Just throwing out a question, forget how unlikely this for a minute, but say the FFA went ahead and signed Del Piero as West Sydney's international marquee and Lucas Neill as the Aussie marquee with a view to having more leverage come TV deal negotiation time. Do you think having a Del Piero and Lucas Neill in the comp could improve the final amount that the FFA get for the rights?
Del Piero and Lucas Neill can be swapped with any big name players i.e. Cahill and Raul

Not sure about Bridge, going to have to impress in pre season to make starting 11 IMO. His consistency is easily the biggest concern. Dimi on the other hand might come good if given right direction. Maybe Popa could get some promising kids from Crystal on loan? Or even a seasoned vet on loan?

Could be a start I forgot about Srhoj. But you've forgotten VISA players. Also is that the same Younis that played for Adelaide 2 years ago but left?

Posted this somewhere else but probs more relevant here.
------------Covic------------ Elrich-Beauchamp-?????---????? -----------Culina------------ --?????---Hernandez---Sterj-- ----------????-????----------
Bench NSWPL GK Cole
Someone they should seriously look at is Peter Jungschläger, I thought the guy was very good last year and he's still 28. Good solid and creative midfielder, plenty of assists. He would not cost a lot of money and he would already be settled to Australian way of life, they would have less risks with him and high chance of upsides. I also reckon SFC should be looking at him (McFlynn anyone?). He would be my budget signing tip of the year, Jungschläger.
Ante Rozic I think would be someone who could add to squad depth and challenge for a start. Steven Lustica is only playing Croatian Division 2 at the moment. Trent McClenahan as mentioned before but you would think that Shannon Cole and Elrich would be better than him at RB. Panny Nikas 2009/10 NYL player of the year is a Sydney boy and still seems to be playing well for Sutherland.
It's pretty certain that they'll need to find a foreign striker. They could always have to option of bringing back Bruno as I've always thought he is a good player, he will also not ask for a lot of money and there would be a big rivalry there with SFC.
If they were to sign Bruno, Jungschläger, and Hernandez they will at least take out the risk of 3 VISA signings, they can go for a bigger name foreign striker and a winger or LB as those seem to be the positions that Australia lacks depth in.

Possibly. But I reckon he will stay another year and get paid a shitload in Middle East. I would. Too much money to say no to. Just a shit place.

Any chance Neill could sign for WS? we know he was one of the big names pushing hard for the teams inclusion... especially now that the socceroos aleague snubbing is a thing of the past.

nick1408 pretty good summation.
I'd be very surprised if Covic was NOT signed by WS, so that's gotta be a no-brainer. Tyson I imagine will end up @ either Sydney, Western Sydney or Brisbane.
Bridge will still be SFC player next year though as someone already said.
I would think that Hernandez would be more likely to go to WS than Flores as Flores is already contracted and making a shitload of money. He won't be back for at least 2 years.
I reckon you've got the RB's pretty much sorted, I would also possibly add Shannon Cole to that list.
Ljubo would be a fantastic signing but a possibly difficult one regarding squad harmony. That being said the guy seems to captain a lot of teams and imo is definitely the best unsigned Australian CB at the moment. Tough call though as it depends where his head is at. I'd love to see him back though.
I dunno if Chippers will come back, hasn't he said that he doesn't want to already? Happy with his family in Switzerland.
For my mind Culina and Covic are the only "certainties" currently. But I expect Elrich, McClenahan, Beauchamp, Cole, Rozic and possibly Sterjovski to be named by the end of next week.

Good points re Sterjovski and Bridge. I sort of agree with you about the marquees but I think they will need two to be competitive in the first season.

Good range of players available. It will really depend on what sort of team Poppa wants to put together - youth based or not. At the moment he may not have much of a say in the age lineup with available players but I would be looking at a side consisting of the following:
GK Ante Covic (36 years old) Jerrad Tyson (22)
RB Trent McClenahan (27) Tarek Elrich (25)
LB Scott Chipperfield (36) (Australian Marquee)
CB Nigel Boogaard (25) Ante Rozic (26) Ljubo Milicevic (31)/Adam Griffiths (32)- only one of these guys for experience
Central Midfield Jason Culina (31) Marco Flores (26) (Marquee) Andreas Govas (22)
Wide Midfield Mitch Bevan (21) Joel Porter (33)
Strikers Mile Sterjovski (32) Mark Bridge (26)
That's 22 players with the required three under 21 for the 23 man squad. I chose Chipperfield over Carney only because I think Carney would want a lot of money so I don't think the club could or would take both as marquees. Hernandez didn't get a look in as I don't think he would be a good fit and I think Flores trumps him on both age and ability. If Flores doesn't come off the Hernandez would be a great signing but not as a marquee.
A distinct lack of wingers would have me searching Asia firstly for one of the two visa spots I have designated for wide players. Carney would be a good signing here along with Chipperfield as they can swap and change between LB and LW but I think a young Asian winger would suit better.
Anyway, those are my thoughts.

