Perth Glory.

Wondering what the A-League would be like without some of these stupid gimmicky names.
Living in WA I am not happy with the club name and are wondering if there are any others that think the name just don't stick well with fans.

Some others:
Newcastle JETS.
Brisbane ROAR.

So cheesey and so Gimmicky
Arguements for and against using these names ?
- We're European settled, more heritage with UK style naming conventions. Examples everywhere tbh (government)
- We're not the USA they will never work.
- Football (roundball) needs to seperate from AFL , not using cheese names will help this.
- Already gone this way with WSW etc and IT WORKED well.

The first thing you want is a name that sticks well with the supporter base.

For me this is the single most critical factor of why THE supporters of this club (Perth Glory) just don't relate and remain loyal to the club.

I mean isn't loyalty high on the list of priorities for these clubs, keeping those same passionate fans coming back year after year.

bah any name other than some 'a feeling' probably more closely related to religion than anything else ?

I mean how close is 'that feeling' to anything football related ?

ffs, this is the most shitty name I've ever heard any team being named in the history of sports PERIOD

Perth need to change their club colours, if anything. The purple & white is far too synonymous nowadays w/the AFL's Dockers over there - by all means keep the current colour-scheme for a clash/heritage kit in future, but it's high-time the club adopted the WA state-colours of gold and black(with white and/or silver trims)

Yeah , named the club Perth Pooraiders. Sure , fans love it and we can't stop people racing through the gates.

Oh btw, we've got 3 defenders from the 2014 World Cup. It'll be a swell season for Pooraiders

That is easy, I mean we've seen simply going to a darker shade of something can tweak this over time.

But you'd expect 'Glory' to stick for generations, cos nobody seems to be able to admit its complete rubbish

Some others:
Newcastle JETS.

A couple of points on this one...

We needed a "name" to separate ourselves from Newcastle United in the UK (believe it was for legal reasons, not just to be different). "Jets" is not a name plucked out of the sky (no pun intended) but because of the RAAF base that's located about 30 minutes outside the CBD and which employees many Novocastrians, so it at least means something in context to the city and the fans. I quite like it, however Roar, Glory and Victory are all a bit lame..

Jets isn’t lame because you come up with some convoluted explanation but Roar is 😂😂😂

Here’s Roars convoluted explanation: Brisbane were formed as part of Lions FC who, for some fucking reason known only to themselves, had sold the naming rights to Brisbane Lions to the AFL and so looked for things associated with Lions (a bit like you claim Newcastle did to come up with Jets???) ... what do Lions do? They Roar! Where do Lions live? In a Den, what was the name of the then (and current) supporters group and bar at Richlands since the 1960’s ... oh, The Den! So Lions, Den, all fitted together under “Roar”

... how the fuck is that lame and Jets isn’t?? Farks sake, if you go the other way out of Newcastle you find beaches ... why not call them Newcastle Life Savers and play in Red and Yellow, supporters can wear optional scull caps?

Do you hear NRL fans complaining about the Bronco’s name?

Or euro-snobs complaining about Wednesday ... or Forest (and no, Sherwood Forest is nowhere near Nottingham ... who by the way don’t even play in Nottingham being based the wrong side of the river, as a former forest season ticket holder I never heard one complaint from the locals on these issues ... and when we played Wednesday the fanzine wasn’t full of angry letters from supporters complaining about the irresponsible club naming protocols.. )

.... and don’t get me started on Crewe Alexandra who the fuck names a football club after a PRINCESS _Argghhh, I’m so justifiably angry over this (not)

Surely it’s a peculiar habit of Australian football biters and whingers finding something to complain about - they’ve got their heads so far up their own arses they must surely smell their own shit by now?

Jets, Victory, Roar, Mariners, Glory ... they’re just names and no worse than dozens others you’ll find in the other 200+ countries that play football too. But the biters and the haters would need to know more about world football to understand.

Calling a club Young Boys is just asking for trouble. Especially in the women’s team.

But the UN should set up a commission made of Aussie football biters who can vet and approve all club names.

But at last .... we’ve found something that pro/rel can’t fix 😂

The difference is whether its an FFA-contracted cocaine-addled Marketing Consultant doing an exercise in Brand Generation.

Instead of a cute/peculiar/weird/unusual/historic name that appeared naturally out of the growth of a real club.

P.S The City boundary was moved later, so no wonder no-one mentions it.

Yeah sure. You were around in the 1800’s to know exactly how they came up with these names lol.

There’s just too many football biters in Australia they complain about shit.

If they moved to Yorkshire I can just imagine the response when they complain about “Wednesday” and I’ve been in the same ground when the Crew Kop (about 100 of them) chanted “Alexandra ....Alexandra .... Alexandra” - didn’t seem to bother them, they were just there for the football.

There’s stupid names everywhere, it’s called football.

For the record, Glory's name and colours were chosen specifically to avoid any baggage associated with names and colours associated with existing teams and/or ethnic groups - this was back in the NSL days when most teams had an ethnic alignment. It was (and is) meant to be a team for all West Australians.

Bring back Kangaroos

That was a good name for an Australian team playing in an overseas comp, but personally it's a bit m'eh as a team representing Perth in a domestic comp.

Interestingly, there is a Czech team nicknamed the Kangaroos with a Kangaroo as their logo.

@ 2018 Yeah sure. You were around in the 1800’s to know exactly how they came up with these names lol.

"They were created in 1865 at a special meeting at the Clinton Arms Hotel, Sherwood Street.
Since their first appearances were made at the Forest Recreation Ground their chosen name was synonymous with the location."

https://thebeautifulhistory.wordpress.com/clubs/nottingham-forest/

"Forest played out their earliest years at a number of different grounds. They started out at the Forest Racecourse (now Forest Recreation Ground) before relocating in 1879 to the Castle Ground and the Meadows. Between 1873-1885, they had spells at Trent Bridge, the Parkside Ground and the Gregory Ground, before occupying the Town Ground with some continuity between 1890-1895.In 1898, Forest moved to The City Ground after a concerted fundraising effort secured the £3,000 required."

https://www.nottinghamforest.co.uk/club/history-landing-page/history-of-nffc/

P.S On further investigation The Forest Recreation Ground was actually named because it was part of the original Sherwood Forest

I like the name. It sounds nice and elegant.  I actually think it's the best name in the a-league. My least favourite would have to be Roar, which is ridiculous, and WSW, which is unnecessarily long winded and stupidly derivative. What the hell does the Wanderers even mean in Australia? It's just a fucking copy of an English club name without any local significance. WTF is that better than Glory?
