Ryan's Brighton chances take Krul twist
Source: SBS The World Game
21 SEP 2017 - 6:00 AM  UPDATED 5 HOURS AGO

Socceroos shot stopper Mat Ryan's position as Brighton's first choice goalkeeper could be in doubt after the Premier League club penned Netherlands international Tim Krul to a permanent deal. Krul moved to the Amex Stadium on a season-long loan deal on deadline day and made his Seagulls debut in Tuesday's extra-time defeat to Bournemouth in the EFL Cup. Though the Dutchman has had to play second fiddle to Ryan thus far, he has penned a permanent deal until the end of the season. Ryan has had a mixed start to his time at Brighton, after the newly promoted club signed the Australian for a club record fee of A$9 million from La Liga side Valencia.

Krul's one-year deal is sure to be a major concern for Ryan, who made the move to Brighton in search of guaranteed minutes after being forced to play play second fiddle to Brazil custodian Diego Alves at Valencia. The announcement is also bad news for Ange Postecoglou and the Socceroos, who will be desperate for Ryan to be in peak form ahead of crunch World Cup qualifiers against Syria next month. The Netherlands keeper has featured sparsely since suffering a serious knee injury on international duty, but made 18 appearances for AZ in the Eredivisie last season. He is expected to start for Brighton in their Premier League clash against Newcastle on Monday (AEST).

Concerning if Ryan drops to no.2, that would leave both of the Roos' first choice keepers warming the bench coming into some of the most important WC qualifying games in 12 years. I'd say bring in Vuka and Jones given they're actually playing, but we know Ange prefers to start players that spend more time warming the bench for their clubs than actually on the pitch.

Since Jones seems to be AWOL, guess that makes Vukas chances very good suddenly.

Then again, Ange has form picking players that arent playing

Birighitti might be a chance as well, he might even be selected ahead of Vukovic in the 23 man squad behind Ryan and Langerak this time.

Krul is a pretty good shot stopper but we will soon see where the problems lie, its not always the goalkeepers. Its with a leaky defence.

Would be awful for Ryan. He needs to lift his game bigtime. Everytime he gets a shot he underwhelms.
Birrighitti is playing reserves against nobodies. He shouldn't be remotely close to a national team callup. Not even in the top 10 GKs we have.
