What are you talking about "hurting the Game"? "The Game" is FOOTBALL and football is THE MOST POPULAR sport in Australia - across every age group, across both genders, across all socio-economic groups and all ethnicities.

A multi with it's two heads to use and it still can't get it right.
I suppose someone has to turn off the multiple dribbles.

- The amount of registered netball players in your state alone is double that of the total male & female registered football players. And you didn't know that? Amazing!
In SA in almost triple that of all M/F reg. football players.
In other states it's close to or a high proportion of the total M/F reg. football players.
It's Australia wide reg. netball player numbers are approximately 70% of the national total of M/F reg. football players.
It's the highest participation sport of Australian females by a country mile. Nothing comes within coohee.

Official figures available on each relevant state netball association and football federation.

Also, you have either excluded the indigenous community from Australia or your claiming something laughable.

Quote:

Does anyone actually play T20, apart from the professionals?

perhaps you should wait for the answer to the above question before making a clown of your self below

Quote:

If not then we can say T20 is not a legitimate sport but its a circus/carnival event that will come to town once a year. Big deal.

As is a normal part of my work throughout the summer season, I had to attend 5 local T20 games last weekend, in two different country towns and until rain washed them out, was to attend 2 more midweek T20 games on Australia day and the evening prior plus 3 more this weekend.

Most, if not all cricket associations, be they bush, regional or city based, play T20 comps throughout their seasons in conjunction with regular 40 over ( or other) matches. We also, infrequently, play 2 day matches.

Actually, because of the limited time normally available in regular club cricket, usually just an afternoon of play and on fields without lighting, limited overs have been the norm rather than the exception since Adam was a boy.

Now I've corrected a couple of your assertions and answered one of your questions, the multi can state in multiples, how anti football i am for doing so.

Perhaps the multi could broaden it's horizons so it will be aware of the multitude of traditions in it's chosen country.

TBB is like fast food,so it will appeal to the masses, particularly kids who traditionally have the attention span of a gnat.As a cricket fan,I find it boring and friends who are cricket fans ,don't seem to have much interest either. So what does that tell you?Basically it appeals to a new market. Those who don't want to think about their sport, just see constant movement and hype .Will it last? I don't know. But am I worried about it ? No,because cricket has been in decline and needed a lift.Does it diminish my interest in football? No.
It's a totally different sport. What it shows though is that with massive marketing and big names ,you can sell anything if you provide non stop entertainment.Iam sure this form of the game would work even in the US.It's got everything baseball has and much more.
Football is a much more complex game than the average person appreciates.Hence, these people distill everything down to number of goals=entertainment value. That is why it will take time to build fan numbers. They have to be educated.Otherwise each game has to be an event to pique peoples interest.Nothing proves this more than the appeal of the Socceroos during the last World Cups.Suddenly people who had no understanding of the game ,had an interest. This despite a lot of them not knowing the offside rule or how long each half goes for.
So this tells me FFAand the football community have to work hard to get to the tipping point where football becomes a mainstream sport in the hearts and minds of Australians.

Socceroos get shit crowds these days due to a 3 big reasons
1 - Play against bad teams all the time
2 - Bad Choices of game days (Which AFC and FFA can't help)
3 - How many of the socceroos play in the a-league?

Even talking about changing the rules of football to appeal to non-football fans is idiotic. This isn't aussie rules ya know, it's the world game. And I couldn't care less how many people watch 2020 cricket or anything else.

Huge Big Bash TV audiences entice free-to-air networks

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/media/huge-big-bash-tv-audiences-entice-free-to-air-networks/story-e6frg996-1226256696362

Not bad for a plastic competition treated half heartedly by cricket fans. Imagine how big this thing could be if people treated it like americans treat MLB.

Saturday's Big Bash final, in which the Sydney Sixers beat the Perth Scorchers at the WACA Ground, was watched by an average audience of 459,000 on Fox Sports.

It comes also just weeks after a match at the MCG, between the Melbourne Stars and the Sydney Thunder, drew a national audience of 472,000, making it the fourth highest rating program in subscription television.

