Wasn't there some NRL match last night? What were the ratings?
Newspapers are only focusing on football as usual - NRL totally being ignored.

Really? Where in Melbourne? Gee thats a shock. Brisbane Sydney and Canberra the start of the NRL dominates the sport pages. BTW So focusing on the game self imploding once again while the other sports get to laugh at the sport is something that you think is a good thing??

Excellent figures but only gets traction in 2 Aussie states. Football is the only sport that has Aussie-wide recognition that mimics the spread of the Australian population

Game self-impoloding ??? You wish. A quick lesson for you in Football 1. "The Game" is "Football" and football is the most popular sport in Australia. 2. The pro-football league in Australia is the HAL and the HAL is thriving this season with up trends in: crowds, tv ratings, local media coverage, global media coverage 3. The National Football team is the Australian sports brand with the biggest global footprint. Keep dreamin' buddy.

You keep counting the kids though for your enjoyment. 2. Crowds are up?? Yet are actually averaging less than season one. Being up from last year which were woeful is not something to be proud of. TV ratings are up?? , Yeah like the crowds, they were at the start of the season but are falling every week. 3. Pity Australians( the ones that matter and pay the bills) don't really care anymore.

Sydney play Melbourne Victory in a couple of weeks one of our true blockbuster fixtures and you then get a true indicator of the ratings when competing against the eggballs. You mean preseason. There is plenty of data out there for how our game fairs compared to the AFL and NFL given that the previous 6 seasons had some overlap.

No, I just want people to be realistic about how the sport is actually travelling in this country. If people are writing nonsense, expect to be called on it. Edited by Sirocco: 2/3/2012 05:59:37 PM

If people are writing nonsense, expect to be called on it. And you think that any football fan is going to pay any attention to what you say or think and alter his/her behaviour? You are a funny chap/lass.

Despite the season still being 4 weeks + finals away from being finished, there has already been almost 200,000 more people attend an A-League match this season than season one. So yeah, I'd say that crowds are definitely up from season one...

So yeah, I'd say that crowds are definitely up from season one... Having played 38% more games thus far than the total regular games of the 1st season, I'd bloody well hope so, wouldn't you?

They have done well to stop the downward trend and they will do even better if it can now be stabilised if not a trend of slight but continual improvement. But don't try to con people by comparing total crowds for 84 games and 132. That's just plain silly. Edited by skeptic: 2/3/2012 07:31:15 PM

The problem with the single figure approach is it doesn't tell you: 1/ In season 1 Melbourne played at OP where as in season 7 they play some games at etihad and are a large % of the average 2/ In season 1 we saw blockbuster games like 20k plus in Sydney and Brisbane as well as sell outs in Adelaide and Melbourne. This season neither Sydney or Brisbane have managed 20k So that suggests the season 7 figure is one of a stale a league of mainly core support, riding on the back of a big club that wasn't big in season 1. Which do you prefer again?

Then there is the effect of the Gold Coast crowds which average 500 a game less than the Season 1 basket case the Knights. I would much rather a 10 team competition averaging over 11k a game to an 8 team competition averaging under 11k a game especially when the Season 1 figures are inflated due to the honeymoon effect.

I would much rather a 10 team competition averaging over 11k a game to an 8 team competition averaging under 11k a game especially when the Season 1 figures are inflated due to the honeymoon effect. Actually the Knights had a bigger impact on the average than Gold Coast. A weak team in an 8 team comp is going to have a bigger impact than a weak team in a 10 team comp. Take the Knights out and the average jumps 952. Take Gold Coast out and the average jumps 822 And you didnt take into account the impact Melbourne have had on the crowds. Melbourne make up 19.2% of the crowds (22% if you attribute 18k of the away derbies to them). This means Melbourne is worth 2 teams. In season 1 Sydney was also worth 20% of the crowds but in an 8 team comp this makes them worth 1.6 teams. Finally the "honeymoon effect" cant be substantiated. You cant honestly believe that novelty can last 3 years and sustain 2 lengthy preseasons.

Hopefully browser will behave this time. AFL averages ~35,000 to a game. MLB averages ~30,000 to a game. (MLB = Major League Baseball - US) So if you want to ignore total crowds, and focus soley on averages AFL is doing better than MLB. However, MLB plays a LOT more matches during their season than AFL. Over 70,000,000 people attend the MLB during the course of the season, compared with around 7,000,000 for AFL. Are you seriously suggesting that the 70,000,000 attendance figure should be discounted because it's a "con" due to the MLB having more matches? I'd say that an average of 30,000 a game over the course of 2,420 matches is much more impressive than 35,000 over the course of 176 matches. And similiarly, the A-League having the same average (to within a couple of hundred) is more impressive over 132 matches than just 84 matches. Of course, that's not saying there isn't still plenty of room for improvement. If the A-League could to half of the AFL's average, I'd be pleased. Edited by petszk: 6/3/2012 03:22:49 PM
