FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ to be played with 32 teams 22 May 2019
In line with the conclusions of the feasibility study approved by the FIFA Council at its last meeting, FIFA and Qatar have jointly explored all possibilities to increase the number of participant teams from 32 to 48 teams by involving neighbouring countries at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™.
Following a thorough and comprehensive consultation process with the involvement of all the relevant stakeholders, it was concluded that under the current circumstances such a proposal could not be made now.
Additionally, FIFA and Qatar have once again explored the feasibility of Qatar hosting a 48-team tournament by in particular lowering certain key FIFA requirements. A joint analysis, in this respect, concluded that due to the advanced stage of preparations and the need for a detailed assessment of the potential logistical impact on the host country, more time would be required and a decision could not be taken before the deadline of June. It was therefore decided not to further pursue this option.
The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ will therefore remain as originally planned with 32 teams and no proposal will be submitted at the next FIFA Congress on 5 June. https://www.fifa.com/worldcup/news/fifa-world-cup-qatar-2022tm-to-be-played-with-32-teams

+x[quote]involving neighbouring countries
lowering certain key FIFA requirements. 1. No one wanted to be linked to Qatar 2. How low can you go? Maybe it will be a park + hill.

The tension and politics surrounding Qatar and their neighbouring countries would always prevent this from happening.

48 teams would have meant games in other mid East countries. Due to the underlying politicsof Sunni Vs Shia it is sensible to drop idea of 48 teams.
Europe is funding the war not Chelsea football club

The squad we have now is a lot better than the one that qualified in 2014 so we should still make it.

It's going to be very tight. It really depends who we draw. Here's me nervous about round 2 let alone round 3. Despite Thailand murdering us last time I feel we'd be better suited avoiding the middle east. We're strong at home.

We deserved to take a point off the team that won the WC and the Asian Cup was played in the Middle East while we were missing half our first team. Anything can happen in Football but we should make it. We are clearly in the top four teams in the AFC and the only team that can bother us in term of quality outside the top four is Saudi Arabia. With 4.5 spots up for grabs we should be very confident. Hopefully the inter confederation playoff game is v COCACAF again and the Asian team gets another deadbeat team like Panama. Seriously good to still be in AFC.

You've deadset got to be mental if you're planning on going to this after what everyone has seen at the Asian Cups in UAE and Qatar. Gulf states don't have a fucking clue how to host major events.

Will be interesting to see if Qatar choose to continue in Round 3 of Qualifying when they make it. It will be better for us if they decide not to continue once they have qualified for the Asian Cup.

Only 8 stadiums available. Should be glad FIFA didn't have to reduce the number of teams to 24 for this WC.

8 stadiums 50km from each other. Go for 2 weeks, base yourself in Doha and you can see as many games as you want knowing that demand for tickets will be low.

No Tim Cahill though, he was the difference in that team The difference was that extra coat of paint that kept Syria's free kick out in the play-off match in Australia. A fraction to the left and we'd have been parked on our arses at home.

As close as we came to getting knocked out does everyone remember when Juric hit the post twice in the first leg against Syria right in front of an open net? Footballs a game of inches but we oughta have won that first leg and we had a dubious penalty awarded against us aswell Ange also pulled some weird formation out of his ass and started with Troisi and left Mooy on the bench and played a back 3 in the 2nd leg SMH
