While fans still want a credible threat to Alvaro Morata, rumours are linking Chelsea with Andy Carroll. The Englishman is not the right fit for the Blues. Alvaro Morata’s recent display against Arsenal left Chelsea fans in shock. The general conclusion was that the Spaniard needs a striker who could viably threaten his starting role. The latest rumours suggest that the Blues could make a move for Andy Carroll, but the West Ham man seems a poor fit.

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea are eyeing up the big Englishman as they struggle to make progress with other targets.
[Chelsea] have asked about Andy Carroll from West Ham…Other proposed targets are proving difficult to land and initial talks have taken place with Carroll’s entourage.Despite an unfortunate stint with Liverpool, Andy Carroll remains a fine Premier League striker. However, he simply is not the type of player who could threaten Morata.

Morata is a world-class centre-forward who had an off-day against Arsenal. If he had competition, he would be under-pressure to maintain high standards throughout the season. The display at the Emirates seemed more due to a lack of concentration than anything else.
While Carroll would be useful at many Premier League clubs, Morata would not see him as true competition. Carroll’s style of play is more suited to long-ball football. Chelsea’s game has been largely high in intensity and passing. The Englishman would not be suited to making the quick runs in behind to latch onto a Eden Hazard (or Cesar Azpilicueta) pass.

The issue for Chelsea at the moment is that Michy Batshuayi seems like the perfect candidate to be a backup striker. He has both pace and strength, while he also has the flair that suits Chelsea’s theoretical philosophy.
However, Conte has placed such little faith in the Belgian that he may even leave the club in January. The Blues therefore need to bring someone in – a tough task in this transfer window.

The mid-season market is hyper-inflated and West Ham will not be letting go of Carroll cheaply. He’s the man who could save them from a relegation fight and David Moyes knows that. Chelsea will need to splash excessive amounts of cash to do this deal.
