Either we do (but with no Kruse and with both wingbacks instructed to be no more aggressive than they would if they were fullbacks in Ange's back four system).
Or we go with 4-2-3-1 and the fullbacks have to sit back, almost in line with the central defenders.

+xAccording to TWG Mooy is suspended, after picking up another yellow?Ffs. Yeah I'm trying to work out how many are needed. I opened a thread as any injury or suspension typically gets one as a headline story. Abdulrahmanngot a yellow. I wonder if he is out?

I've got no confidence anymore, but a win almost secures we get to the playoffs at least.

There were distinct patches where we were outplayed in each third last night.
Too much emphasis on guys not playing in current selection. We need Sains in now and Spira back as soon as fit. Mile saved 3 balls from 6 yards in the last 5 minutes otherwise we were skun last night. This will push Milligan back into midfield where he's needed. Robbie is working hard but other short of a few moments early in the 2nd looks gassed tbh. Consider mixing up the front. Juric probably shouldhave been more clinical last night but will probably start again. Play Troisi (form is on par with Rojas and only Castro is better than those 2 this season), Play Burns( best winger in Asia) our best against Thailand, plays well with Troisi as seen in the Germany game. Consider giving McGree a run (probably no worse than Robbie). Consider Smithy in Luongos position ( why not if Milligan and Mile behind him) Timmy stay bench unless things are drastic in the last 10 minutes.

I'd say he needs to stick to a formation and work with that ... the constant chopping is not needed. Ange talks about playing our style no matter the opposition, continually changing the formation to me suggests he is tweaking the tactic for each and every match (not playing one style).
The Asian Cup shows we have the cattle in Asia, we just need to play players in their natural positions and a formation that most play week in week out (I'd say none of the players have played in that formation against Iraq ever before (probably across their whole career) ... and he had what 2 days too enact that system??? Planning to fail really).

Constantly tweaking? He has never changed this damn formation till just now where we still play the same way in pressing and possession.

We've played the diamond about twice in Ange's entire tenure, we've played the 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 in almost every match for his entire time as manager.

During the Asian Cup he played a very similar formation every game, since then it's anyone's guess what formation he'll use on game day. He does have two or three favourites, but he constantly changes this from one game to the next. He doesn't have the team enough to do this ... he needs to stick to a formation that works (or he can make work) for the benefit of the players.

Do you actually read aussiesabroad thread? There's a core group of poster on here who can recite almost to the exact minute the time Aussies spend on the pitch.

Should be a pretty comfortable win, Middle Eastern teams are rubbish away from home. 2 or 3-0. UAE did win in Japan but that only happened due to a monumental fvck up by the ref which should've given Japan a 2-0 lead.

If it has a flat back four (better still in 4-2-3-1) that's very defensively sound. But Angeball really does rely on the overlapping wingbacks. The problem is to have just the one screening CDM and overlapping fullbacks results in there being even more space in defence for the central defenders to cover than we saw in Tehran. Somehow those hatches need to be battened down.

There is nothing wrong with overlapping fullbacks, but for me I only like one going forward, whilst one stays relatively reserved (depending on the side of the field the ball is being played down), or a DM could drop back virtually making it a back three if you like.

If we play with the same formation then Smith has to play LWB, it is a role he seems very well suited to playing. It is not great that he is not playing much for Bournemouth but he is all we have seeing Gersbach was stupidly not selected. However we have no one capable of playing RWB at a good standard in the squad so it will have to be Leckie at RWB. Not ideal. Wright must play CB and I would put Sainsbury in as well with Jedinak playing in between them. Risky seeing Sainsbury has not been playing and Jedinak has limited CB experience and that might be exposed.
With Mooy suspended and Luongo not playing well for the Socceroos any more the midfield is an issue. Irvine must play and if Jeggo had not been injured it might have been the right time to give him a debut. Troisi has to come in a play as the number 10 in behind Juric. Amini might get his debut unless Ange loves McGree and gives him a shot.
..............................Langerak .................Sainsbury - Jedinak - Wright Leckie.......................................................Smith ..................Irvine - Milligan - Amini ................................Troisi .................................Juric

I realise a friendly takes out the energy, but -- given how we're playing so badly -- perhaps a friendly would have been a good try-out for the 2nd tier squad members to see if any warranted a place. In hindsight, it was stupid to try out such a radically different formation in a crucial game. Surely such experiments should be left to friendlies. When was our last friendly? I read that Iran wanted to play us in a friendly? Why didn't FFA go with that?
