Having watched news coverage of the opening game of the NRL season convinces me more of the need for A League clubs to play at smaller venues than our clubs currently use ATM. As I am not a Rugby League fan, I don't know where this game was played, but the ground looked full of supporters on every side. However I have noticed the attendeance was only 14,457. Having this size crowd at a small venue benefits the game for TV coverage purposes as well as providing a much better atmosphere than the same attendance at a 30,000 to 60,000 stadium.

Australian construction costs are quite high compared to overseas. Especially in specialised building sectors, such as sporting stadia. That means to get bang for your buck and 'future-proof' you're better building a stadium thats a little too big than one thats the right size or too small.
We should be building 25-30k stadia, but wiht an ability to 'section off' the top tier a la MLS. It actually works out cheaper than building a 15 k stadium and then coming back to enlarge in 10 years time.

Crowds are going down not up, even the so called best team the A-League has seen Sydney Fc only average 15k and thats with the derby numbers included, take away that it will be even lower. We have enough big stadiums already for matches like the grand final and derbies,  25-30k is still too big when the majority of teams now and any coming in will still only average 8 - 15k  or even less on a good day.

The MLS seem to have it bang on point with solid stadiums ranging from 18000 to 25000 generally.
Have a quick look online and you see grounds like
Philadelphia, Kansas, Orlando and Vancouver which is exactly what we should be aiming for.

It makes me wonder if NRL sides are desperate for their suburban stadiums to be upgraded that they get on board with the FFA and NPL clubs and try and either get expanded clubs or second div clubs on board.

@pickle

i was in🇨🇭 last yr and wanted to go to a shopping centre. When I got there I saw a stadium on top.

My club plays on top of a entertainment area and has CarPark under but the Swiss one had multilevel a up and down from the street.

Do think we should start building better relations with the rugby to lobby government for upgrades or smaller sized stadiums. There are a lot of shared interests that are hindered by petty thinking on both sides.

The ultimate back stab, they build all these boutique rectangular stadiums. Their game dies, we take over

I would love for the A-league clubs to have their own 15k seater stadiums, and in some cases even smaller 12k seater stadiums.
Especially Wellington they should build a 6k seater stadium, surely that wouldn't cost too much, and they could even nearly sell out the big games 😂😂
All jokes aside even Wellington games were great to watch when they played the 3 games at the temporary 9k capacity stadium.
It makes a huge difference for tv viewing and also a greater match day experience for those at the game.

The Phoenix owners were prepared to spend up to $23million a few seasons back on a new stadium in Petone with the local council putting up the remaining $25million. The lack of a 20yr licence like the other clubs at the time meant the 'Nix didn't push the plans and it petered out:

I agree but aleast it is a great stadium for football view wise.
Imagine how bad it is for Wellington fans playing in an oversized shit cricket stadium.
Luckily as a Wanderers fan it's for 3 seasons.

Suncorp is great when it's got an appropriate crowd, of course.

Weren't they talking about dividing curtains or a draped ceiling to close off the bottom teir? There are venues in Australia that can achieve this with the press of a button.

The new stadium in Atlanta has exactly that to cover the top tier for MLS, but they've been such a success they haven't used it yet:

I can't believe it can't be done, retractable curtains could be rigged off the bottom cord of the roof truss to cover the top two tiers perfectly, but I do believe that nobody cares enough to get it done.

The stadium size is limited by the size of the football pitch

We could have 4 seats around a bucket and fans will be close to one another but it would be impossible to play football

Therefore each rectangular stadium is going to be the same size. The only difference is whether there is a seat behind the fan, a wall or nothing

In terms of proximity to other fans, you can accomplish the exact same thing by closing off stands as you can by not having stands. But you cant accomplish the same thing as having seats with grass or having people sit in air

Spending millions of dollars on reducing the seating capacity of venues for games with low interest when ticketing software could cost a few hundred dollars seems like such a waste
