Star player: Christian Cuevas. Thankfully their NZ games have us some insight. So happy to face them after their long absence.

Was in Peru this year when they played their game against Colombia. Everyone said the captain Paolo Guerrero is their main man, he is so important to the team as he galvanizes the team and always scores important goals. He was decent enough to watch in the game i watched (and scored) but apparently he was not playing well that game, well the whole team wasn't because they were nervous. Good for us though is he is may not come to the WC because of doping https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-soccer-worldcup-peru-guerrero/peru-captain-guerrero-appears-before-fifa-tribunal-over-doping-test-idUKKBN1DU2R4It would be the equivalent as us going without timmy or Mile

Paulo Guerrero banned for one year after he failed a doping test. Just putting it here for relevance.

+xPaulo Guerrero banned for one year after he failed a doping test. Just putting it here for relevance. FIFA Appeal Committee reduces the sanction imposed on Paolo Guerrero to a six-month suspension(FIFA.com) On 20 December 2017, the FIFA Appeal Committee decided to partially uphold the appeal lodged by the Peruvian international player Paolo Guerrero. The decision rendered by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee on 7 December suspending the player for one year was therefore partially set aside and the initial period of ineligibility of one year imposed against the player has been reduced to six months. The FIFA Appeal Committee after taking into account all the circumstances of the case, in particular the degree of fault of the player, considered a six-month period of ineligibility to be a proportionate sanction. The player tested positive for the metabolite benzoylecgonine, a substance included in WADA’s 2017 Prohibited List under the class “S6. Stimulants”, following a doping control test conducted after the match of the preliminary competition of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ played in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on 5 October 2017. By testing positive for a prohibited substance, the player has violated article 6 of the FIFA Anti-Doping Regulations and, as such, contravened article 63 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. The suspension period starts on 3 November 2017, the date on which the player was provisionally suspended by the chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee. In line with article 29 of the FIFA Anti-Doping Regulations, the suspension covers, inter alia, all types of matches, including domestic, international, friendly and official fixtures. The terms of the decision were duly notified today.

It'll be really interesting to see how they play in Russia. Their friendly games are mostly at home. Farfan is very dangerous.
They face Scotland ,Saudi Arabia and Sweden before the tournament.

I'm surprised that they're rated as highly as they are - I reckon we're a good chance to beat them by a couple. That being said the friendlies will be very interesting, there might be something I'm missing. Scotland and Saudi Arabia are most probably not opponents who'll play anything like we will, Sweden I don't know much about but I suspect would have more similarities.

On paper they aren't noticeably better than us particularly with their best suspended
They must be a good unit
Or possibly over reliant on their best player taking performance enhancers

Parked the bus and used their physicality to scrape some results and got lucky Ecuador and Chile completely bottled it

+xNo High altitude stadiums around Moscow. Altitude is only a factor when: A high altitude dweller plays low - (slight) advantage A low altitude dweller plays high - disadvantage They will have a slight edge on us, but we're not playing them at sea level so it's no big deal. Whatever benefits offered just by altitude are covered by the fact our boy the Mooy loves punching darts. A lot of altitude training has been introduced into training programmes and they're largely an expensive waste of time. One needs to live permanently at higher altitudes to adapt. The primary benefit of expensive one month altitude camps for many sports teams is that being up in the mountains keeps their players away from hookers, blow and cameras.

Peru playing Scotland at home in half an hour, 11:00am AEST.
Our potential Round of 16 opponent Argentina is only 1-0 up at home against Haiti in the 55th minute, Messi, Di Maria, Otamendi, Higuain etc all started. Edit: Messi makes it 2-0 two minutes later. Another edit: Messi hattrick on 65 minutes.

Looking at the build-up for Peru v Scotland I'm glad the socceroos went for an early training camp rather than playing a farewell match. I don't think a farewell match would have done our players much good. First we get more time training with our new coach, second the game would have been at ANZ stadium so no atmosphere whatsoever - would've been almost a downer for the players really. Also, i don't know the stats but are Peru any good away? With this kind of home support I don't know how they'd be without it.

Goal keeping mistake, then handball in the box and penalty.
Bloke scores celebrates as if it means something - thanks god, dedicates to his baby, has a stroll around the stadium.

Scottish pundits commenting on Peru's lack of ability to break down their defence during HT.
I only tuned in at about the half hour mark but looking at the highlights it looks like the penalty shout was their best chance created so far.

2-0 via Farfan, but my stream shit itself tactically exactly when the goal was scored and again on the replay.
Replay came up. They got a close range cross in from the left after a rebound back out from a defender. Farfan found his way right between the two CBs, shot right at the keeper and it went under him. Hopefully we'd defend that much better.
