@BA81
Even if the AFL and A-League don't release clubs ip they should at least do a swap. WSW for Collingwood. Transform GWS into WSW and enter Collingwood into the A-League.

The Aussie Rules leagues I played in England only allowed 3 Aussies per team on the field at any time for 9 a-side and 4 for 18 a-side. In Spain there were only 6 clubs but most had only 1 or 2 Aussies. Some had none.

The NRL has NRLtouch with 600k+ participants. Football has Futsall with god knows how many participants 1m+
The AFL is playing catchup in this area and its 9's version is not cutting it.
Thats my theory anyways. :D

Collingwood already tried the NSL ...As part of a mongrel-outfit with the Bergers @ a time when there was no pressing incentive for AFL/NRL clubs to be involved in our game (AUS still in Oceania w/no international club competition/s to aspire to, semi-professional NSL out of sight & mind of Oz public-consciousness, said comp populated by mono-ethnic clubs next to disinterested in embracing the wider community, etc.) That whole shebang of Collingwood Warriors/Carlton SC/Parramatta Power was 15-20 years ahead of its time - that's why they failed.

Yeah whilst I am in no way pro AFL or NRL teams having teams in our leagues, you can't say that the prior experiences are anything substantial to go on.

well done to the AFL for trying some new for there game...who knows if it will work or not
why do you all care so much...if it's not the AFL, it be some other sport
FFA needs to just worry about it's self, and keep moving forward , stop worrying about what AFL

Every Sunday there is a new piece from some AFL affiliated person talking about stopping sokkah. As for 'why do you all care so much' - well if a well connected organisation with a well documented detrimental attitude towards our game is suddenly going to start trying to take the fields are games are played on, then I think it's ok for people to take at least a passing interest in.

I heard it will be with a round ball and rectangular pitch.
To emphasise kicking, you can't touch the ball as well (except for 1 player who is mean to protect the goal).

I can imagine a shortened AFL comp playing over the summer and using a venue like AAMI Park.
Would get decent ratings on Fox as well (and they might need a new summer sport if the A-League opts for Optus).

Would much rather have a club equivalent of International Rules football.
I'd support it

I still don't see how it could possibly work on a small pitch.The reason why AFL ovals are so huge is to make it harder to kick goals. Elite atheletes could easily make a mockery of a game on a small arena. The main point of difference for AFL is the big kicks.Take that away and what do you have? With cricket ,Football and NRL and rugby ,the shortened version of each game does not affect the skills required.

+xI still don't see how it could possibly work on a small pitch. It won't work. It will not take off, in fact it will not even get greenlit. I'm surprised the AFL even leaked it as a PR story - they are usually a lot better at this, it just makes them look like idiots who are not in control of their game.

The problem with this idea is who will the players be? I'm sure clubs don't want their players playing all year and risking injury.
If I was the AFL I would just base it in Melbourne with 8 clubs. Just have quadruple headers at Aami park. Should get 30k each week. 14 rounds. About 3 hours running time.

It's only 7-a-side, so it wouldn't take much to fill teams with recently retired players and VFL players who are still looking to get drafted, or even those from the U18 comp who missed out on getting drafted (about 1,500 put their name in the draft each year, but only about 80 get drafted). If they have a pre-season draft, could be a good shop window over the summer.

@oliveballs
They would have to play as AFL clubs. Therefore be contracted.
Would need s celebrity factor not draft rejects.

The thinking is pretty sound on this one: - the AFL can only have a 6 month season because it shares grounds with cricket - there is plenty of demand from patrons to see more footy - a small sided game can take account of soccer pitches over the summer, giving patrons and pat TV subscribers more footy over the summer - there isn't a lot of sporting competition over the summer, so there are sponsorship dollars to be made
