I get the general idea among my friends that the A league isn’t really ‘cool’ to follow. I’m not sure if it’s the whole euro snob thing. It just seems odd that the participation numbers are just not watching the local game. WSW had that ‘cool’ thing going but it seems to be dying off. I remember the rbb being bursting at the seams come game day. Now it looks like a couple of hundred. I waa thinking of possibly having a trial season without the cap but only for foreigners?

We should get dance cams and fireworks when a goal is scored and everyone should actually play cricket in bright colours.

Make it a league-wide policy that every player must grow a mullet and a big 'stache before theyre allowed to play again.

Isn’t there another 8 Star Wars films we could link to? ... next season instead of rounds we could call them “episodes” and kick the season off with episode IV and Clubs could be forced to adopt a character as new club mascot. Out with Rory and Rosie and in with Jar Jar Binks, Out with giant inflatable sauce bottles and in with giant inflatable Death Stars behind each goal ... and fuck that stupid cannon when they score a goal, the Death Star can have a realistic death ray and obliterate a nearby planet every time mariners score ... which thankfully isn’t too often

Market to and engage with the million or so people involved in football and not dickhead AFL/NRL people who will never put football before theirs.

It needs to get back to something like the image for season 1. Problem is this image and fan support was built up and then when WSW joined every fan wanted our support and atmosphere to be as good as there’s. But the powers that be decided that the future was not about football fans, but about getting AFL fans to come along, so anything that might not appeal to those that like RomComs, AFL and gogglebox, was discouraged or banned..... and now we are here.

I want to see some marketing taking the piss out of the common misconceptions people have about soccer eg low scores and players diving and use it to highlight the positives about our game. Aussies love taking the piss out of ourselves

Unleash the shackles on active support and embrace its colour, noise and tribalism.
It’s the one thing this game had over any other sport in Australia which gave the game a bit of buzz in the early years and when the Wanderers came in.

It shouldn't about trying to be cool, or being the best entertainment product, or the football version of the AFL or NRL.

If the focus was just on creating an environment for the league to be the best football league that it can be then the rest will follow.

Remove goalkeepers? Remove the nets, make goals 6 points and make an extra set of posts each side thats worth 1 point?

Seriously though low scoring is part of what makes football so great. It means every score is so important and every mistake is so vital. The game changes in an instance. Give me 1-0 games over 120-100 NBA or AFL games any day.

This is half the problem. Sure it’s fine to take the piss but when it’s about trying to improve the game. It’s like everyone having a huge laugh at Sydney Fc’s loss the other night. When I lived in England. The whole country went for the English clubs in the champions league. Here in Australia fans go for the Asian clubs. Fans also laugh and take the piss when clubs are on the verge of dying. It’s like laughing when you’ve been shot in the foot.

Exactly.
I was at Hindmarsh last night with a crowd of only just over 8000. This could be built up to 12000 if the focus was put on  improving the league and not stupid gimmicks.

The BBL and WAFL are hot at the moment, but I doubt that will last too long and if the A-league is in great condition then it could benefit greatly as these two events cool off a bit.

As much as people are taking the piss on this thread- the OP has a point. But it’s not so much about making the a league cool, it’s about marketing to the strengths of the game like they did in season 1.
The Ffa should be marketing the tension, the passion, the grind, the desperation, the anguish of a last minute loss, the joy of an extra time equaliser.
Has there ever been a marketing campaign that focuses on the real fans and what the game means to them?

The number 1 thing to bring back fans is get rid of the cap and owners invest heavily in proper football players.

The recycling of average or garbage players from club to club has brought the league down to such a bad level now that it is unwatchable.

Number 2 problem is that there are not enough talented Australian players playing every week.

Sort those two problems out and watch the interest rise quickly.

The first and foremost thing is to ensure the right people are in charge of the game.

Secondly make sure there is there is a plan that focuses on our game as part of a worldwide strategy and not simply as a competitor to other codes here in Australia. That means creating a league that is strong and that will be one of the best in Asia, where our clubs are the strongest come ACL. Whether through salary cap changes or removal, increased number of teams, pro/rel the way football is shaped must reflect the big picture.

Thirdly the fans. Focus on football people. Market the game for thenhundreds of thousands of people that don't support a team yet. Bring back active support as we used to know it.

The "we are football" campaign was decent content, but was shown to be hollow when it coincided with one of the biggest crackdowns on active support that year.

It isn't making it cool, it is bringing back the fans that have been lost at this stage. The league is going backwards fast. Standard is going down, same 10 teams year in year out, lack of youth development, lack of star power, merry go round of players and coaches. The A-League has lost its soul, the FFA killed active support and that was a big factor in the league losing its buzz. From 2013-2016 the league was at its peak, but now the FFA have a real job on their hands to salvage the problem they created.

This ad was perfect. The sad thing is the agency that produced it seems to know more about footballl than the FFA does.

The offfical A-League youtube channel:

Almost none of the free highlights packages getting more then ten views. Jets v Roar didn't even get a single view.

How much are we paying Gallop and his marketing consultants again?

When does it go beyond incompetence and a joke to an actual scam?

I looked for e-league on YouTube this week and came across that site.

I was shocked as you wrote by the amount of views. Because it looks like someone has put a lot of work into it.

It also looks like they have a few abandoned channels.
