Good start from Australia but Bangladesh fighting back.

First time since 1978 Australia has gone into a test match with only one paceman

Lyon opening the attack worked, he got 4 wickets fairly quickly but Agar only has 1 wicket and O'Keefe none.

Cartwright is there for some extra pace bowling. I'm glad they picked him.

Interesting that they dropped Khawaja, they obviously have no faith in him in subcontinental conditions.

Good for Lyon.

At stumps  Bangladesh is 6-255.

They recovered well after being about 4-80.

Lyon is now Australia's 7th highest wicket taker with 5 wickets. He took the first four wickets  of the innings with four successive LBWs. The second needed an Oz instigated replay to be awarded.

Thought O'Keefe bowled well early without luck. Lyon has really improved in subcontinental conditions these days. He seemed to get the ball to skid off the pitch for those four LBWs in succession, or was it top spin? I know how to bowl a wrist spin top spinner, but I'm not sure if one can bowl a top spinner with a finger spin action?

You can bowl the top spinner using the offspinners grip. Usually you have to bowl with a very high arm action, turn your wrist sideways (Sean facing forwards down the pitch) and flick the ball out the front over your middle finger.

Lyon has learned to do this pretty well now. His flatter and faster trajectory is working wonders in the subcontinent.

It seems like Lyon is also varying his pace more. At times, when he wanted to, he got some nice loop yesterday. O'Keefe forced a few edges and a lot of mishits in his first few overs when the ball was new. I thought he was getting a bit of drift. I didn't see the last 90 minutes of play last night, so I'm not sure how the last session panned out. I would've liked to see us take more wickets in the last session.

This series has shown Bangladesh has improved out of sight, particularly in subcontinental conditions. Most Australians won't see that Bangladesh are not too bad, because they don't have pay TV. Many pay TV subscribers don't like cricket either.

The Bangladesh first innings has ended at all out for 305.

Unfortunately, Bangladesh recovered well after being 4-80. I thought the Aussie induced a lot of edges and forced frequent mishits for little luck. I'm worried about Australia's ability to make 305.

I'm assuming Cartwright being a West Aussie will be a good hooker and puller against pace - not what is needed for this wicket.

Cartwright is a strong off side player off both front and back foot. Particularly strong on the cut shot. Doesn't mind using his feet against spin so we'll see how he goes.

Fantastic bowling by Lyon to get 7 wickets. He really is a fantastic bowler.

In amongst the bad news in football, this Test has been a pleasant surprise in the last one and a half sessions or so I missed. Didn't watch from  about 60 runs into the Aussie innings. They must be about 2-225.

At last Smith stood up - to an extent. He didn't go on.

The only two established batters in our team with experience are Smith and Warner. They led from the front yesterday. Renshaw was unlucky to be dismissed, but the Bangla keeper took a magnificent leg side catch.

i think it takes 20 or so games to get used to conditions in asia and you are lucky to get that over your career. Warner has threatened from time to time to come good in asia. Back to back centuries (if he got there? Did he?) is nothing to be sneezed at even against bangladesh

Australia really stuffed up with Handscomb running himself out. Unfortunately, I saw none of his innings as I switched on for his run out! Australia scored few runs for the loss of many wickets after his dismissal. Cartwright looked good, until he got out. Maxwell looked shaky at the start of his innings. Wade was a bit lucky with some of his unorthodox shots.

Cartwright hit one magnificent onside 6 over long on by using his feet effectively against spin.

Unfortunately, he wasn't there long enough.

His 120-125kph medium pace bowling looks too innocuous for a bona fide Test all rounder.

Bangla 5-39 still 33 runs in the second dig behind Australia's first innings total. 

Cummins and O'Keefe have 1 and Lyon has 3. Even O'Keefe has extracted prodigious turn. Lyon is on fire! He is getting serious turn, loop and drift. This guy looks to be bowling  as well as Warne and MacGill at their most potent ATM. He has 19 wickets for the series after just a few overs into the second innings of the second test. Cummins' spell was ferocious with the new ball.

My worry is Australia chasing down any total. Without Warner or Smith at the crease, few others can control an innings. Handscomb and Renshaw can play good supporting roles to either Warner or Smith, but chasing under pressure, the rest will fold like a pack of cards under sustained pressure. Maxwell, Cartwright, Wade, Agar and Cummins can play decent innings as frontrunners, if they are the first team to bat, but they don't have the subcontinental savvy, experience and smarts needed to chase down totals under pressure.

We really do lack another good spinner to compliment Lyon in the sub continent. Okeefe is good on his day but is far too inconsistent.

Again Lyon has taken 6 wickets. Gee, he has bowled well.

Bangladesh all out for 157.

Australia needs 85 to win.

Cummins bowled some spiteful stuff on a dead pitch. Poms look out!  He has the speed of Starc, he has more power in hitting the pitch very hard, and closer to the accuracy and consistency of Hazlewood. He bowls intelligently too. From this tour he is now the number one Aussie pace bowler.

If Bangla dismiss Smith and Warner early, they have a chance of winning this match even if only chasing 85 runs.

6 wickets for Lyon now!

O'Keefe has looked threatening when the ball is newer.

He looked innocuous in the UAE against Pakistan, but was quite effective against India. At times he imparts little spin.

And there's the win! We chased that 87 runs three down, but a wins a win.

Nathan Lyon the GOAT takes 13/154 for the match. That's the best figures by an Australian spin bowler in Asia. He also took 22 wickets for the series. That average is falling quickly.

Well done to Warner for fixing up his batting in the subcontinent. Two hundreds in these conditions is a solid effort.

With Smith and Warner back in the pavilion at 30 odd, I thought it could've been dicey. Thankfully Handscomb and Maxwell scored the runs quickly. Handscomb's footwork looks good - suitable for further success on the subcontinent. Maxwell was in his element in the  small chase, hitting  a 6 to win the game. Usman struggles on the subcontinent, but  should still start in Australia where he has been consistent of late on bouncier wickets.

Credit to Lyon for improving so much on the subcontinent with 22 wickets in 2 tests. Also, Warner has improved to score 2 centuries in 2 tests. Smith looked good but lost concentration after some confident starts. Renshaw was steady. The rest of the batting was inconsistent, inexperienced  and fragile.

Australia relied heavily on Lyon to take 22 odd of the all wickets taken in the 4 innings. Cummins bowled plenty of accurate, venomous thunderbolts in support. The rest of the bowlers, O'Keefe, Agar, Maxwell and Cartwright were steady at best. Hazlewood bowled well at times without luck in the first test. One other thing of note was Wade's improved keeping in Chittagong. There were far less byes. Wade made sone terrific stumpings and took some good catches.

hopefully lyons lessons in india can translate to better 5th day bowling in australia which I have always seen as his biggest weakness

After seeing how the highly rated sub continent spinners do in Australia all days i think Lyon is just as threatening on the 5th day if not more so.

Bowling spin in Australia is hard and Lyon does it better than most. I think he gets a bit of a bad rap in this regard - Adelaide and Sydney are good for spin on day 4 and 5, but most of the other pitches are not particularly good or bad.

Good fast bowling is just as likely as spin to get wickets on day 5 at the Gabba, MCG or WACA.

Lyon now has a test bowling average of 31, but a first class bowling average of 35. That shows you just how much harder bowling is on flat tracks in Australia even in the Sheffield Shield.
