Qantas Joeys in Group B for AFC U-16 Championship Friday, 11 May 2012 11:16 AM

The Qantas Joeys have been drawn with Iraq, Oman & Thailand in Group B for the AFC U-16 Championship 2012, which will be held in Tehran, Iran from 21 September to 6 October.

The draw was conducted in Tehran by Shin Man Gil, the AFC Director of National Team Competitions.

The Qantas Joeys were seeded in Pot 1 as the fourth ranked team in the competition along with host nation Iran, DPR Korea and Uzbekistan, by virtue of their placing at the 2010 edition of the tournament.

Qantas Joeys Head Coach Alistair Edwards is excited about the challenges his squad will face as part of the upcoming campaign.

"The standard of youth football throughout Asia has risen considerably over the past decade, there are no longer any easy games, which I think is a positive development”, said Edwards.

"At the recent qualifying tournament (for the AFC U-16 Championship) we lost to Thailand (2-3) so that gives you an indication of how competitive it is going to be to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.

"Each of the groups have quality teams and each country will be travelling to Iran with the objective of qualification.

"Having said that Group C looks particularly strong with four traditional powerhouses who heavily invest and recognise the importance of providing opportunities for the players and coaches to develop.

"The situation with the draw means that two high quality teams will not even make it out of the group stage.

"It’s now down to narrowing our focus on selecting the tournament squads, not an easy task with such a good base of quality players.

"I am very happy with how the Qantas Joeys program is going, the regular weekend camps have been excellent. Getting to work with the players every three weeks has enabled the players to bond on and off the park and for Tony and I, in conjunction with a great group of NTC coaches to monitor them closely through regular contact.

"We can't wait to start playing the upcoming high quality international games to continue our development, the countdown to Iran has begun and we can now look at who we will be playing in more detail,” concluded Edwards.

The Qantas Joeys will prepare for the competition by competing at the ASEAN Football Federation U-16 Preparatory Tournament in Vientiane, Laos from 2-8 June and will then travel to Saudi Arabia for a tournament in late July before heading to South America in August for an altitude training camp in Bolivia where they will play 5 friendly matches against quality local opposition.

The top two teams from each group of the AFC U-16 Championship 2012 will progress to the knockout stage (quarter-finals) and the four winners of the quarter-finals will then play in the semi-finals with the winners advancing to the final.

The semi-finalists will also automatically qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup, which will be held in the United Arab Emirates in late 2013.

This is a point made by many stakeholders.

Many Asian teams are quickly improving. Yet in Australia we have media pundits who simply expect us to beat anyone in Asia pretty easily.

Ten NSW based players selected in Qantas Joeys squad
22.05.12 18:15

Qantas Joeys coach Alistair Edwards
Ten NSW based players were recently selected to be part of the Qantas Joeys squad bound for the ASEAN Football Federation U16 Preparatory Tournament in Vientiane, Laos from 2nd to the 8th of June 2012.

Qantas Joeys Head Coach Alistair Edwards has selected a 20-player squad with New South Welshmen Darcy Madden (Figtree), Aaron Calver (Helensburgh), Kevin Ly (Liverpool), Steve Kuzamnovski (Mortdale), Liam Rose (Mt Pritchard), Lawrence Hanna (Condell Park), Alex Gersbach (Yowie Bay), Joshua MacDonald (Farmborough), Lukas Stergiou (Mangerton) and Bright Appiah (Kensington) all part of the squad.

The Qantas Joeys will play three matches in the four-nation tournament against Japan, Laos and Thailand.

Following last week’s draw announcement for the AFC U-16 Championship 2012, Edwards is using this tournament for competitive match experience and to blood some younger players.

“We are really looking forward to this opportunity to gain much needed International football experience,” said Edwards.

“I have always admired the way in which Japan approach the game and Laos & Thailand have improved greatly in the past few years at youth level.

“During the last few training camps the focus has been on identifying the players that best suit our style of play and I’m pleased to see that our young Australian footballers have adapted well.

“Tony and I have been mindful of the Relative Age Effect and this squad is reflective of this. Some really promising younger players have caught my eye and as such, in line with the national long term player development philosophy, there are five 1997 born players included in this Australian-based Qantas Joeys squad, the youngest being Lawrence Hanna who is 14 years old.

