Guptill looks decent. Needs to show something against a good nation though, his only decent score came against Bangas IIRC? What's he like domestically?

He managed 122 not out on ODI debut against the West Indies, and has 50's against Australia and India (twice each IIRC) and has an ODI average in the mid-30s.

As with all the centrally contracted NZ cricketers, he tears the domestic competition apart. As you see with that list, the ones outside the 14 or so you see playing regularly for NZ also tear apart the domestic scene but often struggle at international level (i.e. Brent Arnel, Jeetan Patel)

Especially if England win. Would be fantastic though. Ponting being booted after being the first captain to lose the Ashes in aus since 1986.

Actually, has any Captain lost 3 Ashes series in his time? Would be interesting to find out. Deffinitely an Accolade Ponting would deserve.

Great Batsmen, average captain, although this recent bullshit i don't think wasn't his fault, like if your bowlers aren't doing the job what can you do really? I don't think he'll go, i still think he's driven to win in England

as a captain he is the best option we've had since Steve Waugh retired.

The biggest mistake we have made is not making Warne captain after Waugh retired.

Amongst the controversy its probably best that didn't happen. We appointed Gilchrist didn't didn't we? He was a solid option.

Controversy or not on the field Warne was the best option and we really fucked up by appointing Punter instead of him.

Warne would have made a great captain IMO. Brilliant tactical Mind. Ponting is decent but makes some strange decisions and is useless at making field placements.

+1 he would of made a brilliant captain on the field, you only have to look at what he did with Rahjastan... although media wise, and off-field maybe not, Gilchrist was favourite wasn't he and then they gave it to Ponting?

Bowlers are generally avoided as captins though, too problematic. But i do agree, Warne had a great cricket mind.

I thought they appointed Gilly for a little while, but maybe they were just for the ODI's.

This. You could see after Punter was made captain, he was always going top Warne for advice. I have no doubt with Warne as captain we wouldn't have lost the Ashes in 2005.

Cricket: ND sign three overseas stars

Northern Districts will field three high-profile overseas players in this season's domestic Twenty20 cricket competition, chief executive David Cooper confirmed today.

Northern Districts have become the first team to feature three overseas stars on their roster following the signings of South African opening batsman Herschelle Gibbs and Australian top-order players Brad Hodge and David Warner.

The move will dramatically bolster Northern Districts' top order as they chase the domestic title, and a spot in next year's Champions League.

Gibbs is committed to South African side Cape Cobras and will be available for Northern Districts from round four at the earliest, or later if the Cobras progress to the playoffs in the South African competition, provided Cricket South Africa agree to release him.

Hodge will kit up in the pink colours of Northern Districts for the opening four rounds, while the period of Warner's availability depends on whether he is selected to play in Australia's four-day competition for New South Wales.

Big-hitting Warner is considered a limited overs specialist and if not required by NSW, he will join Northern Districts from round three until the end of the competition.

Cooper also said it was likely Hamish Marshall would be rejoining Northern Districts as an overseas player after the Twenty20, from January.

The former New Zealand representative's Irish passport enables him to be contracted to Gloucestershire as a domestic player in English county cricket, meaning he must play as an overseas player when he returns to his native New Zealand.

It's a pretty massive shame that he never played test match cricket, like a player of that quality in any other era would have been a no brain starter in the Aus XI

Brad Hodge got supremely fucked over by the Australian Selectors. Probably the unluckiest man in Cricket. He'd have 100 tests for any other country.

One of many players in the wrong era, he's great, just wasn't great enough for his prime playing time.

pretty much when you had batsmen like Lehmann, the Waugh bros. Hayden, Langer, Ponting, Martyn... like think of the travesty that Micheal Bevan didn't play alot of test matches... although the thing that has always baffled me, how the fuck did Martin Love get a test cap, he was fucking useless

Seriously? Wow, dude, he was great. He was the Queensland Brad Hodge. Averaged 50 in the shield for Queensland, scored 44 centuries and 78 fifties among in 213 matches. So in more than half of his matches (122), he passed 50. He is also a centurion for Australia, and held an average of 46. Not useless at all, I loved the bloke.

Yeah, Love deserved his shot, and did well enough, another bloke in the wrong country.

Yup. Another name you can add to the list. Could probably make a Test Standard XI from blokes who have missed out on International Careers because they were playing in Aus the past 20 years.

I think it's fair to say New Zealand Cricket would not exist without Daniel Vettori.

Tripeli?? haha do you mean Chappelli?

Someone explain to me the rules of this new one day thing. Do they get 10 new wickets each innings or if youre down 5 after your first 20 youre down 5 to start your 25?

The Latter.
It's basically a normal innings, but with a break in the middle, rather than 2 seperate innings.

Wait I just used five as an example. They only get 5 wickets each innings? Who bats second innings if theyre five down? openers or 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11?

 I was continuing to use 5 as an example.

If your're 2/110 after 20 overs, you start the next 'innings' at 2/110, with the same batsman.

If you're 5/32 after 20 overs, you start at 5/32 with the same batsman.

If you're all out before the 20, you don't bat again.
