Now, I have pretty poor access to media and as a result, football and I rely heavily on this place and as an aside, I have abc radio chugging away in the background a lot so I regularly hear their poor half arsed attempts at covering our game. Due to the above, I've never been 100% sure of the pronunciation of our new managers name but he was just mentioned on abc radio news 3 times just then. To his credit, the announcer replicated this attempt perfectly each time but he basically sounded full of shit.
Phonetically, could those in the know please have a go at trying to help me correctly say Berts name. This clown on the radio had never come to grips with Ange's name over all these years and I don't buy this latest attempt. Maybe I am wrong though..
I have tried to write this announcers attempt at Berts name as best I can in the title of this thread. It sounded like he was under water when he said it too. Can anyone help me please.

I think Mar-vike is the best that can be asked of a monolingual Australian, like me.

Yeah I’ve been going with Mar-vike too. Not sure how correct that is though, just using the learnings from when we used to say Zwaanswijk.

Sounds like it could be Mara-vake https://forvo.com/word/marwijksoord/#nlor Mar-vake (scroll 1/5 way down page, list of 2010 Dutch WC names) http://www.heardutchhere.net/dureq.html#

+xYeah I’ve been going with Mar-vike too. Not sure how correct that is though, just using the learnings from when we used to say Zwaanswijk. I've studied languages and never been let down by Forvo. Sometimes the regional variations are a bit mixed up but that's it.

Ike or Ake varies depending on what area of the Netherlands you're in.

Haha Cheers for the helpful replies. I'm sure the abc has avenues to get pronunciation right but I don't think they bother for the Sokkah.

I remember the host on Offsiders trying to pronounce Bert's name. It was completely wrong, despite saying she had just checked with someone who supposedly knew how to pronounce it.

When the japanese cant pronounce the name of their foreign nanagers, this is basically what they do. Can you imagine the meltdown here if we did this?

He was asked in his first interview when announce as coach how to pronounce his name and he said "one time only" - Van Mar-fike.
Sounded like a soft V or almost an F.
