A-League: Brisbane Roar captain Matt McKay says winning back fans to club could take some time
October 12, 2015 9:00pm
MARCO MONTEVERDEFOOTBALLThe Courier-Mail

BRISBANE Roar won their first game of the season, but skipper Matt McKay concedes there’s still plenty to do to win back the hearts of the club’s fans.

Having missed the Roar’s first-up 3-1 away win over Western Sydney last Thursday because of Socceroos commitments, McKay is eager to contribute when Brisbane host Central Coast Mariners at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday.

McKay is just as keen for a sizeable home crowd, but admits he isn’t expecting the fans’ off-season disenchantment with the financially embattled club to magically disappear on the back of one victory.

“It’s a bit of an unknown really, getting out to Suncorp (Stadium) and seeing how many people we get,” McKay said on Monday.

“I want a good crowd. We’ve had so much success this past five years … but we did so much damage (in the off-season).

“It’s going to be a slow process. We’re not going to go straight to having everyone back on side … but good support really helps us. I think we’ve got some great fans.

“It was a really positive start last week and that hopefully increases our crowd and support. If we keep working hard on and off the field, we can slowly bridge the gap and be back to where we should be.”

McKay watched the first half of the Roar’s win on a laptop computer in Amman hours before the Socceroos’ shock 2-0 loss to Jordan, and was impressed with what he saw on the small screen.

“It was obviously a disappointing result (for Australia) over there but a really good result for us (Brisbane) on Thursday night,” he said.

“Typically we do start the season really well. You saw last season when we didn’t start well how much it affects our overall position at the end of the season.”

The Roar lost their first four matches last season, with coach Mike Mulvey sacked just six weeks into Brisbane’s failed title defence.

“Points on the board early is important, but we’ve got to get our performances right,” McKay said.

“We know it’s a 27-game season. It’s a real positive start. We played some good stuff but we’ve also got a lot to improve on.”

Former Socceroo Jade North didn’t train on Monday for the second session in succession, with the Roar desperate to have him fresh and fit for Sunday in the ongoing injury-enforced absence of fellow central defenders James Donachie and Luke DeVere.

Sunday’s match is part of a double-header, with the Roar’s W-League team kicking off their season against Canberra United in the early match.

Correct. He looked good in training the other day but as he didn't get a proper preseason it's likely to be a few weeks yet. My guess is a home debut off the bench in the Adelaide home game.

There's clearly a major improvement in local media on the go; in addition to paid advertising on the radio this week (and some TV advertising from the HAL ) there's been several positive articles in the Mail, we made ABC news on the radio yesterday including an interview with Broich, and both 7 and 10 TV news with video of the team in training yesterday. Something's changed, we normally go unnoticed on local media!

Ange and Mike had both failed previously so what if JA doesn't fail at Roar ? :)

Also at Heart - weeks before the season started JA was unlucky enough to have his marquee break his leg and the Board sold five of his best players to "save costs" which probably affected his overall management performance (and at least the Bakries have invested in our squad and not sold players to cut costs!!)

If you are a genuine Roar fan I'd recommend getting a ticket for Sunday's game, go and have a look and see for yourself and make s judgement on what you see there and not what happened in Melbourne 2 or 3 years ago. MacLaren and Corona alone look to be worth the admission fee. Give it a go, Roar might just surprise a few people this season - and its more likely if fans back them!

Absolutely. You can't tell me his thoughts will not be diverted or maximum attention to the team will be afforded. I would have thought time with the team just before and after a game is important eg debriefing. As a player imagine what their thoughts would be, "oh, he's off doing something else". Nice.

The post-game interview of the coach and a player from each team is required as part of the broadcast agreement with Fox. He will be doing the interview and presser regardlass of results after every single game. Just like every other coach. It just happened that the Fox boys were set up pitchside rather than in a media box. Relax.

But before the game? And afterwards straight to the studios on totally unrelated matters? Yes, post match interview is a requirement and fine but the rest is too much me thinks.

Ross did the before game and half time spots from memory.
Socceroos was 4 hours later (hardly immediate).
Boys would have warmed down, had a quick chat then been on their way back to the hotel/airport.
Proper game relfections and analysis would have happened after the coaching staff rewatched the tape and had a film session with the team.
What do you expect him to do? Sit them around for a 2 hour post-game meeting? The Socceroos suddenly have a regular weekly fixture we need to worry about? Its not like he took off to Jordan for 4 days.

Show that he is totally committed to the team and his job at the club. He obviously hasn't improved in sports psychology.

Are you having a laugh?
Why are you trying to wind up your own team's supporters?
Fucking hell Pauly.

Winding up? Maybe its affected you.
I think so far so good with JA this is just not a major issue but on invitation to the below I gave my thoughts.

