With the final 26 being named for Russia 2018, and looking at how threadbare the squad is of geniune talent I am curious to know from long-time Socceroo supporters whether this is the worst squad ever assembled for a tournament [think Olympics, Confed Cups, WCQ, WC etc.]
I'd have to cast my mind back to somewhere between 1988-1992 to find a comparable squad.

I reckon it's better than 2014 and hence better than Asian Cup 2015. I also think most people would agree.

+xThis is a much better squad than 2014. Far more experience for starters, plus three players (Leckie, Mooy, Ryan) playing regulary at big league clubs vs one (Jediank). No Rogic, and Kruse last time, whilst Luongo has developed positively, especially in the last 12 months. Defence-wise we are probably in a similar boat. Only real downgrade is Cahill being four years older.

Its way better than 2014. Remember when we had like 10-15 players injured? It wasn't that long ago

As others have said, this is eons ahead of the squad from 2014, an upgrade in almost every position: > Maty Ryan has gotten better since 2014 (and hopefully wont have a shocker of a tournament this time) > We now have Sainsbury at CB who has been our most consistent performer in the past several years > Mooy and Rogic in midfield plus Luongo and Irvine in the fold > A (hopefully) fully fit Kruse and much better winger options, plus the x factor of Arzani who is one of the most technically gifted players since the golden generation

+xProbably better than 2010 as well if u just look at where the players were playing the year before Look at the players who played at the World Cup in 2010.. look at the amount of players playing at a high level. I would without question pick our 2010 squad over 2018. But I would pick 2018 over 2014. 2009-10 Schwarzer - Fulham 37 games (EPL) Cahill - Everton 33 games 8 goals (EPL) Emerton - Blackburn 24 games (EPL) Bresciano - Palermo 21 games (Serie A) which earned him a move to Lazio in the following season Wilkshire - Dynamo Moscow 32 games (Russia), including Europa and UCL action Holman - AZ(Netherlands) 30 games including Europa Kewell - Galatasary 17 games 9 goals (Turkey), 9 games 4 goals in Europa League Jedinak - Antalyaspor 28 games (Turkey) Chipperfield - Basel 26 games (Swiss), 7 games in Europa League Garcia - Hull 18 games (EPL) Grella - Blackburn 15 games (EPL) Neill - Everton 12 games (EPL) Rukavytsa - Netherlands then loan to Belgium where he scored 4 in 9 Kennedy- scoring freely in the J - League

The current squad has a better age distribution, plenty of players at, or approaching their peak.

The current squad has a better age distribution, plenty of players at, or approaching their peak. Sure, I see your point and you are not really arguing here with me but I will add that 2018 may be approaching their peak.. but they are playing at a lower level than the 2010 squad which was past it's prime and playing at a higher level. Funnily enough in terms of average age of squads, not much difference 2018 squad avg age 27.57 (26 players) 2010 squad avg age 28.43 (23 players) Agree on the distribution, but not many players in the current squad I would pick above the players I mentioned earlier. 2010 squad Distribution (23 players) 20-29 years (14 Players) 30 and over (9 Players) 35 and over (1 Player) 25 and under (5 Players) 2018 Squad Distribution (26 players) 20-29 years (19 players) 30 and over (7 Players) 35 and over (2 players) 25 and under (10 players) 2006 > day light > 2010> 2018> 2014

Let’s not judge now but after the World Cup.
It might not be the most talented roster we ever had but don’t discount them to work hard as a team to make up for it.
Mind you if Arzani is selected we would have some x-factor in this squad which wasn’t there in 2014 with him and Rogic in there, we just need to find a goal scorer and for our defence and keeper to be compatible to give us any hope of making the second round.
Have some faith

@Chondro It Depends if we can unearth another Arzani type and hope we find another talented CB like Sainsbury.
We also need to find a very good CF, maybe Folami could be that, who knows.
Overall our talent pool needs to grow as we want the current guys to be pushed for there places and therefore we will be looking good for 2022.

2014 was our worst squad, but still would have gotten a result against Holland if we had a competent keeper in goals.
Weaker group and a stronger team this time around, so hopefully we can get some points on the board.

This is definitely a stronger squad than 2014. The 2014 squad played much better than the some of the parts though.

I was listening to Ben Khalfallah speaking on FNR the other and while he agreed that Arzani was a world class talent, he mentioned that Australia really needs to be producing eight players with Arzani's talent per year. We have a long way to go before we get there.

that 2014 squad does look pretty ordinary, now that we mention it
Pretty hard to compare over the years, but it's pretty obvious that the 2006 squad was pretty good on paper, pretty much the top 12 or so players were playing in good leagues, most of them regularly, Chippers was probably at the lowest ranked league (Swiss), but at least he played regularly.
Seven or eight players were playing regularly in the Premier League, three in Serie A, one in La Liga, one in one of the top clubs in the Eredivisie, maybe a couple in the Championship, a couple in the Swiss league, three of 23 were paying A-League, but none got a run,
