Football fans around the country flocked to their televisions Wednesday night to catch A-League champions Sydney FC play Liverpool only to find some of the most cringe-worthy pre-match presenting seen in sporting history. Presenters Jules Schiller, Tegan Higginbotham and Steen Raskopoulos took viewers on a memorable (or forgettable?) half-hour of TV before the match. The sky box, usually kitted out with modern technology such as touch screens and tablets, was instead equipped with two sturdy whiteboards with cut-out faces to depict each side’s line-up. Schiller, Higginbotham and Raskopoulos presented an energetic preview of the match ahead, mispronouncing Liverpool striker Milan Baros’ name as “Milos Baros” and pulling together a skit where they all texted former Soccerroo Harry Kewell asking him a variety of questions. “I guarantee he will write back,” Higginbotham said after texting the 38-year-old “you called, who is dis?” Higginbotham revealed she didn’t get a response from Kewell, but was told by her mum she had lipstick on her teeth for the entire pre-game coverage. Fans exploded on Twitter, slamming the network for “wasting their taxes” on the disappointing hosts. Some even went as far as labelling them the “worst football hosts in history”. Fans also questioned why the network didn’t enlist popular football show presenters Santo, Sam and Ed — best known for their stellar coverage of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa in their show Cup Fever. -PB

Clearly expansion is now off the agenda - there just aren't enough football hosts to go around. FFA called one right ffs

The best way it seems to present this is the manner which foz, zelic and the rest of the sbs presenters do In a serious manner with a few jokes here and there but more so just analysis of the game, such as thoughts on why managaers have decided to do this or highlighting the importance of the game Its simple just talk football

Basheer is so bad I stream rather than watching the free coverage (or watch it on silent) because I have trouble staying awake during his commentary

I muted it before the match started. At halftime it got even worse, they got some Asian work experience kid from a sheltered workshop who could barely even speak. I am not exaggerating, he could barely speak. That was shit, pure and utter shit.

I don't give a fuck if it is a character, no other sport gets that shit treatment. That was fucking rubbish, kill the lot of them. Was that grey haired wanker from the B-League? They have Santo, Sam and Ed on their payroll and offer up this crap?

One of the real draw-backs was the ONE guy who was an old football pro and go-to there, Paul Wade. Wade tends to be out of the media loop these days and I suspect it's because, as we saw tonight - he can be soo negative and lacking insight and constructive feedback. More cheer-leading Liverpool and bemoaning/downgrading the A-League/Aussie talent without any redemption. Both are somewhat understandable in modicum, a dose of realism, but he tends to offer soo little in terms of being constructive and positives, positive lessons to look towards heading into the future. We learn nothing from him. Where as, as you guys have compared - SBS will have Zdrilla, Foster, Lucy Zelic and co, giving the game some respect and even in imbalanced affairs, they will provide some constructive analysis and perspective with the wider game and context in that perspective.
Foster and co tonight would have highlighted what they and we can learn from such a stage and a more Australian-centric focus, as to what Sydney FC will face next season with the Asian Champions League and their need to be utilising a wider squad with some of these talents. They would have highlighted that Grant and Vukovic had just been selected in Ange's Socceroos Squad too and too when those matches will be. The commentators DID touch on some of these things, but as an after-thought amongst all the Liverpool-centric observations and cheerleading. And when they cut to Wadey later, post-match, he signed off on another negative and un-constructive note.
I think even 'import', Michael Bridges, would be a far better representative and like folks have said, his input has been good and balanced in these sorts of games, in the telecasts on Ch7 and the other Commercial FTA networks. They probably couldn't afford him though or he's contracted elsewhere - but surely there's some other former EPL/UK League player or Socceroo they could've called along, like Muscy, Zdrilla, Paul Okon or somebody?! Steve Corica would be good, but he was on the coaching staff. Heck, if they found Nick Rizzo to provide the commentary, that would've been quite the novelty!

Have Chen on the side-line and Nick Rizzo in the commentary box! :D

TBH I think that IS what just happened. It was a bit of a half-arsed joke, somewhat knowingly but it was too light on the balance of having football expertise and the commentators were dead awful too and contributed to the problems we have here, to cut-through and appeal to the wider fans of the code, who may not yet be giving the A-League and Aussie football a fair chance. Even Craig Johnston might have been, dare I say, an improvement? He's commentated for these kinds of games before and drawn some attention for it too, for better or worse.

ABC deserves to get rightly slammed for the coverage they put out today. I have been watching football for about 40 years and this would have to be the worst coverage I have ever seen. Considering I have been through some pretty awful times with football that is saying something. If anyone can name a more cringeworthy telecast I want to hear it.

For all the work football is trying to do in making getting this sport mainstream, that was just a slap in the face to our sport! Shame to be an Aussie after that.
