Maccarone is copping sh*t for two reasons, the first is some Roar fans see him as the manifestation of what’s gone wrong this season and the second, he’s coping shit for what he doesn’t or can’t do - running, pressing, closing down etc ....
What he can do, and do very well, is defend (he’s leading the way for Roar with defensive headed clearances - that’s not an accident); he can receive, hold and pass the ball under pressure (hence Aloisi has been trying him st 10), and of course he can finish.
He’s the only Roar player to have played in every game this season averaging 89 minutes/game. That’s a nice stat but he should have been rested by now only his potential replacements of Gameiro, Skapetis and D’Agastino have all been injured. Ironic that it’s the 38 year old staying injury free.
But the biggest problem with Maccarone is how he’s been used, JA knowing that he doesn’t have a mobile No. 9 has failed to create a game plan that utilises his strengths and mitigates his weaknesses (I’ve lost count the number of times we’ve lobbed the ball over his head asking him to chase Maclaren-style!!).
Anyway, the seasons nearly done for us. Attention needs to be turning to who out No. 9 will be next season