Roar membership update:

Full season members are 4,808 (v about 6,000 last season)
Lite memberships are still 0 (v about 6,500 last season)

I can't understand why the 9 other HAL clubs have managed to get their lite versions selling and Roar haven't, I know the Adelaide chairman was complaining about Ticketek and suggesting the HAL should consider going it's own way in future, at the forum they said it was due to technical issues (with Ticketek?), cost and resources (the last two presumably the clubs issue??)

When there's issues at the club, people moving around or coming and going it easily puts the schedule out resulting in delays and lack of decision making. Nothing surprising here.

Good to read about Aloisi being seen as so positive and detailed in his approach. Broich played below par last game and should pick up his form on Sunday.

Brisbane Roar star Thomas Broich credits resurgence to new coach John Aloisi
October 13, 2015 9:40pm
Brent RowThe Courier-Mail

THOMAS Broich has issued an ominous warning to the rest of the A-League, claiming the Brisbane Roar are improving rapidly under new head coach John Aloisi.

Buoyed by a 3-1 win over Western Sydney in last Thursday’s season opener, the star playmaker credits Aloisi’s regimented approach to training and tactics for the Roar’s consistent improvement.

“You could see throughout pre-season that we slowly but surely just got better and better,” Broich said.

“Sometimes you need a little luck and we got that against the Wanderers too, but once we scored the goals I reckon we played some really good football.

“The new system really started to work well so they couldn’t really put us under too much pressure, there were a lot of positive signs.”

Aloisi was a controversial appointment to the Roar, following his difficult tenure at the head of Melbourne Heart in his only previous head coaching role. However, Broich heaped praise on the former Socceroo for bringing a thorough and professional attitude to the club.

“He came really, really prepared. He’s got a plan for every situation there is in a game of football. And it’s easier then for us to know what he expects and to actually put into place what we’ve been working on,” Broich said.

“We’re improving every day now, and I put that down to his overall vision and his preparation for every single video session, conditioning session and training session.”

After an off-season to forget, Broich said the playing group had put the club’s financial turmoil behind them and are focused on improving as a squad.

“We put that behind us a long, long time ago. There is no point in whingeing at all, we can get side tracked … but as players we shouldn’t be overly concerned with all this. Our job is still out here,” Broich said.

Broich failed to finish training yesterday (Tuesday), appearing to leave the field with a lower leg complaint. However, he brushed aside suggestions he would not be fit for Sunday’s match against the Central Coast Mariners at Suncorp Stadium.

Sunday will serve as a double header, with the Roar women opening their W-League season at 1pm against Canberra United.

Fans will be invited onto the Suncorp pitch after the A-League match for a full club photograph with the Roar, W-League and Foxtel Youth League players.

Yeah, I get the people issues. Just given the focus on memberships from the FFA you would have thought there would have been a focus on getting these up for sale as they represented half of last seasons membership numbers! Even if the FFA helped out - they're the ones that set the 125,000 target

From a fan forum last year, Dobson gave approximate figures with around half going to each, and the lite membership packs selling slightly more. No resolution was given on the make-up of the lite memberships (from memory they had at least two options last season - a 7 game pack and a 4??)

FEARS that fan fury could lead to a shockingly low Brisbane Roar home crowd on Sunday have eased, with a five-figure attendance tipped.

Supporters’ anger with Roar owners the Bakrie Group had led to low membership renewals and talks of boycotting games. There was genuine concern only a few weeks ago that the crowd for Sunday’s clash against Central Coast could be similar to the paltry 6148 that attended the Suncorp Stadium clash between the teams last season.

However, membership numbers have increased in recent days on the back of an encouraging fan forum with Roar coach John Aloisi and Brisbane’s first-up 3-1 away win over Western Sydney last Thursday night.

Ticket sales in the 24 hours between Monday night and Wednesday night were strong and suggest that a crowd of more than 10,000 will be at Sunday’s game, the second match of a double-header that starts with a W-League battle between the Brisbane women’s team and Canberra United.

The Roar are hopeful of topping last season’s home attendance average of 11,660.

While it’s still too low for Brisbane’s liking and short of the break-even figure, it’s a number the club won’t sneeze at after their tumultuous off season. In further encouraging news for the club, players and staff are set to be paid on time on Thursday in another sign that the Bakries are committed to restoring the Roar’s financial credibility.

Further talks are expected to take place on Thursday about David Pourre becoming the club’s permanent chief executive officer. Pourre has held the position in an interim capacity after former managing director Sean Dobson walked out on the embattled Roar in May.

Discussions are also continuing with a host of local identities as the club bids to form an advisory board and appoint directors once an audit is completed this month.

Former Roar defender Josh McCloughan’s official addition to the club’s coaching staff is set to be ratified within days.

McCloughan, who worked with Aloisi in the off-season, is set to replace John Sime as coach of Brisbane’s National Youth League team.
