Tasmania's bid for an A-League team is discussing plans to build a football-specific stadium in Hobart, Goal understands.Robert Belteky - one of the main men behind Tasmania's bid - met with Premier Will Hodgman on Thursday to discuss what the island state needs to do to be included in an expanded A-League in the 2018-19 season.Belteky - the owner of parking management group CARe Park - and fellow Victorian businessman Harry Stamoulis are the leaders of a consortium to bring the A-League to Tasmania.
Goal understands that one of the major discussion points was the need for a venue tailored towards football with Tasmania's other major venues - Blundstone Arena in Hobart and Launceston's Aurora Stadium - more suited for Australian rules and cricket. At a press conference after the meeting, Belteky was asked about stadium options fo At a press conference after the meeting, Belteky was asked about stadium options for his proposed club - an issue that is considered the major weakness of Tasmania's bid. Belteky believes that Football Federation Australia's criteria for expansion, which are set to be released before July, will be focused around three pillars: financial backing, overall benefit to the A-League and stadia. "Tasmania needs a rectangular stadium," he said. Belteky added that any future stadium would need to be adaptable for concerts and other sports, while he also confirmed that the bid's working name for their club is FC Tasmania although he insisted that could be changed. FFA wants to increase the A-League to 12 clubs in 2018-19. In November, Belteky and Stamoulis became the first bidders to officially meet with the governing body. Clubs that have already indicated their interest in joining an expanded A-League include South Melbourne, Brisbane Strikers, Wollongong Wolves and Adelaide City, while areas such as southern Sydney, Geelong and the western corridor of Brisbane have long been touted as options.

Back on topic.
Interesting to see Tas perhaps finally acknowledging that they will need a football specific stadium if there is any chance of them getting selected. Perhaps until a new stadium agreement is in place they will be missing out on the next round of expansion.
Id say Geelong and Sth Sydney still firm favourites unless a second Brisbane team comes in.

Besides the Melbourne TV audience, Geelong really doesn't offer that much more than Tasmania in reality.
It will prob look worse on TV with a future 40k stadium after the 5th stage of redevelopment

That's been my argument whenever Geelong is brought up. Other than being in the Melbourne tv region they offer no more than Tassie or any other regional bid would. And in reality Foxtels priority is subscribers over ratings.
Really hope the bid puts the screws on the government - you Think you deserve a team as much as you say then prove it. Don't use us an excuse to milk grant money out of Turnbull to upgrade an oval venue.
Rectangular or nothing.

You are right in saying that Fox's major concern is subscribers but with 500k subscribers in Melbourne and an annual churn of just over 10% the extra content of special interest to Melburnians is much more valuable to them than content of special interest to Tasmanians where there are only 40k subscribers. They have to replace more subscribers in Melbourne annually than the numbers of subscribers in Tasmania.

Just take a look at what happened during Victory's game at Geelong a few weeks ago when Victory supporters bood Geelong Cat's ex player. Same type of mentality is my guess.

SO clearly it's not just City fans watching but likely to be others in Melbourne. And is it any surprise that some the more regional teams are viewed less on avg on tv?

Just put Canberra in the competition for FFS.
They have a rectangular enough stadium, capacity 25k, not too big.
They are located within driving distance of NSW clubs so they will get good home attendances from away supporters.
They have a population more than double Geelong and Hobart.
They have an existing brand and identity with the W league team
They are the nations capital, it's a disgrace NZ has their capital and ours doesn't
It's moronic that all these poxy bids like Tasmania and Geelong which dont even have proper infrastructure are being considered while Canberra is seemingly left out in the cold.

(the guy who ran the last bid has said he's not up for it again) Tasmania has two big commercial backers, local businesses who could sponsor them, and they have no rival football codes in town. Wollongong has (allegedly) got some major backing, decent boutique stadium, easy links to Sydney, and an established history in the game. Canberra has... Hellas also has a history of being a Hellenic club, rather than a south melbourne club. It plays at a poxy stadium that isnt suitable for the A league. You will struggle to get crowds of 5k, most south supporters are either dead or too frail, and their kids and grandkids are more likely to support victory and heart. Plus when you fans start ripping out the Greek flags and hellas chants any minimal mainstream support you managed to fool will abandon you in droves.
South died years ago.
