Remember what Gallop said - they want a team with a potential fanbase of close to 7-figures. That does potentially exist in South East Queensland, but the population is so spread out that it's hard to figure out where exactly to put it. NRL can do it because they can live off the TV ratings.
Perhaps the answer is to give the team an additional identity beyond mere geography. Maybe go down the Wanderers route and make a distinctly working class team (Logan, perhaps?). I also like the military idea. It's not just the City of Ipswich, people need to incorporate the immediate surrounds and region it covers. THEN that's a larger area, growing ever more! Look at the planned suburb of Springfield for instance! This whole area is a rapidly growing corridor between Ipswich and Brisbane/Logan, as part of the wider conurbation in SE QLD! Ipswich = essentially a 'Greater Western/SW Brisbane Metro' team (Incorporating Western parts of Logan and SW fringe of Bris Metro within it's 20-25km radius) and geographically, population distribution and even culturally, including football culture, it well works! 4wanderer4 wrote:Yes you're right, but I do seem to recall people complaining and thinking both those were grossly underestimated at the time. You're right though my mistake! This only re-inforces how Roar's crowds DID improve with a 'local rival', even in the more 'lean' and/or '2011 flood troubled' times! The only issue was the rival's own poor crowds and even worse administration! The Roar would be ACHING for another local rival again and while Fury would be nice (And if they're re-admitted first, then all good!), an Ipswich/Greater SW area team could be the jackpot with the myriad of factors in it's favour. There's a mini Wanderers-esque feel to it's blueprint that I discovered when looking into the Ipswich football history. Hopefully through the Ipswich Knights, Western Pride etc... the culture and demand for a team/rival out there builds, as the potential is stronger there than it ever was on the GC, I believe? Haha, don't forget Barwon prison! ;) Yeah it probably will end up being called Geelong (if a team ever forms here). I was just trying to think outside the box a little bit to encompass the Bellarine and Surf Coast.

I want to tweet it to the major of Geelong see if he likes it maybe something this from the USA I'm sure you could better that. I'll support you there! Personally I think it would be cool to name the team something like Barwon City FC, so that it encompasses the whole peninsula. Some coastal dwellers aren't keen on being a part of Geelong, whereas others are. Let's meet halfway and name them Barwon.

Ipswich City/Rovers/Rangers please FFA would not allow Western Pride anyway - not geographically specific enough, Matheson originally wanted to call his side Northern Fury, if I remember correctly, but FFA said it needed to be more specific.

Agree with a Brisbane derby. The Roar's attendances are looking really good at the moment, and a derby would help solidify that.
Plus Brisbane doesn't have a whole lot of teams compared to Melbourne (AFL) and Sydney (NRL), so there's room for another out west.
FFA should do what they did with WSW and fund them. Now that they're selling the Wanderers, they can look at starting up another new team in the coming years. If it takes Ipswich a couple more years to find their feet, then that's okay, as it's a long-term plan anyway.
Biggest thing holding back Ipswich will obviously be stadium. Everything else seems ripe for the picking - Local Rival - check Population base - check Reasonable corporate backing to engage - check
I think a big mistake is plonking teams in areas that won't have proper rivals. Perth managed to do it on their own, but even Adelaide had a derby for 20 NSL years and as soon as West Adelaide were gone it seems Adelaide City fell to shit. United do ok, but a fair bit of their success seems to stem from their rivalry with Victory. Before GCU were a basket case, Roar got some good crowds against them in some lean times for them - I recall 23k+ back in 09-10ish. Any new side needs an instant rival to be viable imo. Yeah I like the sound of that. Brisbane is the biggest derby-less city, so it would be good for them to have a rivalry. Huge potential up there. Plus I feel like the Queensland NPL is well structured and organised, so two A-League teams will give the aspiring players some extra ambition.

Funny how they've helped keep alive struggling clubs with a tv deal since their formation. Show a little gratitude bogans :) Fox's TV deal now dwarfs anything Sky TV NZ and Wellington bring to the table. Fox Sports pays for Wellington's core salary cap, the argument about "NZ bring TV money to the table" is now invalid. All FFA/A-League sponsors get penetration into the NZ market courtesy of the involvement of Wellington in the league. Thus, the involvement of New Zealand (via Wellington) means that sponsors get something like 20% more citizens to flash their lovely logos at. I would suggest that big businesses, when negotiating sponsorship deals, take these kinds of things into account. Thus, having a Kiwi side around may have other benefits you haven't taken into account. This; well said. There's an audience of 1.3 million people waiting to expose to parties who wish to give money to Australian football. Sounds awful, doesn't it?

I'm always surprised too Jets don't try and engage as much as I'd have thought with Coffs Harbour-Port Macquarie-Kempsey areas too, feels like they used to but would rather give $2 memberships now...
