ATTN: All Melbourne-ians.

I will be crossing the border, and visiting your unique and interesting country/state/city in December. Will be in town from the 10th December till the 16th, and will be attending the Victory vs Sydney game at Etihad on the 13th, which also happens to be my Birthday - That's basically the reason why I'm coming down, and I've never been to Melbourne.

So yeah, keen to have bevvies with anybody who wants to say hi and meet up. Not so keen to be given the Victory "everything must go" stock-take furniture sale. ;)

Will also be doing a few "touristy" things, as I've never been, and I'm sure there's more to Melbourne than just laneways, cafe's and hipsters so if you lovely folk don't mind telling me what's good to go visit and see, that'll be awesome.

I have never been bored in Melbourne - I can't see how anyone could be. Just walking around the CBD is fun enough, let alone actually doing stuff.

Do you just stay in your hotel room when you go down there?

Sydney doesn't have the same hipster cliques though.

Sydney CBD is just little Beijing.

Depends on what sort of stuff you're interested in and what area you're staying but Moondog Brewery in Abbotsford (close to the city) will be good during summer, they've got a bar area there with some quality beers & they have a different food truck in every night for the food. http://moondogbrewing.com.au/

Hahaha. Not a massive Cider fan, but I can work with it. Cheers for the advice on FB too. :)

Was thinking of heading out to the Split Point Lighthouse - the lighthouse from 'Round the Twist', which was my favourite TV show as a kid. Problem is it's 120kms from Melbourne, on the Great Ocean Road, and I don't drive.

One day definitely going to drive/cycle the Great Ocean Road.

But yeah, keen to check out Crown Casino, St Kilda, etc.

And what's the deal with Trams - you just hop on one and pay onboard? Or do you have to get a pre-paid card?

When I have used the trams I've used a myki - it's like an opal card that you pick up at 7/11s basically on every corner.

But any time I've brought up a myki to a local, they've looked at me strangely which makes me think they have their own form of transport currency or just hop for free.

Need a pre-paid card called a myki, I think they cost $6 and you need to put money on it before you get on the tram. You can buy them and load them up at train stations and some tram stops or at 7/11, then 'touch on' once you're on the tram and they'll take the money off the card

Everyone down here just hates myki.

Also, this will happen to you if you try and hop on for free:

If you're feeling adventurous enough to go west of Melbourne this brewery looks like it would be awesome to visit too. I haven't made the effort to get out there myself but my local occasionally gets a keg of their Taco Beer which is pretty good and the restaurant that did their menu is in Collingwood and their food is awesome

Basically a Melbourne 'Opal Card' - except the Opal Cards in Sydney are free and you just pay for you top ups. Cool. :)

Also are cabs as ridiculously expensive as they are here in Sydney?

I've booked a hotel on Lygon Street in Carlton. Google says it's roughly a half-hour walk to Southern Cross, but are there bus routes/tram routes that go through Lygon Street? Lygon Street is basically Sydney's Norton St, yeah? Little Italy? Decent Food I'm assuming them.

But yeah, keen as mustard now. \:d/

I'm not familiar with Norton St but yeah, it's known as an Italian area so there'll be heaps of restaurants to choose from.

There is a tram line that goes along Lygon St but as you get closer to the city it turns and shifts across a block then runs parallel to Lygon, that'll take you to Flinders St station (you can change at pretty much major intersection and get a different tram down to Southern Cross) then depending on which number tram you get it'll keep going to Chapel St or to Albert Park beach. That reminds me, there is a mint place called Nshry right on Albert Park beach that's well worth checking out, their Umami Burger is so damn good and the location/view is unbeatable. I'd also recommend checking out the rooftop at Naked For Satan (on Brunswick St so it's near Lygon St) they've got a restaurant up there or you can just do drinks/snacks out on the deck but it's a really good spot

And yeah, cabs would be pretty much the same as Sydney I think.

Depending how far down Lygon street you are walking into the city wouldn't be too bad, but you might be lucky and get here after the city becomes a free public transport zone

Heineken,
I live off Lygon St towards the north end of Carlton so I know the area well, it's very easy to get around from there with the city being walking distance from the end in which I assume your hotel will be. If not you can jump on any tram heading down Lygon, or if your hotel is past the tram turn off point it's only a quick walk a block up to the University of Melbourne campus on Swanston St where you'll find heaps of trams.

Cheers mate. I'm staying at the Downtowner Hotel on the corner of Lygon & Queensberry Streets. Had a quick squiz and there doesn't appear to be tram tracks out the front. Either way, it doesn't seem to be very far from anywhere, and like you said I'm sure I'll find a tram that goes near where I want to go.
