super-drome upgrade and $2 million BMX training facility, as previously reported by The Advertiser.

It would also fund a $1 million change room redevelopment at the State Hockey Centre.

Australia's bid to host the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup could include a long-awaited solution to Brisbane's rectangular stadium shortage.

Source: AAP
7 FEB 2018 - 5:29 PM UPDATED YESTERDAY 5:29 PM

A $4 million funding boost from the federal government confirmed on Tuesday means FFA is now full steam ahead in their pursuit of the hosting rights for the women's football showpiece.

Brisbane Roar managing director David Pourre believes the opportunity is ripe to ensure the bid leaves behind a legacy in the form of a boutique stadium for men's and women's football if successful - an idea with tentative FFA support.

A-League chief Greg O'Rourke said this week it was clear some teams were playing in stadiums that were "too big" for them, with the Roar - who have an average attendance of 8,993 this season in the 52,500-seat Suncorp Stadium - a perfect example.

The problem is there are no alternatives in Brisbane.

Ballymore Stadium is old and decaying and would need significant investment to bring the 18,000-seat arena up to standard for A-League and W-League matches, while a rebuild of Perry Park has been discussed in previous years.

Suncorp would almost certainly be included in any Women's World Cup bid but would likely be oversized for most games.

Government provides $4 million for Women's World Cup bid

The Matildas are one step closer to hosting the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup after the federal government confirmed it will provide $4 million for formal bidding.
There is also barely any room in Suncorp's event calendar to host a second Brisbane team, with expansion likely in the 2019-20 season.

Other sports like rugby league and rugby union could also make regular use of a smaller rectangular ground.

"FFA believes a boutique rectangular stadium in Brisbane would be of great benefit to the city and to football and a great asset within the context of a FIFA Women's World Cup in 2023 should Australia be successful in winning the bid," an FFA spokesperson told AAP.

Pourre said it was imperative FFA sat down with the Queensland government to find a way to make it happen.

"Suncorp is a fantastic venue. But with the Women's World Cup fast approaching, now is the time to improve infrastructure for football in Queensland, which has never really happened at all, and get something purpose-built to compliment Suncorp," Pourre said.

"They have it in Sydney, in Melbourne - we don't want to be left behind.

"We would help out in any which way we can to support this becoming a reality."

Aloisi welcomes Brisbane stadium push

Brisbane Roar coach John Aloisi has welcomed a push for a new boutique stadium in the city, which could form part of Australia's bid to host the 2023 Women's World Cup.

And Queensland's Commonwealth Games minister Kate Jones says there is a clear economic case for investment in sporting infrastructure.

Roar managing director David Pourre has seized on FFA's bid as an opportunity to lobby for an alternative rectangular venue to compliment Suncorp Stadium, where they currently play home games.

A-League chiefs are encouraging the Roar to find another ground with the 52,500-seat Suncorp oversized for many of their fixtures but there is nowhere else in Brisbane up to standard for professional sport.

Aloisi said a more intimate venue would be a boon for the code and city.

"We've seen down in Melbourne what AAMI Park has done for Victory and City and it's great to have those boutique stadiums ... you get a good crowd in and the atmosphere can be second to none," he said.

The two obvious options are an upgrade of Ballymore Stadium or a rebuild of Perry Park.

It's understood FFA had already been in discussion with the Queensland Rugby Union over redevelopment options at Ballymore, where the Roar currently train and A-League expansion hopefuls Brisbane City intend to play their games.

The QRU has been seeking a solution to Ballymore, which seats 18,000 but is in a state of disrepair, for more than a decade.

"I'm sure if they've got the money they can fix anything," Aloisi said.

A new venue may actually prove to be a necessity if Brisbane is to be involved in hosting a Women's World Cup.

The Brisbane Broncos, Queensland Reds and State of Origin are all usually booked at Suncorp in June, when the tournament would be held and there is nowhere else suitable to stage those matches.

There are also doubts over Suncorp's capacity to host NRL or A-League expansion sides with the stadium's event calendar nearly full.

Any new stadium would require state or federal funding.

"I think that's a question that the sports minister has a view on but we know that investing in sporting infrastructure does drive investment and economic activity," Ms Jones told AAP.

Check out the new Aue stadium. Definitely what the Roar would need. Regensburg have a nice one too.
