The Covert Agent: Southern Expansion make offers to buy Central Coast and Wellington Phoenix

Aspiring A-League franchise Southern Expansion has made separate offers to buy current A-League clubs Central Coast Mariners and Wellington Phoenix, but were rejected on both proposals.

The Cover Agent can reveal the Chinese investors behind Southern Expansion are tired of waiting for the FFA to figure out their expansion agenda and decided to test the resolve of two existing clubs.

The offers that were put to Mariners owner Mike Charlesworth and Phoenix chairman Rob Morrison both exceeded $7 million but were turned down after dialogue was initiated.

Southern Expansion are hoping to be the third A-League team in Sydney and cover an area south of the CBD, including St George, Sutherland and South Coast football communities.

Council approval has been obtained to build a 30,000-seat stadium in Loftus, with the franchise committing $9 million to the project in their proposal to the FFA

If they were successful in buying the Phoenix:
  • Would they had attempted to move the club to the Southern NSW region?
  • If so, would that mean no more NZ in our league?

Phoenix should take the cash and use it to set up a big bash team.

Phoenix are going to get booted eventually. Might as well get paid out by their replacement rather than wait to have their licence inevitably pulled.

FFA would never approve it. They make good business pulling licenses then reselling them. If they allowed the transfer of the license and relocation of the team they would be cutting themselves out of the moolah.

Also it's a load of crap that the stadium has been approved. Under the NSW planning system nothing is really approved until it is under construction. Compared to Vic/SA and presumably other planning systems, in NSW the proposal and approval stage are part of one big staged process. All they have is in principle support to the idea of possibly build a something.

Was rumored a couple of weeks ago, the rumor was also that the Phoenix said "no" outright.

I doubt the Phoenix are going anywhere, Rob Morrison is one of the two representatives of the A-League clubs who are negotiating with the FFA about moving forwards, it's clear that the clubs are completely behind them being in the competition.

The one thing NZ has got going for it, is its time slot suits fox sports ability to fill the early game without players cooking themselves in an Australian summer.
Anyway if a consortium is willing to spend $7m to purchase another club why don't the FFA just pull the trigger, take the $7m fee as a bond and announce them as the next franchise side ffs.

Have them based in Cronulla until they sort out the stadium situation and we're off and racing.

Phoenix only said no because the offer was to low, They wanted around $9m to $10 million for the squatters fee.

Never thought of that before. That's a good point and will likely keep Fox semi-interesting in the Phoenix staying.

Thank fuck neither of those guys accepted this ridiculous offer. Again this is just a backdoor for a chinese developer to get around australian law, this has nothing to do with football. Southern expansion is a joke of an organisation, and I hope they never get anything off the ground. The stadium proposal is one of the stupidest pieces of infrastructure I've ever seen anyone put forward. Phoenix will go eventually as well but they won't be allowed to sell their license to another party and relocate the club, the FFA will make sure they get the license fee, as they should. Generally in these licenses there are clauses which prevent owners from relocating teams anyway.

Its farcical that we have investors ready and waiting to fund a Sydney side (exactly what the FFA want) yet they can't get a licence.

Wolves too far south from their real target unfortunately which is the Hurstville area where there is a massive influx of high rises and property development.

If they cut out Wollongong from their bid, they could probably get buy in from most of the people here.

And people say the HAL is stale ?

It used to be Lowy choosing where people were allowed to have Franchises, then Fox got to pick, now it's Chinese Pollie-bribers

Never a dull moment

Closed HAL is failing with 10 teams
Closed HAL failed with 11
FFA forced to try a 12 team Closed HAL thatll just create 2 more mid table also-rans
and still this weird 16-team panacea gets trotted out.
Theres a sticky for this nonsense

I dont think Charlesworth will sell before the league is independent. It wouldnt surprise me if he is holding out to move the team to Northern Sydney.

Seeing as the team is the basis for attracting government funding of the Central Coast Mariners Centre of Excellence development he would be insane to move the team anywhere or sell the team off.

Charlesworth has also denied that there was any approach. Another swing and a miss by the covert agent.