“We have a 12 game international program leading up to Iran (AFC U-16 Championship) and the experience gained in Laos, Saudi Arabia and Bolivia will provide an excellent platform for the players to develop,” concluded Edwards.

The Qantas Joeys will assemble in Canberra on Sunday (27 May) for a short pre-tournament training camp before heading to Laos next Wednesday.

Football Federation Australia would like to thank the AIS for their ongoing support for this training camp & tournament and the Qantas Joeys Football Program.

The fact that none of those players are contracted to an A-League club is both unsurprising and sad.

Academies are needed, full stop.

It's kind of hard actually as this age range is 14-15 and so a year or two too young for even the NYL sides. As too, a number of the boys being in the AIS or State Institutes, it reflects that they will graduate through there, or atleast spend a bit more time there, before a few of them joining A-League clubs, just like those before them.

So again, Draupnir I think you have the generations confused, IF we were talking the U18/19s with the next Young Socceroos squad, then I'd fully concur if the squad if this were the case for that squad. But odds are that squad will not only have a number of NYL/A-League boys, but some of them will be already featuring/starring in the A-League now, like Terry Antonis, Jake Barker-Daish, Curtis Good, Mitch Cooper, Josh Brillante, Jacob Melling, Jesse Makarounas, Adam Taggart and the like as too hopefully European based boys like Musti Amini, Corey Gameiro, Jamie McLaren and the like.

Those are all logical selections that Okon and co will opt for. But there may be even better, especially in Europe and here's hoping the 'European based scout' for the FFA, Stu McLaren, finds them!

For sure, I understand the problem/advantage/disadvantages that being 14-15 years old poses to both the clubs and the players wanting to be signed, simply because the NYL is the only real option these guys have at the moment.

When I said academy I was meaning from ages 10+ or so, not actually being signed simply to a professional club. Didn't mean that it's bad for our national side or bad for the players that they are either at an institute of sport or a semi pro club, more so that the professional clubs are lacking :)

Teeboy is a 96 born ( apparently ) so he is eligible for the current Joeys. Im not sure of the rulings over whether a player can play in concurrent Youth World Cups though!!! Bright Appiah who is listed in the squad above did not make the trip to Laos. Not sure why, possible injury. I know this because my son has been training with the AIS for the last week under Ufuk Talay and Bright did not train. Although he did not seem injured.
Good luck to the boys in the tournament in Laos, hope they gain the experience needed for the up coming Asia Cup/World Cup qualifiers.

Age wise he is absolutely eligible, the question is what the rules are on consecutive WC representation at this age group.

Bright is a talented boy, seen him play futsal out our way, hope he goes well, would love to see SFC sign him into the NYL squad.

Best of luck with you boy btw! :)

I guess they need to keep him in the U20 stream then. Even if he doesn't make ther final team. And he'll be perfect age for 2015 U20 WC.

Thanks for that VoR - It will be interesting to see how the overseas boys or how many, how often, will be used during qualification with the Young Socceroos particularly. Understandably, at U16 level, I presume it's best not to disrupt them in Europe, but as 17/19 year olds I'm sure there are a number over there who would be willing to come over, if called upon. I'd love to see the number pushing half a dozen or more for most of the Young Socceroos' qualifiers, or the key ones atleast.

Also - I actually think it's for the best, especially after what we saw with the Olyroos. The difference in quality a Corey Gameiro, hopefully fit and firing again Dylan Tombides and the like can bring, can literally be the difference between a positive result and 0-0 draws or worse. We can't afford to slump it in selection this time. That's one thing Versleijan did well - he selected alot of Euro boys right through and that's what helped the Young Socceroos qualify through the AFC - overseas boys like Bulut clearly made a difference, as did Tombides with the previous Joeys gen. There may be a good, more creative midfielder about too - But in saying that Musti Amini is STILL about - still young enough to qualify for the Young Socceroos once more - He'll surely set a new record for all time Young Socceroo caps by the end of his spell (Maybe our version of James Milner and his 40 somoething caps for England's Under 21s rofl)! lol

The gap at this age between countries is not as big as the older age groups so a 3-2 win is not bad. Laos beat Thailand too

Joeys boss hails new generation

5 June 2012-SBS EXCLUSIVE: Philip Micallef

Optimistic ... Alistair Edwards believes Australia's next generation has the talent to succeed

The doom and gloom surrounding the future of Australian representative football is misplaced and completely unjustified, Australia Under-17 head coach Alistair Edwards declared.

