Australian actress Margot Robbie backs Mat Ryan’s Brighton to defeat Swansea

HEADING into this week’s Premier League action, Mat Ryan has received some support from an unlikely source.

Ryan’s Brighton and Hove Albion take on relegation battlers Swansea in another crucial match in their bid to stay in the top flight.

And in a segment with the BBC’s Match of the Day, where she was asked to provide her predictions for various Premier League games, leading Australian actress Margot Robbie backed Ryan’s Seagulls to get the chocolates.

“I’ll say Brighton, because of the Aussie love,” Robbie told Match of the Day.

“2-0 to Brighton.”

And understandably, Ryan was pretty happy with the backing from his fellow Australian.

“Looks like it’s my lucky day,” he tweeted.

“Thanks for the love @MargotRobbie, hope you’re right.”

In the segment, Robbie and her I, Tonya co-star Allison Janney teamed up for a number of Premier League predictions.

That included backing West Ham to upset Liverpool at Anfield.

“Liverpool ... oh okay,” she said.

“Well I go for the underdog always so I’m going to say West Ham. 1-0.”

Robbie and Janney backed Manchester United to beat Chelsea 3-2, while Janney tipped West Bromwich Albion to draw 4-4 with Huddersfield Town, backed Tottenham to beat Crystal Palace 2-0 away.

It’s not the first time Robbie’s football fandom has come to the fore, with the Australian recently revealing she supports Fulham.

“I actually haven’t been to another Fulham game for a while,” Robbie told Match of the Day.

“But I know they’re playing tomorrow against Aston Villa.”

“I’ve pledged my allegiance to Fulham so I want Fulham to win.”

The question is, why doesn't the FFA leverage celebrities like Margot Robbie (who actually like and know the game) to promote it in this country? Even if it cost $10 million, surely having a recognisable face such as Margot to promote the game would be far better value than Yoshi or 'The Chase'.

@walnuts
FFA no doubt paid expensive consultants to come up with ,The Chase,so nothing is a surprise .

She obviously has no idea about the game, as her predictions and comments clearly show. She predicts that Watford will beat Everton 4-0, and that Southampton will win 6-4 at Burnley...

Because this sort of stuff is done by the media, so in Australia they would ask her about AFL or Rugby League, or anything but reveal she has a passion for football.

Ugh... SHE HAS NO PASSION FOR FOOTBALL! Where the hell are you guys getting that from? Her boyfriend goes for Fulham so she "pledged her allegiance to them". Sounds like a real football conniseur, she does. Should definitely become the face of the a-league! Gimme a break. You people are so dense sometimes.

Still can't believe she divorced Jordan Belfort in his hour of need

He was a man of specific quirks. He believed that all meals should be earned through physical effort. He also contended, zealously like a drunk with a political point, that the third dimension would not be possible if it werent for the existence of water.

She has an interest in football, the media gets her to talk about it, that's how it works and that's how it works here for AFL and Rugby League, calm the fuck down genius.

No, that's not how it works. As part of the weekly Lawro's Predictions feature, the BBC football website gets random celebrities (many of whom have no clue about football) to predict the PL scores each weekend.  It is absolutely clear from Robbie's comments that she neither follows nor knows much about football, so it's kind of embarrassing that you guys are portraying her as some football fanatic. Maybe actually read her predictions and what she said before declaring her the next a-league mascot?

She follows Fulham, she knows when and whom they are playing against, that's enough for me or are you demanding footage of her in a balaclava and holding a flare?

Closed HAL is failing with 10 teams
Closed HAL failed with 11
FFA forced to try a 12 team Closed HAL thatll just create 2 more mid table also-rans

Even if she has only a passing interest in football, we've got to concede that's infinitely-more than the average Aussie celeb has. And given the AFL & NRL have never been shy about flaunting celeb fans (Eric Bana, Russell Crowe etc.) it's high-time we did the same where we can.

It doesn't have to be overkill or anything, but it's just about putting it out there - no harm in it.

I can see the 20 sec advertisement now.....

-Margot walks in, about to open her mouth

-Darth Maul walks in front of her, swings his light saber around a few times, he walk offs

-Margot tries to open her mouth again to talk, VAR symbol appears and she has to wait 5 secs

-Once again she tries to talk but Thwaite comes along drops his pants, walks back off screen
(By now margot is pissed)

-She finally opens her mouth to say 'Finally.....' as Muscat comes flying in, studs up and takes her knees out

-The screen blackens while you can hear Lowy and Gallop evil laugh

NRL had Russell Crowe. I guess that’s kinda different as he bought a club. When they won the premiership. Him kissing Sam Burgess on the cheek and whispering ‘you deserved this’. Is what brings fans in.

The difference between Leeds utd and Rabbitohs. Is he actually did buy the Rabbitohs. Imagine Joel Edgerton buying Perth Glory and after years they finally win the toilet Seat. Then Joel running onto the field with tears. That would be good for the game.
