Confirmed: Verdict handed down for Roy O'Donovan

The Football Federation Australia (FFA) independent Disciplinary & Ethics Committee comprising John Marshall SC (Chair), Lachlan Gyles SC, and Robert Wheatley (the Committee) today delivered their determination in the matter of Roy O’Donovan (the Player) of Newcastle Jets.

The independent Match Review Panel, having reviewed the incident at a hearing on Monday, 7 May 2018, determined that on the basis of the evidence reviewed the Player had committed the offence of “Serious foul play (e.g. when challenging for the ball)” (Offence) and referred the matter to the Committee for hearing and determination of the sole question of what additional sanction should be imposed over and above the Mandatory Match Suspension provided always that the Mandatory Match Suspension is served.

The Committee determined that the Player must serve a suspension of ten (10) Hyundai A-League matches and/or FFA Cup matches (whichever comes first), which includes the Mandatory Match Suspension.

If the Player wishes to appeal the determination of the Committee, he must advise FFA of his intention to do so within 7 days of receiving the written determination.

Before anyone says that it's harsh, all you need to do is look at this, no eyes on the ball:

He's very lucky Thomas wasn't very seriously injured.

Jets to appeal O’Donovan suspension

The Newcastle Jets have today been informed by Football Federation Australia (FFA) that the Independent Disciplinary and Ethics Committee has delivered their determination on the red card issued to Roy O’Donovan in the 2018 Hyundai A-League Grand Final.

Roy has been issued with a suspension of ten (10) Hyundai A-League matches and/or FFA Cup matches.

The Newcastle Jets are extremely disappointed with the outcome of this hearing and will immediately lodge an appeal on O’Donovan’s behalf.

The club would like to thank Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) for their support of Roy during this process, and their tireless work in building his defence.

The club will make no further comment on the matter at this time, and will await advice from the FFA on the details of an appeal hearing.

Kevin Muscat got less for breaking Zahra's leg and nearly ending his career. Ridiculous decision made by glass-jaw authoritarians.

I distinctly remember Robbie Fowler uppercutting a Gold Coast Brazilian with his foot, studs first, yet nothing happened.

I also remember Thomas being knocked out by Nabbout earlier in the year, resulting in a booking, despite Nabbout clearly going for the ball competitively - and yet no suspension (rightfully)

He's very lucky Thomas wasn't very seriously injured.

Yet Thomas made a miraculous recovery and even managed to wink at the camera, truly life-threatening stuff

He was a man of specific quirks. He believed that all meals should be earned through physical effort. He also contended, zealously like a drunk with a political point, that the third dimension would not be possible if it werent for the existence of water.

does the 10 games start from the A-league or include FFA cup games to?

Also if their appeal fails can the 10 match ban become longer?

Based on previous years the suspension can be served in FFA Cup matches AND friendlies also, so he could be starting in Rd1 if Newcastle organise enough friendlies in the off-season.

Lucky O'Donovan didn't ruffle the hair of a ball-boy, he could've been banned for half the season!

He was a man of specific quirks. He believed that all meals should be earned through physical effort. He also contended, zealously like a drunk with a political point, that the third dimension would not be possible if it werent for the existence of water.

And a fair enough comparison to make too.

Muscat's ban was too lenient, and the MRP/Disciplinary Committee have learnt from this.

Bare in mind this is O'Donovans second lengthy ban as a result of Serious Foul Play, so there's not much of a comparison to make.

A goalkeeper died in the Indonesian top league last year after a collision to the head.

It's good that a tough line in the sand is being drawn because we never want to see that happen here.

So if Roy pulled a gun and went to shoot Thomas and missed (though LT would have stopped that too, was on fire that night!) , because there was no harm it would be fine? He kick him in the face. Without looking at the ball.

the 10 weeks can't include friendlies surely, that would just be...err.....stupid....errr...okay okay it probably does since we're talking the ffa. Why not just include training sessions too. Or we could just literally make it 10 weeks and he'll be all set to resume training at the start of August.

Also yes the Muscat decision was light but that was years ago and all parties have learnt and moved on. What RO'D did was reckless and dangerous, could have easily blinded LT.

It definitely was dangerous and reckless and 10 weeks sounds about right. However, I can't believe as some seem to think that he targeted Thomas. If he had arrived a split second before Thomas instead of a split second after he would have got the ball and missed Thomas. Thomas arrived first, caught the ball and moved forward. His head ended up where the ball had been an instant before.

If that was not the case the charge would have been violent conduct and he would be missing the whole season.

Muscat's ban was eight weeks because there was eight rounds left of the season, and it was pretty clear it would mean his retirement.

This. It literally made no difference if Muscat got 8 weeks or eleventy billion, he'd announced his retirement already and the punishment was specifically designed so he would never play an A-league match again. Comparisons are absolutely moot.

10 weeks for putting your studs into the face of not just an upright keeper, but a freaking airborne one seems about right. It's not about whether he wins the ball or not it's about not attempting to win the ball when doing so puts the health of your opponents at serious risk.
