I'm pretty sure any team is eligible to apply. I would assume it would be regional and state based in the initial rounds to cover expenses.. With it going national at the round of 32 or something..

I want to get excited for this but i refuse to believe anything will happen this year until i see the draw being done. Still unbelievably bitter over the mid season canning of Melbourne's participation in the FFV Cup.

So two clubs from Brisbane (not Queensland), which indicates that it won't be opened up state wide before the last 32. I assume at least another spot or two in the last 32 will come from Queensland, outside of Brisbane?

I agree, however it is highly likely that there will be a sponsor. They will try to monetize this as much as possible.

In the forums we'll still call it the FFA Cup, but officially it will have some official sponsor like the NAB Cup or whatever.

Would you prefer a viable and lucrative Cup for semi-pro clubs, or one that fails and dies within 3 years but is very traditional and principled? But yes, if there is a way to achieve viability without tarnishing it in any way that would be brilliant!

Either way, this will be the best thing to happen to Australian football since 2006. Cannot wait!

A big sponsor is needed. It'll help get the cup off the ground. I agree with Davo, football fans can still refer to it as the 'Australian Football Cup', or the 'FFA Cup', but the best thing would be to get a big name sponsor on board from day one.

Even the English FA cup now has naming sponsorship rights. It's done by the American beer 'Budweiser'.



Now even if we didn't have the stupid anti-alcohol thing the FFA signed up for, I wouldn't suggest we go selling our soul to Carlton & United. The VB FFA Cup just doesn't have the ring to it.

However I can't see why a major bank wouldn't want to get in on it, or a major car company.

Football Federation Australia's attempts to launch the FFA Cup are being hampered by delays from the state federations in confirming their own qualification paths.

The governing body was hoping to launch the tournament last month but has been forced to wait as the states and territories determine the dates and pre-tournaments they will use as a qualification base for the event proper.

Fairfax Media understands each state and territory needs to supply their qualifying teams by the end of June, with a start to the 32-team tournament proposed for July, at some point after the World Cup final.

The expected format comprises nine Australian A-League teams (leaving out Wellington Phoenix), eight NSW teams, four Victorian teams, four Queensland teams, two Western Australian teams, two northern NSW teams, one South Australian team, a Tasmanian team and a team from the ACT.

The rationale for the allotment has been based on participation numbers, which explains the strong presence from northern NSW, where participation numbers greatly exceed the national average. The finalists of the 2014 Northern NSW State Cup, to be held in Coffs Harbour, will gain entry into the FFA Cup.

The resources of state associations are already being consumed in adjusting to the FFA-mandated National Premier Leagues model, which will be rolled out nationwide this year after Victorian clubs accepted a compromise model last month.

However, it will not be the state leagues that determine qualification for the FFA Cup, with the knockout tournaments in each state and territory the key to a place on the national stage.

The teams coming from NSW will have to qualify via the Waratah Cup, while Victoria's State Knockout Cup will provide their entrants.

The timing of South Australia's Federation Cup has been moved from August to May and Tasmania's event will end in June, as is expected to happen in Western Australia.

Football Queensland – which has no knockout cup – have invented a knockout qualification tournament from scratch, one which will encompass the zones of Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and North Queensland.

The knockout format means teams from the bottom of the football pyramid can hope to take their place against the relative giants from the A-League in the final tournament.

One of the hold-ups is coming from the Australian Capital Territory, where Tuggeranong United believed they had qualified for the event after winning the Federation Cup.

However, as the tournament was not originally sanctioned as the qualifier for the main tournament, Capital Football has decided on another qualification tournament, one held in March and April, before the ACT Premier League kicks off. Tuggeranong – who boasted Socceroos star Tom Rogic on their books just over two years ago – have filed an appeal to Capital Football, claiming they should be the territory's representative.

It is understood that the Federation Cup will serve as the FFA Cup qualifier from 2015 onwards.

The FFA is hoping to finalise the arrangements with all the states and territories in the coming month before making a full launch. They are also in the process of finalising a major sponsor and broadcast agreements.

The final of the tournament from 2016 onwards will be on Australia Day but has been brought forward for the inaugural season to December 2014 to avoid clashing with the Asian Cup.

The first of the two Asian Cup semi-finals at ANZ Stadium has already been scheduled for that day.

So the NSW qualifications =

- 4 A-League teams (Sydney, West Sydney, Central Coast & Newcastle)

- 4 State League teams I'm assuming (Winner of the Waratah Cup, Winner of the NSW Premier League, Winner of the NSW Premier League Finals). As for the 8th team in all of that, not sure how that'll work. Perhaps it'l be the runner up of the league/finals/cup should one team win more than one competition.

No, the numbers listed for each state exclude that state's A-League teams. So there will be eight NSW representatives from the State League, plus the four A-League clubs.

The next logical step after winning the FFA Cup is the ACL cup.

The team winning the top domestic league (A-league) is the first team to go to the ACL.

The winner of the top domestic cup comp (FFA Cup winner) is the second team to go to the ACL.

The runner up to the top domestic league (A-league) is the third team to go to the ACL.

So, who goes to the ACL???

If it's based on participation rates, fair enough. It's not the Australian Senate, where as one westie would call it "...an unrepresentative swill...".

Would predict a consolidation in the future, where either (i) NT being part of WA or SA or QLD, with a spot taken from Northern NSW or FNSW. (ii) ACT part of FNSW and (iii) Tas part of Vic.

I'm not entirely sure how the Northern Territory league is set up.

You don't hear a lot about the Tasmanian league, but you hear nothing ever about the NT League. Perhaps their winner could play in a play off with a Tasmanian League. .5 of a spot sort of thing.

I don't care what anyone says that is ridiculous. Why NSW needs that many is ridiculous. SA, tas and act should have 2 then you can still give nsw 5 and nth nsw 2 or give nt 1 as well and put nsw on par with Vic and qld with 4 while allowing 2 to nth nsw. That's still 6 in nsw plus a league teams which is a fair reflection. The bias shows again

Even as a Sydneysider myself, I have to agree with what you're saying.

Nearly half of the teams in the FFA Cup proper (14/32) will be from NSW... it doesn't make sense.
