+x+x+xGeria has been quite good when Franjic has been injured, but with Hingert's arrival I think Geria might have to be content with a youth contract (if he's eligable, not sure though) or as a squaddie. Hingert and Jurman were fantastic against the Ipswich XI but it was an invitational side so I think they'd have been easier to break down given they'd have had much less time to gel as a unit. The Rochedale game will be a much sterner test of how well they are going. Looking forward to tomorrow nights game, especially to see the Bahrani trialist. If he performs I've got no doubt Ange will snap him up with the Asian player requirement covered for the ACL as a bonus. Just waiting on the arrival of a striker and we'll be all set to go back-to-back \:d/ https://www.a-league.com.au/news/brisbane-roar-v-western-united-fc-match-preview Funny when reading that report I remembered how Jurman was hounded out of the club by some “passionate “ fans. There’s a long list of players that have been “hounded” by Roar “fans”. Sadly it’s a thing.

+x+xFor possession statistics they should subtract back passes from forward passes to give a more meaningful idea of what is going on. I was wondering if anyone ever bothered to add up a team's forward metres and subtract their backwards passing metres what sort of figures we would be looking at. It would not be meaningful on its own because hoofball would generate a huge forward distance as they booted it upfield and the opposition brought it back. For a heavy possession game it would be quite neutral as they would be subtracting their back passes from their forward distance. I just think it would be an interesting stat to compare across teams and games purely for the sake of a different perspective. There’s a whole lot of stats either not released or just not calculated. And those that are either the easy ones (FFA website) is the basic Opta data. Beyond that theres a real data mine of interesting stuff, saw this one on twitter for the entire English league system: https://experimental361.com/category/tables/

+xI’d take “attitude” to be honest ... no thanks ..when any club gets rid of the league's top scorer for "attitude" that is a very telling sign .He must be a nightmare . I'd rather come last .

I know what you mean, but a bit of attitude fronts hurt - Berisha, Broich both had it. Get the feeling we’ve been lacking in that department for quite a few years with only Eric coming close

If we are looking for a playmaker, then the most obvious player is Brattan, who i believe is out of contract and would probably open up some cash for Ninkovic. The only problem with Bratts is he is past his best, slow and normally plays deep. If we have JOS,then presumably the playmaker will,be play more on the wing. We certainly need a plamaker. But thats just the start.

But turned us down for Turkey in the winter

Not seen Mcgeady recently but he was fantastic at both Celtic and Spartak. Can take a player on and add something different from the current aimless cross/passes and inability to take a player on. Even now he would likely be Brisbane's best player and add value.
Not sure on the wage bill.

Why have we never fully committed to getting in a big marquee? Over the years we have seen the likes of Honda at Victory, Del Piero at Sydney, Ono at WSW and even Newcastle with Heskey. When will it be our turn to get a big marquee that will hopefully bring crowds and the x-factor back? Who do you think is a realistic target in the near future?

Im not sold on the marquee strategy but Roar and the league generally need to do something next season as we are locked in to a League-wide terminal decline

DP not only got crowds in but SFC had record merchandise sales, captured the media's attention and propelled the A-League like nothing else before. Dwight York was probably the next best marquee, not so much with pulling the same crowds though. Ono and Honda? I only wish we had someone like them in our team right now!

Marquee player or not, what we do need is a star player to turn up and watch. It's no surprise Roar were most successful when we had a star player in Broich. If only we could have kept Berisha ,when FFA enforced the MV leg up rule.We might still be a force today.
So in my opinion every team needs a star play to build a team around.Naturally that star player would get marquee wages. It's just looking at things differently. You dont get the high profile name because he has a high profile name. You get a high quality player and either he already is a high profile, player or he becomes high profile because of his quality.
Unfortunately too many clubs build a team the wrong way.Yes Roar has done it since Broich finished up.

But the thing is the second time he came that season, those same people never came back, most probably haven’t since - meanwhile didn’t SFC miss out in finals that year?

And yeah, imagine not losing Berisha because the FFA has stupid marquee rules!! Every good team has 1 or 2 players that the rest revolve around. Roar are missing those, I wonder whether Eric would have fitted in this side? Fowler seems to have written him off after that last home game with that ludicrous penalty - I certainly wouldn’t mind seeing Eric tearing down the left wing right now.

No , let’s play a Centre half there instead Eric was brilliant just very highly strung something the “stiff upper lipped”poms dislike however he would have had a go and got stuck in. Eric played hard for JA not sure if many would do same for Fowler.

SFC were still watched by an impressive audience. Not many marquees increase the attendances like DP did but they did raise the standard and in particular interest in the A-League. This is what we are currently lacking more than anything.

I'd be a lot less harsh on Bobbie if he mans up and admits failure on his Royal Brigade of British Duds. Won't happen. He doesn't want to lose face as a first-time coach and Liverpool legend

He doesn't want to lose face as a first-time coach and Liverpool legend what would you like him to say? "I failed. I, Bobbie Fowler, am a failure because I severely underestimated the quality of the league and overestimated the quality of my Royal Brigade of British Duds and Scott Neville and Jake McGing. I will now play Dylan Wenzel-Hall as our main striker because he's only the one that has shown any type of ability and goal scoring prowess that isn't a penalty. Now the club will release these duds and recruit better players from quality leagues better than bottom of League Two." Or something to that effect.

He doesn't want to lose face as a first-time coach and Liverpool legend So you want him to publicly tell the players that he is locked into coaching at least until the end of the season, that he thinks they're trash and not fit to do they job he hired them to do? I'm sure that would improve their performance.

I think there is implicit in that figure the acknowledgement of the poor quality of the squad, and that changing manager with these players would simply be changing deckchairs on the veritable titanic.

I think (as a fan base) were always slow to move against coaches. Even Aloisi got time. Ots like “The Ghost of Coaches Past” with that Mulvey Out banner lol.

I would be one to give Fowler more time even if he f*cked up with his recruitment big time. He can make amends. It's approaching his last chance. This next transfer window will show what he's made of. If he fails to swing the axe in at least a couple of places and inject better quality, then he should be sacked. Having said that, I blame the club, starting with the owner and down as to why we are in this ridiculous predicament. We need a new owner.

I work closely with the club on various aspects and I can see no evidence that the Bakries are actively engaged in the direction the club is taking. Mind you, WSW have engaged owners and find themselves in a similar predicament so maybe it’s not that - just as long as they pay the bills. When Mulvey left it marked the lowest point for this club - despite his championship win behind the scenes was in turmoil, the club was in debt to numerous organisations including ATO, QRU, Suncorp Stadium, the FFA plus numerous local suppliers. The crash came a year later with the 2015 financial crisis - that was the time for the FFA to act but we all know they bottled it. Dobson-Pourre-Cobb-Kingsman-Pourre has been 5 CEO’s in 4 years. And only two were any good (Kingsman R.I.P. and Pourre). This is Season I think we’ve paid for that with no recognised marquees - Roar regularly spent $1.25m+ on two marquees until this year when we’ve none (although it sounds like they are using the exemption rule to at least up spending). The move to Dolphin was another cost cutting measure and will likely leave the financials better off by $750k. I can only see more games there next season. Commercially though Roar are doing really well - they have a record number of commercial partners and record revenues (apparently) - that shows how messed up the club was when they were champions in three out of four seasons and they couldn’t convert that commercially. What this all means for Fowler in this transfer window is anyone’s guess - mine would be the Bakries have financial targets on the club which will limit Fowler’s ability to spend so any new players coming in will have to be balanced by players leaving. We can only hope. But thankfully I still maintain he doesn’t need much - two good midfielders will probably do it.
