Graham Cornes: Time for Adelaide to build a new soccer stadium

GREG Griffin is right. The resolute chairman of Adelaide United, who is always up for a fight, has long been calling for Adelaide to have its own purpose built soccer stadium.

Thursday night gave him more ammunition. We love Adelaide Oval but as magnificent as the new development is, unless it’s full, it just isn’t right for soccer.

The Socceroos’ World Cup qualifier against Saudi Arabia was a vital, significant match against quality opposition, yet less than 30,000 people attended.

We can get a full house for a mickey-mouse exhibition match against Liverpool yet when the serious stuff is on and a couple of our home grown players are in the team, the soccer fans stay home.

They make a lot of noise but sometimes it’s out of all proportion to the popularity of the sport in this country.

Mile Jedinak of Australia leads his players onto the Adelaide Oval.

Nevertheless it was an entertaining match with a happy ending for the Socceroos who are now well-placed to qualify for the World Cup tournament in Russia. And the goals were superb, particularly Australia’s third, a Tom Rogic thunderbolt.

The reality however is that the Oval is not a suitable venue in which to watch a soccer match.

You are too far from the action and when there are cavernous empty spaces in the stands, the match lacks any real atmosphere.

Besides, the surface is not good enough for the elite players. The Saudi goalkeeper discovered that the hard way when he slipped as the ground shifted beneath his feet and he gifted Tomi Juric Australia’s first goal.

FIFA is obviously not as pedantic as it once was about the preparation of the ground for these elite matches. Prior to the Olympic tournament in 2000 there were excruciating demands made of the venues for the preparation of and the quality of the surfaces. Iconic football grounds don’t always make for good soccer pitches.

We have a great soccer ground in Adelaide. Hindmarsh Stadium is a brilliant venue in which to play and watch soccer matches.

Adelaide United chairman Greg Griffin.

However, it has severe limitations by today’s standards. It’s not an all-weather stadium, it doesn’t have the capacity for these big games and it doesn’t have adequate corporate facilities. And while it is well served by major roads and transport services, it doesn’t have the convenience or the appeal of a venue in the CBD.

For all the hype around the new Adelaide Oval, the atmosphere at an Adelaide United home game rivals and often surpasses that of any footy match at Adelaide Oval. But Hindmarsh Stadium is old and it’s tired. Our state’s soccer fans deserve better.

State governments will argue that while they support the concept of the world game having its own purpose-built stadium, they simply can’t prioritise that over other essential services.

The mantra of “schools, hospitals and transport” is hard to argue against. However, political parties should also see the value and voter-appeal of the world game. “Bread and circuses” have been known to keep governments in power before today.

Could Hindmarsh Stadium be upgraded to an internationally accepted standard? It possibly could but there would still be limitations on access, parking and space.

Roos scrape through qualifier

It would be far better to spend the money on a new venue closer to the city and preferably one with a roof. The government would have some powerful supporters for such a project. Rob Gerard, given his passion for an Adelaide Commonwealth Games, would surely be an enthusiastic advocate.

Soccer would not be the only beneficiary of a new venue. The Sydney Roosters and Melbourne Storm rugby league teams will play in Adelaide on 24th June at Adelaide Oval.

As with soccer, rugby league (and union) is a much harder game to watch on an Aussie rules ground than it is on a rectangular pitch.

There are many who say that building a new soccer stadium will never happen. But there are many, including this writer, who said that AFL football would never again be played at Adelaide Oval.

FFA should have started this process years ago and promised the SA government a second tenant. AU will not get a stadium to themselves, Adelaide needs a RL team or football playing there too. Union is about to cull a team so that is no chance.

It's a bit of a shock for Graham Cornes of all people to come out and say it. But then you see his ridiculous comment about the noise we make compared to how popular we are - the largest participation sport in the country - and you remember what the state of play is.

I think the stadium is going under the radar and would usually get slammed but people are distracted slamming the saudis.

But still small steps

The government has reaffirmed its position though on football. That being they will not consider a new stadium in the Adelaide Oval precinct because they need to have a training ground there in case they host the Commonwealth Games. This is the standard Adelaide government approach to everything. We can't do anything, anywhere, any time - because one day we might host the Commonwealth Games which we never bid for, and which nobody has cared about since the British actually had an empire.

it is never going to happen with a state labor party in power...
When they were in opposition , they complained about the hindmarsh upgrade for the 2000 olympics...
they see more votes chasing populist AFL junkets in china and expensive oval upgrades

The difference is that Sports/Events generates money for a state's economy, ie the Brazil Argentina match on right now in Victoria, which the state government invested $10 million in attracting. State investment in bricks and mortar in this field can reap profits all throughout society for decades to come.

Sports and major events like this bring $1.8 billion a year into the Victorian economy, nine times more than the new $200 million Joan Kirner Women and Children's hospital will cost. You do the maths.

This stuff doesnt help the cause. Like Socceroos or AU playing games at AO.

ADELAIDE Oval is set to play host to rugby league’s showpiece event — State of Origin — in an historic first.

State Tourism Minister Leon Bignell confirmed on Wednesday morning Adelaide will for the first time host a match in the best-of-three series between Queensland Maroons and New South Wales Blues in 2020.

Not so happy they are even playing the game there. If you are going to play O/S do it in Auckland not Adelaide.

The media and govt keep spruiking this whole adelaide oval is world class stadium shite... I bet those Qld and NSW fans are going to love the crap view of their game when they are in the top tiers of the western and southern stand...

If only we had a 20-30k rectangular stadium,,,, Alas that will never happen with this anti football state govt

If Adelaide had a 20/30k spanking new stadium Origin would still be played at Adelaide Oval - NRL manages the images of their series very carefully and 50k at AO is way better than 30k at a rectangular stadium with better sight lines. Interestingly League fans don’t seem as bothered as football fans on issues like this. I haven’t checked but I’m betting NRL social media isn’t clogged with criticism of playing on an oval.

You think it would ? the atmosphere at 30k packed stadium , wouldnt it be better than the oval shaped mess ?

Yes.

I haven't been to MCG for RL but remember watching the Broncos at ANZ (QSAC). League isn't a good sport when you are far away. Especially if you aren't up high.

@ Nachoman.

Yeah definitely. These games (MCG, Perth Oval and then Adelaide Oval) don’t have to be moved, they’re being taken nationally to promote the code and they want stage managed, big stadium events.

There is criticism of the move but it’s not to do with the shape of grounds, just taking the State game out of the two states concerned.

If the AAPFC and AAFC want to understand what Gallop/Lowy fear about the clubs having more power and control they’d do well to look at NRL where the clubs are just as political as football’s equivalent. NRL is not entirely a happy bunch of campers often making football look well run and stable lol.

Perhaps its time we team up with the AFL and get them to assist us in building rectangular stadiums for their bullshit game AFLX. It would be deliciously ironic because I would expect new stadiums to be built in no time.

And when they tell us to get fucked that'll be all the proof we need that the whole point of AFLX all along was to starve football of infrastructure at both elite and grassroots levels.

seeing that almost all government funding for sports infrastructure in the southern states goes towards AFL, it might actually be in our best interests for AFLX to take off... as funny as it sounds.

That would be a dream however it would seem more likely AFL would receive funding to help build Eddies Victoria Stadium, at least in Melbourne anyway.

"He said he envisaged the venue showcasing rugby league, rugby union, soccer and AFL matches, as well as major concert tours."
