VETERAN Italian striker Massimo Maccarone has joined Brisbane Roar.

The Roar are yet to confirm the signing, but 37-year-old marksman has agreed to terms on what’s understood to be a marquee deal.Maccarone’s most recent club was Italian second division side Empoli, with his previous teams including Sampdoria, Siena and Middlesbrough.

Empoli website empolichannel.it announced that Maccarone, capped twice for the Italian national team, was “preparing to sign” with the Roar.

Only last week there had been suggestions Maccarone was on his way to Perth.

Maccarone will replace departed attacker Jamie Maclaren, now with German second division club Darmstadt.

I'd call him the Roar's Zlatan but Zlatan is Man U's Maccarone. 

So Roar have three to choose from at No. 9: Maccarone, D'Aggers and Gomerio with Hooi inbound as Borrellos replacement. I ain't complaining 👍

He turns 38 (in early September) before the season starts. He's no Del Piero.

Is Suncorp able to provide wheelchair access?

As a genuine #9 he may be more effective than ADP was... 

IIRC he was the first (and only?) player to ever be picked for the national squad whilst playing in Serie B.

That is what i find a little upsetting. signing a 36+ year old has to be someone a special like a del pierro. Not a mid tier european player. Little dissapointed in this. 

Could be great, but just wont have the legs to press upfront. Will most likely be a hold up man so the two wingers have to be providing a lot. Also makes the roar line up WAY to old. with FKB, mckay, holman, kristensen, north, pappa and theo plus this guy gives us 7 to 8/11 starting players over 30, depending if devere plays. That is not a good age for a high pressing side.

We have regressed significantly as a league.

He played for both Empoli and Parma at the same times as Vince Grella. Last I heard, Grella is now working as a player agent in Italy.

so they have a pretty strong squad. Getting an old fella is probably good for D'aggers

As long as he bangs them in the back of the net,  I couldn't give a shit if hes 37 going 38 by the time the season starts. Going by the videos I have seen he does look good, but like any player coming to the A-League only time will tell if he turns out to be a good signing or not. 

Roar had been pumping it long to Jmac for a long time, so nothing new if it continues with this guy though I think it may different as he looks like he can hold up the ball which is where Jmac was lacking. 

Personally I feel that someone would have had to have scored more than 5 A-league goals (with some of them coming from ST) to be classified as one of the best scoring wingers in the competition.

Broich should have been kept but not for his goal scoring, he would always seem to pass more than shoot. 

How did his operation go? that seems to have been a big factor in Roar letting him go.

I don't know what playing style Aloisi has in mind ,but longballs will be of little use without some pace and energy up front.Maybe we are going to play like SFC.

I don't get this. 7 goals from 29 in all comps last season and Brisbane are willing to fork out marquee money on him. He was good a long...long time ago.

2 of those goals were in Copa against Vicenza who finished 20th in Serie B and were relagated.

Broich hasn't had his operation, nor been snapped up by any other A league club. More likely to be coaching next year than playing ..

a good signing if he was under the cap but as a marquee it just goes to show what's lame with the marquee concept. Scrap the cap and let clubs pay players what they like, marquee status comes with pressure that isn't always warranted

38 year old former Italian international out of the NT for 15 years after a career of 2 internationals, signed for 2 years is a marquee.

33 year old former Italian international out of the NT for 3 years after a 17 game international career, signed for one year, not a marquee.

Sign the poorer player for a longer period to be a marquee. Gotta love those criteria from the bureaucrats.
