Gee Kerr is good, can head, can turn, can pass and shoot with both feet.

Poor De Vanna can't buy a goal tonight.

Pretty amazing stat here.

https://www.foxsports.com.au/football/matildas/the-unheralded-matildas-set-to-shine-at-asian-cup-chloe-logarzo-aivi-luik-larissa-crummer/news-story/f372ae4622c9f0854b16364d2fd8b4cb

In the 2018 Algarve Cup, Logarzo covered over 48km across four full games of football.

To compare, Liverpool’s hard-running midfielder Jordan Henderson averaged 11.92km per game early in the 2016/17 Premier League season and 10.88km in his busy 2013/14 season.

It’s a statistic that is testament to Logarzo’s workrate and running ability.

Australia's inability to break down a deep block defence (park the bus) has shown again.

I've seen it with the youth teams and Socceroos too when there is space to play we are fine but when they cant find solutions with limited spaces to play we struggled a lot and get frustrated with the time-wasting that goes with it.

The Portugal game was a great example too, it's something we have to improve on if we want to reach the next level.

Can anyone explain how 5th place will work in the 2 groups?

Top 2 from both and then what?

Given it's likely to be a goalfest in the other group are we danger of missing out if we finish 3rd in our group?

Um, top two to the semis and to the world cup.

The third place from each group just play-off for 5th place.

How hard is that?

Matildas won 8:0 vs Vietnam. South Korea held Japan to a 0:0 draw. This complicates things a bit

Currently it's Australia and Japan on 4 each. South Korea has 2 points and should beat Vietnam giving them 5. Tie breaker is head to head.

  1. Points in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
  2. Goal difference in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
  3. Goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
  4. If more than two teams are tied, and after applying all head-to-head criteria above, a subset of teams are still tied, all head-to-head criteria above are reapplied exclusively to this subset of teams;
  5. Goal difference in all group matches;
  6. Goals scored in all group matches;
  7. Penalty shoot-out if only two teams are tied and they met in the last round of the group;
  8. Disciplinary points (yellow card = 1 point, red card as a result of two yellow cards = 3 points, direct red card = 3 points, yellow card followed by direct red card = 4 points);
  9. Drawing of lots.

I don't understand. Wouldn't tie breaker criteria 2 and 3 be automatically redundant if Japan and Australia drew? Therefore automatically going to complete goal difference.

Criteria 2 and 3 only appears to work of teams play twice like in the champions league.

http://www.news.com.au/sport/football/australia-issue-warning-to-japan-after-thumping-vietnam-in-asian-cup/news-story/e3f25af8cf5830f860ccec8778034ac4

Australia now tops Group B with four points — equal with Japan — but with a four goal better goal difference.

Australia’s huge win has eliminated any chance of the Matildas being ousted by a head-to-head record with the Japanese if the two nations happen to be tied on points at the end of the group stage after Japan beat Vietnam 4-0 last weekend.

With Japan held goalless by a well organised South Korean side in the earlier Group B clash, a draw is now good enough for Australia to oust Japan out of the last four of the Asian Cup — providing Vietnam doesn’t cause an upset by beating South Korea in its final match.

A Matildas win will clinch top spot and avoid a meeting with Group A leader China in the semi final.

A Matildas loss however can throw everything into chaos.

In this case yes. They can apply if there are more than two teams tied.

Still very high chance either Japan or us won't be going to the world cup. That's a scary thought. Well done S.Korea on getting their tactics right.

Don't forget about the 5th place play-off for a WC berth. Which ever team finishes in 3rd in Group B should have no trouble beating Thailand or Philippines for the last WC spot.

Japan leading 1:0. South Korea up 4:0 vs Vietnam. As it stands we will have a 5th placed playoff against the Philippines for World cup qualification.