Fox Sports Chief Executive Patrick Delany said the BBL had been a good subscription product for the network. "Any free to air that wanted to challenge us would find some stiff competition," he said.

Anyone still think that this isn't coming at the expense of the A-league ?? Nobody seems to be itching to grab A-league rights anymore.

The Astra site appears to be down at the moment so no top 10 weekly sports ratings yet. I searched and searched but failed to find last weekend's nsl's paytv ratings to enable posting, so, we'll will be forced to use others as a guide to weekly market position. My apology.

Correct, I just wish they would show a bit more restraint in dealing with the other forum members. The tone they take just make them look like trolls(well Judy anyway)but there is a lot of truth in what they say.

i dont think it gets any easier, the afl channel starts in 2 weeks:?

as i said before the most concerning thing is that live sport is getting beaten out by the kids and entertainment channels....that should not be happening, every other sport on the fox platform either rates at the top or extremelly high, dont understand why ppl arent watching the games.

Part of the reason I got rid of Foxtel (the main one being the long off season) is that I had to fight my kids for the remote every time I watched a game. I was up at a mates place last week and he has the same issue and will probably flick Fox as well. You would be amazed at how much power the little bastards have these days.

you can get another box for $15 extra a month, granted foxtel is overpriced as it is but thats an option, its a legitimate reason, but then again it doesnt seem to affect the BBL ratings regardless of what day/time they are played.

It's clear average crowds and ratings have been on a steady decline since the start of the season. As the season gets close to the finals you would hope thre would be a turn around. However some thought has to be put into arresting this decline.I just get the feeling marketing of the game has dropped off .I hope FFA aren't sitting on their hands just hoping things will improve.I don't think the averages are helped with MV struggling and SFC playing uninspiring football. But it's hard to understand the drop in ratings across the board.
I think there needs to be a focus on raisng interest in the A-League at regular intervals .We have had Big Wed.We probably need more focused events loke this.A super Sat,A full regional weekend.Even a half price weekend and charity weekend.FFA need to keep working at marketing the game.A one off Big Wed is not enough.

I doubt many serious football fans would be proposing rule changes other than the consideration of goal line technology which FIFA have under review anyway but there are lessons to be learned from how the BBL has been marketed and the game day experience enhanced. Some of it doesn't work for football at all, particularly the in game interaction, but we need to pick it apart to learn what we can. Obvious things we need to consider are pre event marketing on FTA and pricing.

Studies have shown that general atmosphere at a game and the overall match day experience etc are major factors in fans attending games while issues like price of tickets and ease of access to stadiums etc are factors in fans deciding not to attend. These are issues that need to be at the forefront of football's thinking and could form the lens we look at BBL's success through.

I can understand the justification for lower crowds midweek, but shouldnt the opposite apply for TV ratings ie - people are more likely to stay at home?

Or am I to understand that people who work are less likely to go to the game but less likely to be at home?

Good questions. Not sure of the answers but my understanding is that ratings aren't particularly good midweek. Maybe Skeptic has some figures. Do the women control the channel changer midweek? ;)

The game was up against the Cricket international game, which was shown on Channel 9.

Overall though, I have noticed a fall off on the free advertising that FoxSports were giving us earlier in the year. Given that the 2 bling teams (MV and SFC) are struggling, and the value of their big singings has been less than maximised so far, their priorities seem to have shifted.

51K isn't too bad though.

A HAL deal would still be quite good at this stage, given the overall increases. One thing that is important to note is that even FoxSports would realise that more $$ would bring the potential for more big name players, more teams and therefore a greater audience and benefits (advertising).

Exactly how much they would pay is a big questionmark, but the content alone is very valuable for them.

As for the BBL, I thought I read that CA did not get much for the rights, but instead went with exposure initially and then bring in the $$ later. CA are expected to lose $24 million over a few years on the BBL, but are looking at the longer term value. Big risk especially if interest in T20 wanes.

I think we are looking in the 45 to 50 million a year range.
