Whilst complaining about venues is nothing new, this rivalry was built on days of madness at Hindmarsh at the start of the A-League. Unlike other rivalry games at the SFS, Olympic Park or Etihad where there is massive separation between home fans, away fans and the pitch, Hindmarsh was the one where they are all thrown in on top of each other.

The chaos in the overfilled bays, over the fence celebrations with players and the shit banter thrown between fans made this game one for the fans.

Adelaide Oval genuinely ruins everything about this fixture.

Yeah I refuse to go to this, done with watching football at Adelaide Oval for games like this. It is great when its an Australia game or a final where you get 35K+ but anything less the stadium sucks for football. I think the crowd will be sub 20K, they'll be lucky if it is a crowd above the capacity of Hindmarsh.

Speaking as a Victory fan, I believe that Adelaide vs Victory at Hindmarsh has the best sporting atmosphere across any code in the country. Taking it to dire ovals just ruins it.

definitely one of the best games on the sporting calendar in any sport. still going, even though I'm pissed off it is a AO.

I think we'll win. excluding the recent FFA cup loss, we haven't lost over there in a while. and we're under the pump a bit, so we will find a way.

Didnt go due to the venue.  Love games at hindmarsh... adelaide oval is the worst.

Adelaide should win easy. Big mistake to not pick up at least 1 full back. With geria going backwards, its a massive weakness. Plus the bullshit start of playing your 3 biggest rivals first up makes it tough to build any momentum for the season.

Coopers Stadiums as an away fan is awesome.
The stadium is rocking, the view is great and your right in front of the action.
The opposition fans are hostile and the game itself is heated.

Would’ve gone if it was at Coopers but was deflated to see it at AO which will provide the opposite.
Not worth the travel when you will barely be able to see the match.

Just sucks we don’t play another fixture at Coopers later in the season!

Nope, that is only for finals games we are forced into AO. We have a deal in place where we play a Victory game a season and major finals at AO, we are in the final year of this deal.

I find it funny how in Gombau's last season when we played Brisbane at AO and everyone was complaining to the FFA Griffin was like 'it isn't our fault, we'd like to be at Hindmarsh' yet when its up to him we play it at the cricket ground.

Far out, that's disappointing

Heres some reading from 2015

Adelaide United to continue at Adelaide Oval despite meagre crowd for Victory draw

ADELAIDE United chairman Greg Griffin says the Reds will continue to play games at Adelaide Oval despite a record low Reds A-League crowd of 19,079 fans turning up on Friday.

Griffin says Adelaide Oval is a great venue for soccer matches.

“If we ever host a final it will be there,’’ Griffin said.

“If the Socceroos ever play a serious opponent like Japan or the US or England it will be at Adelaide Oval.

“It is a world-class venue for soccer. Just because it’s not Coopers it doesn’t mean it’s not a great stadium.”

But Griffin claims an agreement between Adelaide Oval’s Stadium Management Authority and Football Federation Australia forced the Reds to play its round one clash against arch rival Melbourne Victory which ended in a scoreless draw.

Many Adelaide United’s fans reacted with venom to the club hosting its match at Adelaide Oval.

The club’s official Facebook page was hammered by a plethora of angry fans who pleaded for the club never to play a Reds match at Adelaide Oval again.

Griffin acknowledged the fans angst but believes the timing of the Reds opening match of the season probably cost the club a decent sized crowd and a hefty profit.

DRAW: Reds blow chance to end Victory hoodoo

Plenty of empty seats at Adelaide Oval as the teams walked out on Friday night.

“We don’t pick these venues we didn’t pick this game on this date,’’ Griffin said.

“The venue and the date were allocated by the FFA.

“We had no say in it, we’d like to be very heavily involved if we’re doing it again and say look “we think it should be round three or round four.

“People know the A-League is on and you’ve kicked the cobwebs out, it’s simply too big a blockbuster during the first week.

“The FFA have their own separate agreement with Adelaide Oval, which is negotiated without us. There’s a contract between Adelaide Oval the SMA and FFA which we’re not a party to.

“It’s our profit and our risk.

“There are two agreements, there was an agreement months and months ago between FFA and SMA and on Wednesday I was asked to sign a match day agreement with SMA.

“I signed it at 6.30pm on the pitch on Friday night.”

Should Adelaide United continue to play games at Adelaide Oval?

An FFA spokesman said: “FFA makes the final call in relation to the Hyundai A-League fixture, but we do allow the clubs to register their preferences.

“All stakeholders were very excited about the opening round marquee game between Adelaide United and Melbourne Victory at Adelaide Oval.

“It’s a great rivalry and merits the showcase that Adelaide Oval provides.

“While everyone is disappointed with the below forecast attendance, FFA will continue with its strategy of playing marquee fixtures at major stadiums. It’s a key part of our growth strategy.”

A spokesman from SMA declared they were looking forward to hosting more soccer matches at Adelaide Oval.

“Any arrangements between Adelaide United and the FFA are a matter for them,’’ said the spokesman.

“As the venue, we’re delighted to host A-League games and other major football events and look forward to continuing to do so.”

Adelaide supporters have called on the club to avoid the Oval in future.

Friday’s crowd figure was the worst ever for an Adelaide United A-League fixture at the venue.

The Reds last season attracted an SA record for a domestic fixture when 33,126 turned up to see Adelaide and Victory before a record soccer crowd of more than 53,000 watched England’s Liverpool host the Reds.

Adelaide reportedly made $750,000 from its round two clash against Victory at the oval last year before the club was paid a $300,000 fee to face Liverpool in July.

Griffin said Friday night’s crowd would probably see the club break even for using Adelaide Oval.

But the signs were ominous when 20,155 fans watched Adelaide beat Brisbane Roar 2-1 in last season’s elimination final after former boss Josep Gombau and a plethora of Reds players all put a blowtorch to the venue before the clash was played.

And the pitch that was heavily criticised by Gombau was probably at its best for a soccer match on Friday given its in transition between the AFL and cricket season.

The cricket wicket was dropped in at midnight after Friday’s A-League clash.

Im just cranky like that.

It is a very #unique thing though that Australians follow leagues and not teams. After living in Europe I only watch my team live. I dont watch other teams in the league play each other (live or on tv).

This happens in AFL and NRL and as such A-League fans do it too. Strangley enough I watch A-League games.

No it's not! It has a cricket pitch in the middle of it, the grass is cut short for the cricket and the view is complete crap.
AO was upgraded to suit AFL and the playing surface to suit cricket - both of which are a looong way from being world games.
United played their semi against City at Hindmarsh and other than walloping them, it was very enjoyable.

The ironical thing will be that United may play Victory there next year and Griffen will say it's his idea.

Never been to Europe but would the travel times not have a bearing?  I'd rather watch some sort of football than watch the Mariners when they come to town from 1,500 kms away once maybe twice a season.

The equivalent of that would be a whole new country in Europe, in which case surely you'd just follow another team in the league.

Interesting points.  It's more the fact that football's on than anything for me.  It's not like we are spoilt for choice here.  I went to watch the Adelaide Hills Hawks and NPL games as well, but if Adelaide itself was saturated with football you're right I would probably just watch the important stuff and wait for the Mariners to come to town.

Yeah In most places you could get to various away games that are closeish depending on your location. Cheaper half the time to go to England tbh. My wife has family in Coventry so both times flying to Birmingham I have seen guys at the airport in Stockholm wearing Wolves gear on their way over. I cant remember if they were good around mid 80s or the first team shown in Sweden, but they are popular with older blokes.
