SOUTH Melbourne coach Chris Taylor says his side is hellbent on defending its National Premier League Victoria title and making the Round of 32 of the FFA Cup this season.

The former National Soccer League powerhouse last year won its first Victorian title since 2006 and will kick off the defence of its crown against last year’s runner-up, Oakleigh Cannons, at Lakeside Stadium on Friday.

Taylor hasn’t rested on his laurels during the off-season, bringing in 10 new players, including former Adelaide United midfielder Jake Barker-Daish, and started its campaign with a 2-1 win over Melbourne Knights in last week’s Community Shield.

And after missing out on the inaugural FFA Cup last year, Taylor said making waves in the national knockout competition is also a priority this season.

“We understand we’re the measuring stick for the league now, so we wanted to improve to try and go back-to-back in the league,” Taylor said.

“Also the FFA Cup is that added attraction, so that’s one of the big things we’re targeting this year as well.

“We know there’s going to be some stiff opposition — Bentleigh has recruited well, Oakleigh has recruited well and there’s two or three others that have also improved — so we know it’s not going to be easy, but we also feel that we’re up for the challenge.”

By winning NPL1 last season, Avondale earnt promotion to the Victorian top flight for the first time in its history.

Its Round 1 clash is against Melbourne Knights at Knights Stadium tomorrow night and assistant coach Adam Inglese said there could be no better introduction in to the competition.

“It’s huge for the club,” Inglese said.

“It’s been a lot of work to get to this stage, but now we can celebrate it and hopefully have a good season.

“Melbourne Knights is a huge club with a very proud history, they’ve been at the top level in the old NSL, so for us it’s an honour to be in a competition with these guys.

“But now we’ve got to not only admire them but go out and do the business against them and that’s what we’re looking forward to doing.”

If the dream MV clash came up, would they build temporary stands behind the goals or just use both sides? Or would the police try to force it to go to aami?

If they do make it, would chuckle if they flopped out as unceremoniously and flaccidly as Melbourne Knights did last year.

I hope they go far though. Need State League teams to be strong and make it a viable competition.

I would like too see Marconi, South Melbourne, West Adelaide, Fury (if they can get past Heat) and Fire (if they can win Sunshine Coast/Gympie then beat Sharks). Perhaps Oakleigh and Brisbane City. Hopefully we get some repeat names but some new ones too.

No matter where you're from, MV v SM is the clear dream match that will take Australian football full circle.

So far it's only happened once (with Langerak on loan from Victory in SM's goal) in a friendly, but can't wait until it happens in a competitive senior match for silverware, and as of now the FFA Cup is the only chance for that to happen.

If South Melbourne were drawn hosts, they'd be stupid to not hire AAMI Park for the game, as they'd make hundreds of thousands in gate receipts for a hypothetical attendance of 20k, which is pessimistic in my view.

Of course. The feel good "Arnie catching up with old mates" thing from fox made things a bit too friendly. Add in Rudin and some other cross overs and the thing seemed a bit incestuous.

It lacked something.

Everybody is waiting for this one.

I'd love a south v melb city match at lakeside....just to see the make up of the crowd and if we could outnumber them.

South v Adelaide United would be the most epic of all though since they dumped us out of the finals in our last Nsl match.

I know sm v MV is the dream match up, but going up against our old Nsl rivals like Perth and Adelaide would also be great.

yeh I'd love to see a packed Lakeside stadium for a big FFA Cup tie against a MV or WSW. Hopefully we can qualify for the last 32 this year. After several shite years South have really got their on field act together thanks to coach Chris Taylor who is one of those pragmatic, no nonsense results based coaches. Last nights NPL R1 home win against Oakleigh was the perfect example. A grinding 1-0 win and most South fans walking out of the stadium shaking their heads at how we got away with that one. Oakleigh threw everything at us after we scored (a lucky own goal!!!) in the 30th min but we held on with some excellent defending. Our new keeper Roganovic was outstanding, he was on Hearts books a few seasons ago. Fantastic to see the turnout, around the 3,000 mark on a warm balmy evening. Also good to smell the return of the gyros!!!!!

Bentleigh is now Melbourne's best known Greek backed team, South blew its chance last year.

So how come they played In front of a couple hundred last week whilst south played in front of 3,500? Bentleigh probably won't even make it back to the FFA cup if they actually face an npl side in the dockerty cup this time round, that's not to say we will either but they're a nothing club overall who actually survive on clubs like south Giving them a big pay day when they play them at there ground. Btw technically they're Cypriot backed.

The current West Adelaide is a different club to the original WA Hellas who played in the NSL.