Recent failures of several national representative teams have raised doubts over the country's ability to retain its healthy position in the world rankings once the veteran Socceroos stars call it a day.

Pessimism reached fever pitch when Australia Under-23 failed to qualify for this year's Olympics in London.

It will be the first time since 1984 that the Olyroos won't participate in the Games.

But Edwards said that the current crop of up-and-coming youngsters should give the football family plenty of optimism that Australia's reputation as a consistent producer of young talent will not be tarnished.

"I can see at first hand what special young talent we've got in this country," Edwards said from Vientiane in Laos, where the Joeys are taking part in an invitational four-team tournament.

The Joeys have drawn 1-1 with Japan and beaten Laos 3-2 and will face Thailand on Wednesday for a spot in the final.

"I think our young players are on a par with anything I've ever seen," he said.

"But they need more international competition to reach their potential.

"We just have to provide them with the right environment and process which can nurture them into better players, hopefully good enough to play for the Olyroos and the senior national team.

"They are showing a lot of promise and, although it is very hard to pick at this young age, there are a number of guys here who, given the right environment, could end up being professionals and hopefully Socceroos.

"We are getting a great deal of support from the Institute of Sport in Canberra and Football Federation Australia because the only way these boys can improve is to give them more games like we are doing here.

"Every game we play is a learning moment.

"We are looking at each player individually, we're not looking at results but focussing on making the player and the team better.

"I see this as a very challenging role and I feel honoured to be given this opportunity."

The Joeys have a demanding schedule leading to the FIFA Under-17 World Cup.

After their commitments in Laos, the Joeys will travel to Saudi Arabia for another tournament involving Morocco, Korea Republic and Saudi Arabia.

A few weeks after that they go to Bolivia to play four games against South American opponents and will round off the year with the AFC Under-17 Championships in Iran that will serve as qualifiers for the World Cup in the United Arab Emirates in 2013.

National technical director Han Berger has made no secret of his steadfast belief in the 4-3-3 playing formation which he sees as the ideal platform for young players to enhance their general skills.

It is the way the game is played in many countries but are Australian kids capable of adopting this system?

"It is not just Han's opinion but one of the world," Edwards said.

"Most of the teams in the countries I've visited have a 4-3-3 as their development tool.

"Players in Australia can adapt and do adapt and there has been a massive improvement at this level in the last few years because we are focussing on the long-term player development.

"So it's looking good at this stage."

Qantas Joeys make undefeated start
Wednesday, 6 June 2012 8:36 AM

The Qantas Joeys are currently participating in an AFF U16 Preparatory Tournament in the Laos capital Vientiane. On Saturday evening (AEST) the Qantas Joeys played their first match and overnight played the host nation in the second of this four match competition.

The first game was clearly billed as a battle of the heavyweights with the Qantas Joeys drawn to play Japan in the opening match of the tournament.

Played, in mid-30 degree heat and high humidity, the game was an entertaining and skilled affair with both teams creating plenty of opportunities.

Play was evenly poised until the 43rd minute when Miyoshi got in behind the Qantas Joeys defence with a deft flick over his head on the edge of the penalty box, finishing with a scorching shot into the top left corner.

Throughout the first half Qantas Joey Steve Kuzmanovski was a crowd favourite with his electric runs and array of manoeuvres on the ball, beating his opponent on many occasions but the Australians weren’t able to capitalise on their possession in the front half.

Having gone behind just before the break, the Qantas Joeys were clearly a more determined outfit after it, confidently playing out and creating real chances.

Captain Aaron Calver took charge in the key defensive post and, with a variety of slick passing and directed long balls, particularly to left winger Alex Gersbach, the Qantas Joeys looked to be gaining the ascendancy, the difference was the injection of Josh MacDonald up front early in the second half that paid real dividends, contesting well and getting in behind the Japanese defence on a number of occasions.

With only five minutes gone the Joeys capitalised on a set piece from the right when substitute centre back Jack Iredale scored the equaliser from a well weighted ball dispatched into the net at close range on his non preferred right foot, getting a goal on debut.

