Western Sydney Wanderers sign betting.club sponsorship

Western Sydney Wanderers sign betting.club sponsorship

Online bookmaker betting.club has become a sponsor of Australian soccer club Western Sydney Wanderers.

The three-year deal will see the locally based betting.club, which offers a social betting platform, granted a range of signage and PR benefits relating to the A-League side, including appearances at corporate events. No financial terms were released.

"We are pleased to have betting.club on board for a three-year period, they are another youthful organisation with links to Western Sydney," said Wanderers chief executive John Tsatsimas. "At the Wanderers, we continue to grow our partnership categories to ensure a solid foundation for future growth and success of our club and our partners."
•Western Sydney Wanderers extend with Pepper Group

Kelly Signell, the chief executive of betting.club, said that the deal would "help us reach the customer base of our shareholders’ catchment areas and solidify our presence and support for Greater Western Sydney".

Western Sydney Wanderers, who became Australia's first Asian club champions in December 2014, finished a disappointing ninth in the A-League last season but have rebounded in 2015/16 and are currently second in the table after 14 games.

It's a shame... When representing a demographic in which gambling is a major issues for many individuals and families, this is pretty poor form.
Money is money, but personally I think it's sad.

A number of members are saying similar, not illegal, not immoral but would rather not have them on board.

However the counter is look at every single Rugby league club in Western Sydney and how much pokies rip off the public and they fund the Team, not a high moral ground I know but...........

Cant stand gambling sponsorship.

Gambling is such a huge issue and the last thing it needs is to be promoted like this.

I used to have this view that gambling was bad... (and it is to a certain extent).

But, so long as you can afford it, it is really no different to any other vice. The problem is, some people can't.

Personally I think that the message that one should "gamble responsibly" can't be repeated often enough.

Its a game for everyone. Its not pale, male, or stale. It transcends race, gender, economic status. Its for everyone. - Tal Karp

Yeah quick better get rid of McDonalds too while they're at it hey. Pretty sure when representing a demographic in which obesity is a major issue for many individuals and families, this is pretty poor form...

What other sponsors should we tear apart so the league can go under because no sponsorship is deemed non shameful?

Smoking isn't illegal either, would you like to see Sydney FC sponsored by Marlboro?

It isn't illegal, but it is morally shady - members of the club have the right to decide what does and doesn't define their club.

I'm personally non-plussed about it all (I just bought a $5 scratchie myself during my lunch break) and there is precedence of this in the league (Intralot at the Vuck, Centrebet at the Jets too iirc?) but I can understand some people who may have been involved in the scourge that is gambling addiction may be uneasy about it.

On the flip side of the coin, did anyone notice that the Australian ODI team is currently being sponsored by VB on a home tour? First time I've seen that in 20 years - alcohol, along with tobacco companies, have been shirt sponsor taboo in Australia for quite a while now. They used to only wear the VB shirts when they were touring overseas. Seems like Cricket Australia is doing all they can to gain a buck.

Australia has had Carlton Mid sponsorship on their ODI jersey, at home, for a few years before this summer.

Smoking is also legal but that doesn't mean it's good for people.

For a club that wants to pride itself on it's community focus, this contradicts that. Especially when gambling addiction is a massive issue in West Sydney.

What your not getting is that WSW is not exactly a club that would struggle for corporate support, they have mainstream appeal and would easily be able to find another sponsor that doesn't ruin peoples lives.

Those who oppose gambling should shun fast food sponsors, alcohol as well.

i could make the argument that the designer milkshakes should be banned because of the shitload of sugar inside them.

people should be able to enjoy them in moderation
