How many sessions did they get before the tournament started? You'd think a plan to create chances could be executed by the second match, but then there was rotation.  Vietnam have no doubt been together for weeks. Rock and a hard place.

Well. There is certainly some continuity in style between the socceroos and olyroos. Lots of passing and possession but neither can break down a defensive opponent, and both look open for business at the back when the counter comes.

We need a strikers academy where every junior aged 6-18 who's ever played forward gets coached 24x7 about how to shoot, position oneself, stay on side, be selfish, shoot, finish with both feet, head the ball, shoot, volley, take penalties and shoot. 

Maybe then, one day, we'll produce a striker that can finish. 

I keep thinking back to Kossie talking with someone (maybe Zelic) on Sunday Shootout (I think) about young strikers. They joked that in their day they would stay back after training and practice shooting whereas now youngsters aren't allowed to as their "loading" is managed so tightly etc etc

I wonder if there is any truth to that (at A-League leve that is).

He discussed it last night on the A-League hour.  It raises a fair point to be fair, although technique shoot already be established by the time you're a pro whose body needs to be taken care of.

Young strikers will struggle to get games here because they cant come in already developed because there is no league that is good enough to develop in.

Blake Powell got 28 goals from 31 games in the NPL. Blackwood doesn't have his stats but it was something crazy similar in both NYL and NSWNPL. Lachlan Scott was 15 from 13 in NYL, Lokolingoy was 34 in 41 at SFC NYL.

We can produce midfeilders because they can come in and work hard/defend and develop but if a striker isn't ready then you cant really wait around for them to develop in the a-league.

It staggers me that the FFA cant see the importance of a national 2nd division for development.

Vietnam put a lot into youth at the moment. Just look at how many videos there was of this match on youtube, pushing a million views FFS. They love it.

Olyroos being left behind as Asia improves

The Olyroos need to win their final group match of the AFC U23 Championship, against South Korea on Wednesday night, to give themselves the best possible chance of reaching the knock-out stage.

It comes after Australia dominated with a whopping 75 per cent of possession but were unable to break down a five-man Vietnamese defence on Sunday night, before slumping to a 1-0 defeat.

Milicic admitted it was a disappointing result but not as surprising as some back home might think, considering the investments made by other nations in youth football - and the fact Australia has not matched them.

"I don't know where we get the expectation of easy games and just thinking that we're going to win these games at youth level," Milicic told AAP from China.

Olyroos suffer narrow loss to Vietnam in China

Australia have been stopped in their tracks by Vietnam, falling 1-0 in their second Under-23 AFC Championship outing.

"(The Vietnam team has) been together for a long time and a few years back, that same group played against Australia and won 5-1.

"I wouldn't go as far as to say our system's broken - far from it.

"However, a lot of other nations just put in a lot more into their youth programs and it's moving at a quicker rate than our development."

Milicic is adamant the answer lies in more minutes for young Australian players - at both club and international level - and more experience against different styles of opposition.

"Coming here to Asia, they're going to encounter experiences that they're not used to and many of them have not come across a team that sets up as a 5-4-1," he said.

Olyroos comfortably beat Syria

Australia have made a winning start at the under-23 Asian Championships, defeating Syria 3-1 in Kunshan, China.

"If we're going to have a serious program, we definitely have to use the FIFA windows more frequently because with the rate we're going, the exposure for these young boys isn't enough."

Australia will face an entirely different challenge against South Korea, who are a direct, physical team full of K-League regulars.

The Olyroos will be without winger Bruce Kamau (hamstring) and Milislav Popovic (ankle) and need to avoid defeat as well as hope for a favourable result in the other Group D fixture, which will be played simultaneously, to qualify for the next round.

Australia's results at the tournament will affect the team's seeding for the next AFC U23 Championship in two years, which doubles as the qualifiers for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

You do realise Ante is only interim coach and basically doing ffa a favour after Gombau left for wsw. Millicic might not even be wanted by the new Socceroos boss especially if he's a foreigner. 

If he is void of all responsibility for squad and match day selections then he shouldn't be giving all these big speeches either "WC spot on the line" "different kind of opponent" "good for development"

He should have left many players at their clubs and put in players who can play at the Olympics.

He picked a strong squad. Win the matches.

And then get smacked by South Korea who have only 3 players eligible for Tokyo 2020 because they're older and more experienced playing more minutes.

It just seems like there is an epidemic in Aus football where if everything is going your way you can take all the glory from fans but when it's not the fans can forgive you because it's not your fault.

We aren't out of the tournament yet.

I just don't like the "what? Did you expect us to win?" Because he did himself and it didn't go his way.

Quang Hai reacts after scoring a solitary goal for Vietnam.

In his message, Al Khalifa said that he was very proud of the amazing results produced by Vietnam.

He hailed the triumph as a tremendous accomplishment for Vietnamese football, whilst wishing Vietnamese football greater success in the future.

This is the second time in a row that Vietnam has been present in the continental playground for U23 teams, but the first time that the squad has tasted the flavour of victory.

Speaking after the match, Vietnam head coach, Park Hang-seo, stated he would like to dedicate the victory to all the Vietnamese people.

“We always believed we could win the game. We don’t know in advance what the result will be, but we prepared to win. Every team has good points and of course today, we were lucky,” he said.

Despite the loss, Australia coach, Ante Milicic, extended his congratulations to Vietnam on their fantastic victory.

He admitted that his team did not play well in the second half despite struggling to create some clear-cut chances.

A win of any sort regardless of Vietnam's result qualifies us.

A win with Vietnam losing or drawing against Syria puts us through in first, a win for both Australia and Vietnam means Vietnam are first on head to head.

A draw and a Syria win qualifies us in second.

A draw and a Vietnam-Syria draw and we're out on head to head regardless of group GD.

Matthew Davies was in that Malaysian team as well. I would love us to play a team which has Aussies in it.
