Former Australia boss Pim Verbeek has been confirmed as the new coach of the Oman national team. Source: AAP 13 DEC 2016 - 7:27 PM UPDATED 2 HOURS AGO The Dutchman - who steered the Socceroos at the 2010 FIFA World Cup - succeeds Spaniard Juan Ramon Lopez Caro, who quit last month, and will be officially unveiled to media later on Tuesday in Muscat. Verbeek, 60, arrived in Oman at the weekend to finalise the deal, flying in from Sydney, where his daughter lives. It marks a return to Asian football for Verbeek, who previously coached South Korea and was an assistant to Guus Hiddink and Dick Advocaat before succeeding the latter for that country's top job. But he is best known for his three years as Socceroos coach and, in particular, his strident criticism of the A-League. Famously, he once said that the quality of Australia's domestic league was so poor, players were better off simply training with a European club. Under Verbeek, the Socceroos qualified for the 2010 World Cup but lost all three group-stage matches amid criticism of his tactical approach and player selections. His last job was a four-year stint as technical director for the Royal Moroccan Football Federation. http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/article/2016/12/13/pim-verbeek-confirmed-new-oman-coach

Sounds like a good fit I suppose. Average coach for an average national team. At least if/when Australia next draws Oman in international football (we always seem to) we will know their game plan and style of play. Do they have a Jesus type striker in their national setup? if not they might be screwed.

Oman now has a very good coach.
Pim has received very little credit for his Socceroo team beating the biggest opponent on the biggest stage - Serbia at the 2010 World Cup.
No other Aussie coach has managed to defeat a team with such significant pedigree on the biggest stage.
No football coach with any significant coaching background questioned Pim's tactics.

+xHopfully some terrorist gets him with a car bomb. Why lol, 4 Points at the 2010 World Cup, missing out on Round of 16 due to Goal Difference which was unlucky especially the Ghana match. Pretty much flawless qualifying campaign. Probably the most chill memory I have being a fan of the Socceroos. Never was worried about our matches in Qualifying and was optimistic about our chances in a tough 2010 World Cup Group. Sure we had a good team but he did nothing bad for us.

Honestly I can understand his criticism of the A League as for a while I found the matches unwatchable, they were just painful to watch. But the standard now I know isn't great but has still improved to the extent where I'm a regular viewer and fan of the league, and I actually enjoy matches.

I think Pim is a good manager but he wasn't and will never be a good fit for Australia tbh.

Wasted Scott McDonald who could have been a gun striker for us. Never Forgive, never forget.

The treatment of him at the end of his tenure was a disgrace in Australia.

But the standard now I know isn't great but has still improved to the extent where I'm a regular viewer and fan of the league, and I actually enjoy matches. Sadly, Pim said this in a private conversation with a journalist, with the understanding it was strictly off the record. The dishonesty of some journalists is shocking. In the Middle-east he gave some of the Asian football media a hard time when they condemned the quality of the HAL during his Socceroo tenure. Oman have been a pretty reasonable team. They have been tough opponents for the Socceroos.

The Pim game plan was to have a target striker. Macca wasn't able to do it well enough. He was overpowered physically. As you suggest he was a goal poacher, second striker. Maybe he could've been used as an attacking mid for Oz? He has the skill set.

So Pim's game plans designed to win the game against Serbia, were non-existent? Is that what you believe? The Socceroos who played under him said he always had plan Plan A, B and C.

Who wrote this? Lost all three? Only their golden boy Ange has lost all three at a WC. Surely they farmed that out to a content creator in India to write.
Back to Pim - you don't know what you've got til it's gone :)

Pim's biggest problem was that he wanted to get results rather than develop the team for the future - which is perfectly logical when you consider that the FFA put him on a results-based contract. His second biggest problem was that he called a spade a spade (even if it was supposed to be off-the-record). The last thing the FFA wanted was a coach with his own thoughts - thoughts which may not have shone the best light on the domestic competition... So they made sure the FFA-friendly parts of the media would paint a negative picture of the bloke.
