LISTEN TO CRAIG JOHNSTON DISCUSS HOW A FOOTBALL BIG BASH WOULD WORK
Liverpool legend Craig Johnston has proposed the implementation of a “football big bash” to improve skills and increase interest in the sport.
Johnston believes his “digital format of the sport” appeals to a new generation of football fans immersed in the technological age.
Johnston says his format revolves around players getting as many touches as possible and executing their skills at a faster pace.
“We need to make the game more interesting and more exciting,
“It’s a new format for the sport that’s six-a-side, four quarters, rotating subs and sin bins,” Johnston said.
Johnston believes youth development in Australia is “going backwards at an alarming rate” due to not enough “kids playing [football] often enough.”
“A football back in my day was the toy of the day and now you have Playstations…that’s where it’s at,” Johnston said.
Johnston suggests the A-League teams feature in this competition which is “based on the arts, crafts and skills of the game.”

Maybe we can give points for near misses too.
Anyway, this isn't a new idea. Kids play on smaller fields with smaller teams. Playing 7 a side until 12-13 like they do in Spain would be great for development, but it's not great on tv.
Old people coming up with ideas of how to entertain the young'ins always ends up a cringy mess.

We used to have an amazing crop of developing youngsters but they either impaled themselves on star pickets or snapped their shins or suffered gead injuries on concrete blocks. A whole generation of promising footballers lost.

Hi Craig,
If you search up the word Futsal you would find that fast paced small sided format that you’re describing.

+x “A football back in my day was the toy of the day and now you have Playstations…that’s where it’s at,” Johnston said.
Why is this constantly brought up as something holding Australian football back? Newsflash Craig: Belgian, Spanish and German kids play playstation too.

If you want kids to play more football just ask what they want? In Belgium they did this and changed there SSG format which included 2v2 from the ages of 5 to 7?
Everyone is trying to find the silver bullet when the answer is right in front of us, just ask the kids what they want! And change the culture from there.

Looking at the headlines I thought he had the answer why people don't attend football in droves.

He seems to have had an awful lot to say lately. Mostly of no substance. See what one day hanging out with Fozz does.

The FFA has been built by people running the game who don't think its interesting enough. And all they have done is sent things backwards from a time when the game came out of its darkest days and largely consisted of state league players and Yorke If you don't like the game, fuck off
