Dear Mr FFA,

Re: A new A-League Club for Sydney

Call it what you want, just please don't include "West" in the name of the club. It sounds like shit. Playing in Western Sydney is enough to identify the club as "western". If people are going to complain that SFC is a club for Eastern Sydney just because they play in a stadium to the east of the city, then a team playing in Parra is pretty obviously going to be a team for western sydney. And you know they have to be based at Parramatta Stadium, anywhere else is just plain idiotic.

While I'm on the subject of names, do you think you could lay off the crazy juice long enough not to let this new club be saddled with some focus group driven buzz name? It’s a shame you’ve alienated most of the old clubs in the region, especially the one club with the perfect name “Sydney United” – because that reflects what a western Sydney team should be, a club that everyone can stand behind regardless of ethnic origin. But that won’t work so best stick with something like Rovers, Wanders, Athletic, etc.

Finally, just do it. Get off your arse and start the groundwork even if you don’t have an investor lined up ready to go this week. Your search for a “white knight” reminds me of my children’s fascination with the tooth fairy. Both of them are fictional and hide the real source of the cash.

Get the club up and running now in the way that you want it and In a year or two you’ll be able to sell the licence and recoup some of your costs. And in the meantime you’ll be increasing the value of your core business (the a-league in case you’ve forgotten) and the club will be more attractive to potential investor as an ongoing concern rather than a start-up. If you don’t have the cash right now I’m sure a group with the combined business acumen of yourselves can get a short term loan from somewhere, and seeing as you keep telling us you are negotiating a new TV deal you should have finance companies beating down your door to help out. Unless there is something you aren’t telling us then this seems like a no brainer.

Thanks
Tim

How about just Greater Sydney FC? Not as good but, Sydney Suburbs FC?
I agree is can't have 'West' in the name. Just like some Sydney FC fans who live out west might keep supporting SFC even after the new team comes in, I'd like to think the new team will be able to get fans from all across Sydney.

Shouldn't that read A Sydney Football Club, or at the very least Sydney Swans Football Club?

To refer them as THE Sydney Football Club denotes some form of ownership to the name and or location.

No they were the South Melbourne Football Club and their nickname was the Bloods. But the swan was always their crest.

sydney suburbs fc?

not only does that sound eww, but its misleading. thats making it sound like sydney fc is a team for the city. i definetly dont live in the city and i definetly dont live in west sydney. it takes me a while to get to both and i live in one of sfc's biggest markets.

while i realise why you might not want west in the name, i think there should be some type of difference and for it to be marketed as a west sydney club without actually saying west. someone keeps saying that it should be called cumberland and i think it is a good idea, it is the west sydney area without actually saying west. with good marketing it will be successful.

apparently sydeny rovers did a survey or vote or something and it was clear lots of people didn't want west in the name.

Hey, I'm just thrwoing it out there. It's no worse than some of the half-baked names offered so far. :d
I have no doubt the Rovers research told them to avoid the word 'west'.

The Swans average about 35k when they play at ANZ so the GWS fans plus the theatre goers could well take this unique game to the 45k+ mark. The real issue is how many will go to GWS games without the Swans being the opponent. No one knows really but we will soon find out.

Well, since the company I work for is a sponsor, I know of at least 300 or so people who will be getting in for nuthin'.
Much was made of the 11000 or so that went to the Swans trial match at Rooty Hill last season, but the word on the street at the time was you were a mug if you'd paid to get in.

Hmmm. No response Mr Football? I'm not surprised. Not only will their home ground be in the eastern half of the city but they want to abandon the training venue in Blacktown the government helped fund because to get there was "too much travel". They are already training at Breakfast Point an inner suburb. Greater Western Sydney Fraudsters Club would be a more appropriate name.

''Breakfast Point is a good starting point and a great home base for the club's young players. Blacktown's training facility has been good for first-up headquarters, but the ground wasn't available over the summer and there was too much travel."

What an insult to the people of the west.

exactly. i do think you will find that more future supporters do want 'west' or 'western' in the name. however i think its due to finance reasons, as apparently they are more likely to attract sponsership without west in the name.
