Runner allegedly assaulted at junior footy match in Heidelberg

AFL premiership player Glenn Archer has denied assaulting a runner during a scuffle at a junior match in Heidelberg over the weekend. The AFL great admits being involved in a scuffle at the match on Beverley Road yesterday, but says he did not punch anyone.Archer told SEN he jumped the fence after another incident in which he alleges a boy was hit.He alleged the runner later confronted him.DO YOU KNOW MORE? EMAIL: news@heraldsun.com.auArcher said the runner got in his personal space and he pushed him off.“Their runner is screaming at me, yelling, swearing I can’t remember exactly what he was saying,” he said.“I walk close to the fence to let him know, because he hasn’t got the context of what happened (in the earlier incident).“He stuck his finger in my face, didn’t hit me in the face, just really pointing the finger.“He gets in my personal space, I push him off and then it’s just a screaming match.”Archer says he then left the game to diffuse the situation. The AFL Hall of Fame member admits he should not have jumped the fence.Archer, who is a North Melbourne board member, says he is unsure how the club will react to the incident. The Herald Sun has contacted North Melbourne for comment.Police are investigating and say a man allegedly assaulted the runner shortly before 4pm yesterday at the game. The alleged offender left before police arrived.Police spokeswoman Belinda Batty said reports had been taken and the alleged assault is being investigated.Archer says he has not been contacted by police.

Former AFL diversity manager Ali Fahour charged by police with assault over alleged on-field punch

  • Tom Cowie, Jon Pierik
Former AFL executive Ali Fahour has been charged by police over an alleged on-field punch that resulted in him being banned from football for life.Fahour has been charged on summons with intentionally cause injury, recklessly cause injury and unlawful assault following the incident in a suburban match in Whittlesea last Saturday.
The offences carry a potential jail term. The Northern Football League handed Fahour, 35, a lifetime ban over the incident. He also resigned from his job as AFL diversity manager.

Whittlesea player Dale Saddington was allegedly knocked out by Fahour during a melee that erupted in the third quarter in the match against West Preston on Saturday.Footage emerged of the incident, which was subsequently referred to the northern league's tribunal. Fahour was slapped with a 14-week ban, which exceeded the threshold for a lifetime ban from football. An emotional Fahour told media after the two-and-a-half hour hearing that he would seek professional help for his behaviour. He has also apologised to Saddington and his family and expressed regret for his actions. Northern Football League chief executive Peter McDougall said after the hearing the league wanted to take a stand on violence. "The league does not condone any acts of violence on or off the field," he said. "Fahour's career suspensions tally now totals 21 matches, therefore this now activates the AFL de-registration policy."Among the most high profile on-field cases to be referred to police involved football great Leigh Matthews. Then the Hawthorn captain, Matthews was deregistered for four matches after he broke the jaw of Geelong's Neville Bruns in an off-the-ball incident in 1985 at Princes Park.No report was initially lodged, but television replays pressured the VFL into charging Matthews with "conduct unbecoming".This meant it could not be heard by the tribunal, so Matthews appeared before the VFL Commission. The incident was the catalyst for trial by videos.Just days after Matthews appeared before the commission, Victoria Police charged him with "assault causing grievous bodily harm", with the case to be heard in the Melbourne Magistrates Court. Matthews was initially convicted and fined $1000, but the conviction was overturned on appeal and he was granted a 12-month good behaviour bond.Fahour is due to face Heidelberg Magistrates Court on October 1.
