any thoughts on what people might think will happen at the end of the season? To say this has been a massive flop is an understatement.

I acknowledge CH 10 signed a 2 year deal, but after the CBS buyout of CH 10, is there any chance there will be a mutual contract termination? If so, would any other FTA channel be interested?

In fact I was under the impression that it only went to Ten because of its link to Fox (at the time)

By "flop" do you mean Channel 10 has been disappointed with the numbers and are looking to offload the games??

I would have thought they'd put very little money into the deal, as Fox pretty much do all the production of the game anyway. So not covering their costs through advertisers??

FFA has nowhere to turn on this. They shafted SBS for this and it backfired. No other FTA station will pick it up seeing how it went on One. And SBS won't take it back after the way they were treated.

Football on FTA is dead.

The play that does make sence is HAL on Saturday nights on SBS1 before the EPL fixture. That gives benefit to everyone ..... although the FFA can’t expect much $ now. Totally agree the FFA have cocked this up - just one more on the long, long list of things cocked up ... but hey, Steve and Dave are doing this for the good of the game right?

SBS would take it back regardless of "how they were treated", if it makes business sense to them. Because that's what it would come down to, business.

I've personally enjoyed this arrangement with Ten, transferring the FoxSports product to FTA, unlike the SBS arrangement, but, if that has to change, give it to the ABC for free. Simulcast using FoxSports coverage, to allow FoxSports to promote their product; ABC to show the one match a week ad-free. The W-League did very well on ABC, and they could get a reasonable market consolidation with a more honest audience. All sport that has succeeded in the mainstream in this country has had its broadcasting roots in the ABC. ABC would surely have space in their programming, either because their channels targeted for young people may have wound up for the day, or because they make get a ratings boost by their general standards. Football/soccer on SBS makes it a fringe sport - of course whilst acknowledging that the SBS has historically been of great service to the game. FoxSports/Ten arrangement can be seen as a little bit plastic, it has to be said, potentially putting people off. There's no easy solution.

Maybe FFA will soon be paying FTA to show HAL games.
How could so many get it so wrong?I remember Sage talking up CH 10 coverage and what impact it would have. What ot tells me is so many people controlling football are clueless when it comes to what football fans want.

Why would you think that ABC would be different? At least SBS treated the game with dignity - have we all forgotten about the abortion that was ABC's coverage of the Liverpool Legends match? That was only last year as well...

Maybe we need to stop defining our sport by the network that shows it

The two games on Saturday has caused confusion on the FTA game I feel.

MORE importantly, and sadly, the game lacks too much in its current state.

People won't sit down and watch it , especially because it doesn't showcase any team they're interested in , most of the time.

This. I think the move to Saturday night was an error. Friday after work I was willing to watch any game. Saturday night I have a lot of options that make watching any other game than CCM a bit of an opportunity cost scenario. And CCM aren't on very often and if it is a home game I am not watching the TV.
The horrible later Sunday night games would be the ones to televise. Don't go to those live because the kids get home too late. Would watch on the tele.

I wonder if they could negotiate a deal like the AFL has ... that is all local WA games are televised to the WA audience (and then similar for other locations). So that way say in WA you get to watch the Glory play (maybe a slight delay for home games) every game, and also get one "game of the week".

Maybe for Sydney and Melbourne crowds they only get local team games?? (As they have two teams each).

Part of the problem with that scenario could be that there are only 10 teams in the league (5 matches a week) ... so might take too much away from Fox's broadcast deal.

Negotiate?

As others have said, once you're getting ratings in the 30s, there is no negotiating.  The FFA is just praying like hell that Ten continues to take the game live.

FFA has international contracts with Bet365, BT etc but they should be streaming the Saturday night game on Facebook. 1.7 million likes. Lets guess and say 60% are Australian. Thats 1 million people. More than 30k would have contact with the coverage during the time the match is on.

Maybe channel Ten/One might get some viewers if they actually run promos that they are showing games?

I've never seen a TV network so negligent in the promotion of their own product (outside of the infamous Ch7/NSL situation).

Does the fact that this is the most lacklustre season in HAL history not play a part? Or the fact that FFA has done zero marketing? And the clubs all have a very, very limited marketing budget. And many clubs, including some of the bigger ones, have been absolutely rubbish this season.

These elements can't be excluded when looking at ratings.

Why would people watch the HAL when they don't know games are on and the league has zero public profile this year?

We need clubs to sign some marquees, generate some hype, and advertise across all mediums next season. You can't solely rely on members and those who've already been to games to just know when a game is on and attend or watch on tv.

As a West Aussie, matches start at 4:50pm.

Saturday matches, I'll watch if I'm home.
When the FTA matches were on Friday - I *might* catch the last 20 minutes of a game if I get home in time and remembered to turn on.

I realise WA is a small % of the Australian market, but I definitely prefer Saturday matches on FTA.

I definitely saw some impressive adverts to the Saturday matches earlier in the season.
I don't watch that much FTA TV, so I cant say how often they ran, or if they still run them, but the adverts were the "high adrenaline" style adverts, pumping up the match in the same manner as they do for the BBL.

You realise TEN paid ZERO DOLLARS for "their own product" in the first place, don't you?

Yep. THAT'S how much TEN valued the HAL before they started showing it.

I wonder how highly they value it now?

That's right. It takes years of study and 2 years placement to know the A League is played on weekends starting October

Ive found myself going to bed early Saturday evening sleeping through the A-League and getting up to watch Bein and Optus Sports.

I wonder how many do the same? There isn't much Euro football on Friday nights.
