Foster issues World Cup rallying cry

JULY 15, 2018

WITH the eyes of the world on Moscow for the World Cup final, ex-Socceroo Craig Foster says root-and-branch reform is required for Australia to match soccer’s heavyweights.

The SBS commentator has also called on the Federal Government to show courage and start investing in a plan aimed at winning the World Cup final, which is expected to be played out before by an estimated worldwide TV audience of over 1 billion.

Australia’s stagnation is directly linked with the political cloud hanging over the game, with FIFA still watching closely, according to Foster who’s used SBS’s World Cup coverage to voice his discontent.

Foster declared that the World Cup final is a great time to reassess while calling on the Federal government to step up its support ahead of a critical period.

“It’s one of the most critical moments in the game’s history and we’ve had a few. We’ve arrived at another critical juncture,’’ Foster said.

“It’s actually positive that FFA made some really poor philosophical decisions regarding (the Socceroos) at this World Cup because it’s only fuelled the desire for governance change.

“That desire’s been strong for a long time, but it’s never gonna happen until the broader Australian community and government understands that the Lowy-led model of control, proprietorship, closure no longer works.

“It only works if you want to keep the game small now, and it’s time to open up to the best people in the game.

“I believe that change is gonna happen, the Lowys have had their time and it’s now time for the football community to inherit our game.

“They made a contribution — as much negative as positive, because I don’t accept that this was all the game was capable of after more than a decade.

“And just as revolution ultimately occurs in such countries, I believe the revolution is now underway in Australian football and it’s overdue.”

FIFA is watching on closely after the temporary working group appointed by the world governing body — chaired by London-based lawyer Judith Griggs — set a July 31 deadline for reform proposal.

Foster, who helped reform the players union and is active in the political, youth development and indigenous spheres, is looming as a pivotal figures of the next era.

“The biggest thing out of this World Cup I hope is that Australia recognises the importance of this game. The whole country has to rise above the petticoat politics,’’ he said.

“It’s not a question of whether funding goes to AFL, football, league or any other sport — those fights are too common and should be resigned to the past.

“Australia should recognise that this is the greatest sporting challenge we’ve ever faced and that this is the final and greatest challenge that we must overcome.

“So the nation, politicians, the PM, the government of the day needs to understand and make a decision — that this is what we need to win.

“And by planning as a nation to win this, it’s not prioritising football over any other game. They all coexist and that’s the beautiful thing about Australia.

“This is the most important trophy on the planet and if we can win this, we will be the greatest sporting nation on earth.

“That takes a plan and takes leadership and bravery from the governments.”

Fozz's anti BvM thing borders on insanity. He had us playing balanced football. Ffs the last game was hardly any different than any game under ange. We arguably controlled the game vs Denmark as well.

How many countries at this cup played all out attacking possession football? More importantly, how many succeeded? Did France play this way?

What does he expect?

How many countries at this cup played all out attacking possession football? More importantly, how many succeeded? Did France play this way?

What does he expect?

He expected us to be more aggressive, and take more risks when the first two games were in the balance - not to meekly settle for the draw against Denmark and a narrow loss to France. He expected Cahill to come on in the last 15 minutes against Denmark when the crosses were flying in. He also probably expected more sensible substitutions across the board and even a bit of squad rotation which might have prevented everyone being exhausted against Peru. He also might have expected a coach who uses slightly better motivational lines that "normally we lose to France 9 times out of 10".

I think that Foster has never been more right than when talking about BvM. It just didn't work. Bert was never the right fit. Fozz certainly isn't alone in his views. Zdrilic and Craig Moore agreed with him 100%.

We can all agree the Lowy's time is over and has been for a while.

Equally, its not Fozzie's time neither.

An issue I have with Craig is he will say we need a broad base of community voices but then drown out anyone who disagrees with his ideas.

He attacks anything relentlessly, he disagrees with, and he mostly gets in people who have similar views.

Its not I am against a lot of what he says, but its pot calling kettle black,

Whatever you think of him his message here is correct. We need a revolution out of the current working committee, not a friggin compromise.

Lowy needs to take a step back, if he/they love the game they’ll do just that while still helping support the game financially.

The next two weeks are crucial.

He's not wrong about the other stuff but his support for Southern Expansion severely impairs his credibility.

Do they still support the game financially? How much of the Westfield empire actually trickles back into the game here in Australia? From the outside, it would seem if you put S.Lowy's pay packet from FFA up against what he actually contributes from a professional sense, I'd imagine there would be a severe imbalance.

Yeah to a degree, he has some good moments.

The Olympics is funded heavily and is a very similar type event.

Makes no sense why it shouldn't be better assisted by federal government.

The World Cup I mean.

Can we please treat these issues in isolation.

People on here talking about Foster's opinion on BvM or his involvement in Southern Expansion like it matters.

You'd have to be squarely in the minority if your think the Lowy bandwagon should keep rolling on.

Interesting that he makes comments about it being time for Lowy to go, while at the same time he's trying to get them to approve his shiny new club. I wonder if they've given Foster a quiet tap on the shoulder and said he has no chance of getting Southern Expansion across the line.

Not the point you are making but I wouldnt have a problem with the Lowy's having a football club

The FFA needs to be a stand alone organisation that is there for the running of the national teams and grass roots
The League needs a stand alone body where it keeps (say) $5m to run the league, gives the FFA 10%, and everything else is divided equally among the clubs
The clubs need to be independent from the league and they keep everything they earn including finals gate keepings

Currently all three are one and the same which leads to the highest level of self interest we have seen in this country for the running of our game

If Lowys had a club under my proposed structure they either invest and can rightfully keep everything they earn or are relegated

True, he is a spokesperson for Southern Expansion and he may have some sort of agenda writing such a piece - FWIW I think it would be the worst possible choice for expansion -but you can't deny the fact that change has to occur.... starting with governance and this Lowy-led dictatorship that is FFA. Would be interesting though to see if Fozzie is still this vocal if the Southern Expansion bid is denied.

He's right about change at the top 100%. At the same time though I can't look too much into what Foz thinks needs to happen to improve football, while he's taking up a bid that could fuck up the whole A-league expansion.
I could bet my life on it that deep down inside Foz knows that the playing out of wollongong, Sutherland, and kogorah is one pathetic idea that not only won't work, but if you really love and understand football you shouldn't even want it to work.
But on this topic he's 100% correct.

Even if the Lowy's were doing a good job, which they're not, numerous other organisations specifically curb the tenure of leaders good or bad to prevent the fermenting of dictatorships. We've had 15 years of their shit which is 5 years too long for someone even if  they're doing the job well.
