It'll be a wonderful day if we ever get dispensaries and a proper commercial cannabis industry in this country...those nat geo documentaries on foxtel are interesting, although some real amateurs in the US mixed in with a pretty exciting scene there that is emerging...once the federal law side of things gets sorted they will be able to raise some serious capital to put into it.

We'd be world leaders in Australia if it came here...experienced and knowledgable user base, good climate for outdoor in some areas. Would save a heap of money in enforcement and incarceration industries although there are a lot of vested interests holding it back. Alcohol and publicans included if the USA experience is anything to go by. The Australia21 report gives some hope though.

Would actually be very positive and wealth creating...a lot of potential as a cottage industry much like wine...along with the inevitable corporates that would get on board. Maybe Bluetongue Stadium will be renamed Greentongue one day!

Can you imagine if the hemp industry was revitalized. So much more sustainable than cotton and the rainforest.

There has been an escalation of raids on hydro homes in residential areas...also they have been talking up the threat from fires and also being located near schools and the like.

Some lobby group like Australia21 should be making the argument that this is the perfect reason to have a legitimate commercial industry with some standards at least.

Also helps deal with the organised crime problem that is causing significant spillover on a recurring basis...

There is a theory that just before legalisation, the fuzz will go on a major crackdown to knockout more of the blackmarket operators to clear the way for a legal cannabis industry. Nice way to look at it...unfortunately i think its just more of the same knuckleheadedness from our authorities, tabloid media and politicians...

In a stunning look at the medicinal properties of marijuana use, a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology has found that obesity rates are lowered by roughly one third in those who smoke three times weekly. The research included 52,000 participants, with findings concluding that 22% of those who did not smoke marijuana were obese, compared with just 14% of the regular marijuana smokers.

The “munchies” (increase in appetite after smoking marijuana) are very real. Just ask anyone who smokes marijuana on a regular basis. It’s this “benefit” of increased appetite that makes marijuana an effective treatment for people suffering from the lack of appetite so common with cancer, AIDS, and other diseases. So, how could any study find that marijuana smokers are less likely to be obese?

Two surveys were analyzed for the American Journal of Epidemiology study. Each showed that pot smokers were less likely to be obese. But, before you try and track down marijuana for your next weight loss cure, read on.

There are many potential explanations for the findings. Firstly, as Maia Szalavitz with TIME reports, pot-free people could be substituting food for pot as their “unhealthy” habit. Another potential explanation, that some pot smokers are smoking because they are sick. Diseases like cancer and AIDS often result in a lower-than-normal body weight.

Finally, there’s the explanation that Szalavitz fails to consider: that many marijuana smokers don’t use their recreational drug of choice to gorge themselves at every chance. Perhaps marijuana smokers are cognizant of the fact that smoking causes the munchies and so they act accordingly – maybe allowing some extra indulgence while “high” but reverting to a more healthful lifestyle in between “sessions.”