Well, now that West Sydney have sorted their CEO AND Coach, now we can get right down to the nitty gritty of player speculation: Burns_22 wrote:Aaron Mooy- one year deal Dean Bouzanis - 12 game contract coming to an end Danny Invincible- 1 year deal coming to an end Adam Griffiths- free agent Lljubo Milicevic- free agent Shane Cansdell Sherriff-deal coming to an end Matthew Park- 3 year deal coming to an end David Carney- 1 year deal coming to an end Tarek Elrich- free agent Nigel Boogard-free agent *Halloran REMOVED as he's since signed with Roar* Ante Rozic-FFA contract Jerard Tyson-FFA contract
Without a coach who know but some players that could be interesting signings who are off contract or coming off
Interesting list Burns_22 and one month on, AFAICT, still a relevant, worthwhile and realistic list. I'd expect atleast 2-3 returning Aussies Abroad to be making up West Sydney's squad for their debut season. thupercoach wrote:Ex-Adelaide United star Marcos Flores tops list of potential recruits for western Sydney A-League team By Tom Smithies The Daily Telegraph April 06, 2012 8:24AM On the radar ... Flores is reportedly unhappy at his club in China. Source: Bianca De Marchi / News Limited Former A-League player of the year Marcos Flores has emerged as an obvious target for the new western Sydney team, as news of the club's arrival in the competition sent shock waves through the ranks of local players. http://www.foxsports.com.au/football/a-league/ex-adelaide-united-star-marcos-flores-tops-list-of-potential-recruits-for-western-sydney-a-league-team/story-e6frf4gl-1226320279269The gifted Argentine, rated the A-League's finest import before Thomas Broich lit up Brisbane Roar, was nominated by a number of senior figures in the game canvassed since news broke that a western Sydney team would join the A-League next season. Flores, still only 26, is on a lucrative $800,000-a-year deal with Chinese side Henan Jianye, after leaving Adelaide United last season, but is believed to be unhappy in China. So far it is unclear when the new team will start signing players, with Football Federation Australia sensitive to accusations that as the governing body it is also assembling a team's roster. That makes the appointment of a CEO and football director the priority, but it's understood players and their agents are already signalling interest in joining the new side. Other players off-contract domestically include Carlos Hernandez at Melbourne Victory and Issey Nakajima-Farran at Brisbane, both possessing plenty of flair that would attract crowds to the new club. But a number of players who are under contract are also believed to be interested, including Mark Bridge at Sydney FC who has stagnated for the past two years and could seek a fresh start. There are also current Socceroos Mark Milligan and Jade North who, while well established overseas, might be receptive to the right offer given their previous affiliation with the west of Sydney. Mile Sterjovski, who retired from the national team last year, recently moved to China but is believed to have a clause in his deal that could allow him to return in July. But a clutch of players coming off contract are likely to be on a recruitment list for the new club, including Jeremy Brockie, Tarek Elrich and Kasey Wehrman from Newcastle Jets, Kristian Sarkies and Ante Rosic at Melbourne Heart, Pedj Bojic and Tom Rogic at Central Coast Mariners, plus Gold Coast United players such as Michael Thwaite and Jarred Tyson. With the new club anxious to strike a chord across a multitude of areas and cultures, there are players whose attraction goes beyond football, such as Iraqi international Ali Abbas and Brazilian striker Bruno Cazarine at Sydney. Veteran goalkeepers Ante Covic and Clint Bolton are off-contract at the two Melbourne clubs and both have strong connections with Sydney that might tempt them to give the new franchise a year of service. Former Sydney FC defender Jake Timpano and Ljubo Milicevic, released by Hadjuk Split, both offer A-League experience, as does Adam Griffiths, training with Melbourne Victory but so far without a contract. Interesting article, even a month on - Who, as mentioned in the article can be removed? Out of the equation now; Thwaite has since joined Glory, Brockie has signed with the Phoenix, Pedj Bojic has re-signed with the Mariners, Milligan is surely not in the equation in good form with promotion chasing JEF United. Any more talk of Flores? Would be interesting if he's still keen to leave China... He would certainly not be short for interest here. Hernandez has since been released by Victory and again, would be logical to chase him. I didn't know Canberra boy Tom Rogic was available, is he still? Surely the Mariners have re-signed him? He may have offers from overseas though. One more season starring in the A-League may be in his best interests though? Ljubo Milicevic is an interesting one as always, he's certainly available, it's up to whether both Popovic and also he would be interested. Adam Griffiths Sutherland Shire boy, but would be a good get too. Jacob Timpano is a Wollongong boy, but maybe worth a look at, but so would be some other West Sydney based NSWPL boys you'd think. Ante Covic would have to be a logical pick up, though IF Bolton is still available (Have Heart re-signed?) then he would be too - Plenty of options in the Goalkeeping ranks for West Sydney, no surprise. Abbas, Tarek Elrich, Wehrmann, Sarkies are all still available. So are former GCU players stil available like CB Ante Rozic (Who's a Blacktown boy too), Joel Porter, Taj Minniecon, Dylan Macallister, Mitch Bevan and Mitch Cooper. Michael Beauchamp and Shannon Cole available aswell. Indeed, Jason Culina would be a great pick up, even on some kind of short term, conditional contract to begin with. Mark Bridge and Popovic were team mates and it's possible Poppa may give him a second chance. If anybody can help revive Bridge's career, it could be old team mate Poppa? The change of scene (Back to his hometown in the west), and away from the pressures of SFC, could do Bridge some good? I didn't know about Mile Sterjovski, he's a Wollongong boy but still in his early 30s would be another star capture for the team. He may be a bit cheaper too than his Glory days, being that bit older and considering 'his stock' dropped a fair bit during his Glory spell. Trent McClenahan is also available - he was an injury replacement player for the Mariners in the ACL recently. The RB's a West Sydney boy too, from Liverpool. Surely Poppa would give experienced but still youngish player a look in. Anyway, once again, now that Gorman and Poppa have been confirmed, let the speculation over players flood in! We should be hearing of players linked to this club every other day! Edited by gloryperth: 19/5/2012 04:49:01 AM
