Club has confirmed we've signed Brattan to replace Brillante on a one year deal

Sydney FC Sign Three Time A-League Winner

Hyundai A-League Champions Sydney FC has signed three-time A-League Champion Luke Brattan on a one-year contract for the Hyundai A-League 2019-20 season.

The 29-year old midfielder, who has also tasted success winning the Hyundai A-League Premiership twice and the Westfield FFA Cup, arrived at Sydney FC’s training base this morning to meet his new team-mates and will begin training with them tomorrow.

“I’m delighted to be here and signing with Sydney FC,” said the former Manchester City midfielder.

“It is a huge club and we have some fantastic quality in the squad who I am looking forward to playing alongside.

“Sydney FC is the benchmark in the Hyundai A-League and my aim is to help push that to another level this season.

“I’m looking forward to winning more trophies with this incredible group of players and helping to take this club to our best ever finish in the AFC Champions League.”

Head Coach Steve Corica is happy to be adding another proven A-League quality player to his already healthy stocks.

“Luke is a highly experienced player in this league and will strengthen our squad, providing exceptional competition for places.

“Like many in our squad he is winner having won six domestic Australian trophies and I know he is looking to thrive on this new challenge in his career.”

Brattan will go immediately into contention to face St George FA on Tuesday night at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium and is set to travel to China to face PSG in the next fortnight.

He will wear the number 26 jersey.

Grant Wilkinson McGowan Zullo
O'Neill Brattan
Baumjohann        Ninkovic
Barbarouses
ALF

Bench: Heward-Belle, King, Retre, Caceres, Ivanovic
Depth: Warland, Buhagier (both need to recover)

We're looking pretty good on paper. A bit light at CB and banking on Redders not getting a knock. Think we're good in attack. Retre and Caceres can both fill into the Buamjohann right side. Ivanovic and Buhagier with attacking depth and hopefully Tilio gets some minutes.

Sign a couple of extra defenders for depth and Sydney are looking very strong.

Yes very good side. Hoping ivanovic gets some decent minutes this year. Big hopes for him. I don’t think king will be on the  bench as retre can play anywhere along the back 4 and in midfield. He has even shown he can play winger too.

I’d have buhagiar in front of him tbh. I’d love to see more Teague as well. Could make the club some good coin if he develops well. Same with TILIO

I wonder if we still have a marquee spot open. Squad looks incredibly good on paper, just need some defensive depth and a gun marquee striker would just be taking the piss.

It was mentioned Barbarouses might go to marquee when he signed. Wouldn’t be surprised if Baumjohann was the other and the club was going more cheaper but proven on the marquee front.

Dont think we need anything more up front. ALF, Barbarouses Ivanovic and Buhagier can all play there and I’d like to see the latter two along with Tillio who’s a winger developed.

Think we probably need a squaddie that can cover RB/CB

Would definitely be happy with the squad we have now but if we threw in a next level striker I wouldn't be upset. I think Kosta and ALF possibly have enough goals in them, between them, given the right service and yeah, always happy to see youngsters given a go and progressing.

surprised all clubs dont follow this model, invest heavily in your starting XI in terms of cap with players who arent injury prone and fulfill a specific role in the coaches game plan, offset depth with your youngsters and cheap squaddies who can come in when needed.

All of Sydney FC starting XI players would walk into the starting XI of other teams, you cant say that about every team in this league

Every aleague club does that, you must be new to the aleague.
Melbourne Victory did this last season and look how it turned out.
This is is why aleague clubs don’t develop youngsters into their first teams for this reason as their is no incentive to do so.

Really don’t get this signing when Sydney have an under 17 national captain on their wings ready to play in Ryan Teague, brattan is a good player but never had the desire to try his luck overseas through his career.

That is absolutely not true.

Look at the model Adelaide use. Not only do they put competitive sides on the park, 1 or 2 youngsters break into the first team every season.

Adelaide also sell players to overseas clubs and  have been successful on the pitch having won 4 trophies in the last 5 seasons. Only Sydney has won more.

Adelaide’s owners literally bought the club because they wanted to develop young players while having a side that finishes in the top 3 every season. The A-League is one of the few leagues where this is possible and that is down to the way it’s set up.

Which youngsters broke into the first team last season and played regularly? Kurz didn’t even go to watch their youth team games at one stage.

My point being that clubs like Sydney fc and Melbourne victory and last season Perth glory won’t do this as they want a top heavy team to win the aleague team as see youth as backup when they should see it as an investment.

Tue structure of the rules doesn’t help but where is the inventive?

Ryan Strain became a regular starter last season. George Blackwood played regularly when fit as well. I don’t think he’s ready to be a starting striker this season but will still get plenty of mins. This season the likes of Nathan Konstandopoulos, Brook and Armieno should get plenty of mins off the bench this season.

I agree. They should see it as an investment but they don’t. In fairness I think Sydney’s youngsters will get mins off the bench this season and I wouldn’t be surprised if the likes of Ivanovic, Buhagiar and among others will become starters in a season or two.