From that point it was all out attack by both sides with a number of chances going begging. At full time the 1-1 result was a fair reflection of where the teams stood against each other.

“The game provided a great tactical challenge for us with the Japanese midfield movement creating a few issues, particularly in the final 10 minutes of the first half.

“I was particularly pleased with how we were able to adapt to the changing game in the second half and in all, it was a very pleasing first up performance”

Monday night’s game against hosts Laos saw both teams in an arm wrestle for the first half with the Laotian team camped in their own half for the majority of the term, content to let the Qantas Joeys pass it amongst their backs, waiting to capitalise on any mistake.

After the break it was as if Qantas Joeys were fielding a fresh side by comparison. The midfield picked up the tempo, the ball was moved with purpose and the coach’s direction to take the play to their Lao opponents had obviously been heeded. Irrespective, Laos managed to find the net against the run of play to take a one goal lead but this only served to galvanise the Qantas Joeys.

The introduction of Kevin Ly into a tiring midfield and centre back Aaron Calver into the key forward post proved decisive with Kevin scoring the equaliser in the 62nd minute with his grounded shot in heavy traffic unsighted by the Lao ‘keeper.

With the game back in the balance Laos lifted their work rate but were starting to be overrun by the Joeys and this dominance turned into scoreboard advantage when Gersbach’s free from the right was contested in the box and fell to Josh MacDonald who executed a neat scissor kick to find the net from directly in front.

A jubilant Qantas Joeys outfit were deflated only a few minutes later when Laos broke through leaving Spinella no chance of stopping a cracking shot which saw Laos equalise in the 81st minute.

The Qantas Joeys continued to press and had a number of shots denied or miss the mark until Aaron Calver, having not made the most of an earlier opportunity, slot the winner from close range in the 88th minute. The final score, 3-2 to the Qantas Joeys.

“Before the game we made sure that the boys were aware that Laos would sit in their own half waiting for us to make a mistake” said Qantas Joeys Assistant Coach, Tony Vidmar.

“We made things tough for ourselves in the first half. Then at half time we reinforced the importance of patient build up play, increasing the ball speed and how player movement and rotation is important within the system to combat and penetrate their packed defence.”

Football Federation Australia would like to thank the AIS for their ongoing support for this training camp and tournament and the Qantas Joeys Football Program.

In early 2009, the 1994 Joeys under Jean Paul De Marigny beat Japan 3-2 and then drew 2-2 with them at the AIS in a friendly series. I watched these games and the Joeys were really impressive and only poor goalkeeping errors gave Japan 3 of their 4 goals across the 2 games. The AIS squad which was the 1993 players including the likes of Amini and Good beat the Japanese 4-0.

Later that year the Joeys beat Laos 7-0 and 6-0 in the qualifiers for the AFC Championship.

Nice to hear they made the final. And yeah, as some of you said, the differences are supposedly smaller at this age level. I remember too, not so long back, when Ange was in charge, he mentioned how the Laos team we faced was found to have 'over agers' - Ange was in charge of both the U17s and U20s, so I might be getting confused again - Yeah, I'm fairly sure that was the Young Socceroos (The infamous exchange between Ange and Foster on SBS). That's hardly isolated too - I remember the odd African side has been caught on that too, having players a couple years older.

Anyway, just throwing it out there - You can never be too sure! Maybe that's not the case this time, but who knows how well they clamp down on this? So again, with the variables/possible variables, the boys are still doing well.

Also with Teeboy, it's quite possible he's moved up to the Young Socceroos. And FTR there surely isn't a rule against 2 consecutive U17 World Cups as there certainly isn't for the Young Socceroos, as we've seen Kantarovski, Antonis and the like in 2 U20 generations? Terry Antonis is infact in the present gen Young Socceroos squad too, Amini will probably join up too, at some point - So they will prove so.

I think the limitations actually come with 'concurrently' running tournaments - That's what we saw with a young David Williams back in 05-ish? I 'think' Australia tried to select him for the U17s and U20s, but they couldn't so he featured with the Young Socceroos only (Albeit he only ended up featuring as a marginal squad player, if at all that tournament, iirc? :/).
